Blood Pact: The Warlock wishlist
Between Arenas, V'Ming spends his time as a lock laughing ominously in AV, tanking Olm with his own minions and pondering troll fashion from Zul'Aman. The luckier ones among us would have some or most of our Christmas wishes granted yesterday, especially wishes that can be fulfilled at your friendly neighborhood mall - no, your presents are not made by elves in the North Pole.
Some altruistic individuals might have wished for something more nebulous like "world peace". But perhaps nothing feels more nebulous than wishes for improving the Warlock class; world peace might happen sooner than some Warlock wishes in this thread!
Combing through the current 52 pages of the thread, and leaving out complaints and unrealistic requests that will obviously upset class balance, I've come up with this (hopefully) definitive wishlist for warlocks.
Instant Corruption
We are pretty much unanimous in calling for a trainable instant Corruption. Currently, five points in Improved Corruption is simply mandatory for leveling locks and others who want to include corruption in their spell rotation, making it probably the most common talent among warlocks. Given that some 'essential' Mage spells like Evocation, instant Arcane Explosion and eventually Ice Block, have made the transition from talent to trainable, shouldn't this essential Warlock DoT be given some love too?
Pet scaling
This is another pet topic close to our dark hearts. Many warlocks, particularly our Demonology brethren, are calling for more durability and group utility for our pets. While pets are phenomenal for leveling, they quickly become a liability in raids and PvP for demonologists who rely on their pets more than the other specs. In short, pets are not scaling to the increasingly powerful gear that their masters get at level 70, and thus become squishy relative to the mobs and opponents encountered at that level.
There are also calls for the Infernal and Doomguard to be elevated beyond 'party trick' status, and thankfully Blizzard has indicated that they will see some buffs in the future.
Epic flying mount and Green Fire!
Many of us feel somewhat cheated when warlocks lost their exclusivity in terms of mounts post-BC. We had to conform with the rest of the populace, and be content to ride the generic flying mounts when many of us (myself included) had rolled the class to look cool on our fiery steeds. We're not asking for free or cheaper mounts, but let us quest for our class-specific flying mount like we did at level 60.
Hell, make it a tough lore-laden quest, so that the mount can be a proud badge of our commitment to the warlock cabal! A flying demon dragon-like mount would be nice, or turn us into flying demons! And make these inaccessible to gnome warlocks 'cos they'll simply look ridiculous - haha, just kidding.
Warlocks are also concerned about our class identity as a whole - we look too much like mages, especially when we are casting our fire spells. If 'fel' mobs have Green Fire, why shouldn't we? Even our infernals and imps have Green Fire! Fel or demonic fire should simply be differentiated from elemental fire - it's gotta be Green!
Other calls to make warlocks more like cultists and practitioners of dark magic include making our rituals (Summoning, Souls and Doom) more dramatic, and giving us more reasons to cast Ritual of Doom, which we had to quest for, by the way. Give warlocks more opportunity to do their dark, ominous laugh ...
Soul shards
Ah, the perennial Warlock gripe, from as far back as I can remember. I will not go to the extent of calling the soul shard mechanic 'archaic' or 'annoying', considering that other classes have their own resource management concerns outside of health and mana. However, what most players find problematic is that the game forces them to farm soul shards before any other activity.
It is difficult to replenish soul shards in PvP, and there is virtually no way to regain shards in many raid boss encounters, short of exiting the instance (which is also not an option for instances in lowbie zones, such as Zul'Aman). This means warlocks need to come loaded with soul shards, sacrificing bag space and devoting time beforehand to banal farming.
Many warlocks are calling for an easier, quicker way to get soul shards, and for shards to be stackable (fives maybe?) to alleviate the secondary problem of bag space.
Escape mechanism
Death coil's horror effect, originally introduced in patch 1.8, gave warlocks a much needed escape mechanism other than fear. It gave warlocks a way to create space between themselves and melee classes like rogues and warriors, which were and still are the PvP bane of warlocks everywhere.
There are still concerns in the community that warlocks do not have enough escape options when cornered in a melee situation. This lack becomes more pronounced when warlocks compare themselves to mages. One suggestion for an escape mechanism is a self-banish that renders the Warlock immobile and invulnerable for a short time, effectively removing the lock from combat and harm's way like what Ice Block does for mages. On the flip-side of this argument is that warlocks are innately more durable than other clothies, and as such, they shouldn't need additional escape options.
I frankly do not foresee Blizzard responding to PvP anecdotes of a vocal few, unless it becomes a widespread game-breaking deficiency (like pre-coil warlocks who were essentially free HKs). If we base a class's PvP effectiveness on its representation in the Arenas, warlocks seem to be doing quite well.
Firestone and Demon Armor
Many warlocks would like to see more utility out of some spells gathering dust in their spellbooks. One such offender is Create Firestone. Personally I played with rank 1 of the spell for a bit while leveling and have never touched it since. I doubt many warlocks have rank 5 of this spell!
While the utility of firestones and spellstones were improved somewhat when they were moved from the off-hand to the wand slot, many of us can't justify giving up a wand for a fire damage buff - even for destruction warlocks. Needless to say, the melee component is pretty much useless for a ranged caster class. One suggestion to improve the firestone's utility is to introduce a Scorch-like effect to the Warlock's fire-based nukes.
Fel Armor is so good that it makes Demon Armor a pre-BC relic. Suggestions include adding Resilience and more resistances to the essentially defensive buff, so that warlocks will have a choice again with their single self-buff, regardless of spec.
Other wishes to improve utility drill down to specific talents, such as Malediction and other high-tier talents. The general expectation is that if Blizzards wants us to invest so many points to make a talent available, make that talent useful and less situational at least.
What other wishes do you have for our beloved class? What more nasty goodness will warlocks get come the expansion, to differentiate us from mages and deathknights?

I would love to see seduction more on par with polymorph. Add something to the demo spec tree, or buff the ability and make it trainable. either way.

Over all valid concerns. I agree 100% with the shard issue. I do however feel that needing escape from Rogue/Warriors is less of a Warlock issue and more of a Cloth wearing caster issue.
Stun's are just to OP imo.
Makros Dec 27th 2007 11:19AM
Stuns are OP says Fear? rock paper scissors.
ScorchHellfire Mar 30th 2008 3:05PM
i would agree that stuns are op and the guy who brought up fear as a counter is an imbecile... fear can be broken on damage stuns cannot... fear has diminishing returns (which is also triggered by the sucubus seduce) stuns do not... there are way more ways to break fear than stuns and way more things have stun... not only that but our aoe fear sucks compared to others since warrior and priest aoe fear are instant and ours come with a 1.5 sec cast that makes it so you can almost never get it off while being beat upon
i also agree with the escape mechanic and instant corruption... and as far as warlocks being inately more durable than the other clothies... why would that be the case? i see no reason... i actually see more reason for the other clothies to be more durable seeing as they both have damage shields and we lost our spell damage shield from spellstone when they changed how that works...
as far as the green fire goes i dont really mind the regular fire... besides abyssals dont have the fel fire look... but yeah our pets suck compared to hunters... either make them scale more, let them have 1 more ability or let us be able to upgrade the infernal and doomguard to an abyssal and terror fiend some time so that they wont suck so much...
that and please make tainted blood from the felhunter be cast on the warlock and not the felhunter itself... no one freaking attacks the felhunter first and this would give locks a little more anti melee defense which is what we really need with no damage shield and if you spec destruction (like me) you are especially vulnerable without the abilities the other two trees give you...
oh and give us back the burning foot prints like we had in beta...

I have to go on and say I agree with a lot of this. I'm a 70 lock been so for awhile and it's gotten to the point I don't even use my pet anymore. I did notice that as I got higher in level that my pet was less and less effective. One Shadowbolt and my VW might as well not be taunting. I take more of a beating then any of my pets do plain and simple. The pets need to be upgraded plain and simple. I to hate having to pull out my imp in a party because everyone wants 700 more hp, and then I look at my imp Zeploz and notices he is the exact same since level one. We all know Blizzard has many many different models of demons. Why can't our pets looks improve over time? We've all seen the slightly large and better looking imps Void walkers, even Fel Guards, so why the hell do mine look the same as when I first summoned them? I actually came up with a radical idea that I know blizzard would prolly never use but meh. Why can't Warlocks be a little more like hunters in that our enslave demon is just that.. we Enslave a demon, like a hunter Tames a beast. We could pick and choose our Demons rather then be stuck with the same old one each and every time. The hell with trick pets like the Infernals. Warlocks are suppose to be the master of the demonic world. We should be able to enslave a certain number of demons and teach them a limited number of abilities of our choice like hunters can. long and short of it when it comes to pets Locks get screwed. At the very least the pets we are allowed to summon should not be breaking control just cause of what they are. Like someone pointed out, in the open cinematic of the game you see an undead Lock with an infernal as it's minion, nothing hinting at it's being controlled or that the Lock only has so long with it, you don't see it turn on the lock. Common blizzard, it's time to step up and give the lock a little more fun, variety, versatility, and all out better pets.
Fear is alright I guess.... it would be nice to have another way out, Mages have Ice blockAND various sheeps. Rogues have cloak of shadows ( or whatever ) AND Sap. Hell the other pet class Hunters have Ice Block traps AND Feign death! Why do locks only get fear which in many cases can only make things worse!!!! Ever try to fear in a place like Shattered halls? All you end up doing is aggroing 20 other things!!! And yea... our AoE fear has a 1.5 cast time where you have to pay into it and well into the affliction talent tree to get it to be instant where priests and warriors < who already have things like shield wall and various bubbles get instant AoE fears. Are not Lock suppose to be the masters of fear as well? Why can't we have a fear that locks the mob in place? To scared to move or act? And why do only Priests have a fear ward? Why don;t locks who have 3 diffrent kinds of fear ( Death coil ( which has been nerfed to death ) , Fear and Howl ) have no spells or resistants to fear? People say locks are over powered? I don't think so. Mages are the main DPSers, Hunters get the pets banquet and better pets over all by far. most any class has better ways out of a bad situation then locks do. Yea, locks can be strong in the hands of the right person, but we are far from over powered, as a matter of fact... we need to be boosted in some areas.
Tyler Dec 26th 2007 5:32PM
The problem with improved firestone (besides the fact that firestone is broken anyways) is that its in the demonology tree when really, only destro locks would get full use out of it. Buff and move the imp firestone into the destro tree and you might find locks using it a big more.
Shofixti Feb 28th 2008 8:10PM
Perhaps SpellStone and FireStone could work more like SharpeningStone or WizardOil - something that is applied to the active weapon for an effect. Maybe that would make us too Shamany.
Slayblaze Dec 26th 2007 5:32PM
I'm sure we're going to see a lot of QQ-babies whining that Warlocks are already OP...consider them all pre-ignored! I love this stuff. The shortcomings of the class are so many that I'll just touch on my major wish: DEMONS.
Compared to the only other "Pet-Class" in the the game, Warlocks have got the short end of an already very short stick. The number of pet choices available to Hunters are almost staggering, even though after the normalization there are fewer differences between them, the fact remains: Warlocks don't really have anything to look forward to after level 50 in regards to their pets.
Yes, you get a few more spells for the Felguard (pretty decent ones too) but there is no variety whatsoever...yet there are so many different various types of demons in the game that blizz could easily give 'locks a few more choices from pre-existing models/colors/abilities without even having to invent new one. Like they took the Felguard model from the blasted lands mobs.
My biggest gripe is having to use the Imp in raids because he really *is* the best choice...better than saccing even with DS spec... and the Imp is the very first demon you get. using the same demon since level 4 is just lame.
While everything else V'ming Chew (wow, is that a real name?!) mentioned is absolutely on the money, the biggest improvement that Warlocks need is more Demon variety. Better pet scaling would be great, but how about an Imp that *looks* Improved, I dunno...make him bigger, give him some more flames, with horns sprouting out all over, make him a different color -or like a previous post I made here, a different color for a different "resist" shield: right now the Imp's only shield is Fire...how about a Blue Imp that has a Frost resist Shield buff, or a Green imp with a Nature resist shield buff, etc etc. You use the correct Imp for different encounters = more utility and more choices. I'd also really really like to see "double summons" or "multiple summons" like the Orc Warlocks in LBRS do where they open a portal and demons start spewing forth until you interupt them. Or having 2 imps out like some other mobs can. I fully expect to see this in the upcoming expansion(s) as a level 80 spell for example. Other Warlock mobs in the game can do it, WE should be able to as well!
The upcoming changes the devs hinted at regarding the Doomguard and Infernal would be an excellent start, so hopefully things will get better.
Nuronv Dec 26th 2007 6:49PM
I think many hunters feel the same about warlock pets, the grass is always greener it seems.
Their wasn't much on other side of the portal for Hunters either, 4 new pet types and only two of them (warp stalker & ravenger) due to the others either not having racial abilities or having caster stats.(http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/articles/stats_casters.shtml)
I do agree with all your other statements though :)
Arnold Dec 26th 2007 10:24PM
@#3,
I understand your pain at being forced to use "the same pet since level 4" but I play a feral druid. Stare at my cat/bear behind for 50-60 levels, why don't you...
Otherwise, good article, good comments everybody.
Knucker Dec 26th 2007 11:29PM
I agree with arnold's reply about feral, well all druids. You are griping about looking at the same pet while we are looking at the same thing since lvl 10/20/40/50 considering spec. But don't get me wrong, I also have a newly 70 warlock that I'm starting to get bored with the look. However when you see no improvement in all it gets very frustrating. In other words you can't tell the difference between a lvl 10 who just got bear form and a lvl 70 druid in dire bear with full T6 and BM armor. Ah, i know I'm getting off topic, this is the warlock post, but I want you to remember that warlocks aren't the only people who have to look at the same thing since the low lvls.
P.S. Blizzard threw up the excuse that they are working on new models for the Sunwell, but that isn't a very good one imo.....
Lori Dec 26th 2007 5:47PM
Well my wish list difinetly includes a change in Infernals and Doomguards. Including the deal about having to be in a group to summon the Doomguard.
I also would like to see unique epic ground and flying mounts for ALL classes. Just a quest line to change the appearence of our mounts every ten levels.

Ahhh, I hate "class X has Y which our class needs" comparisons, they are just so stupid. I would happily give up frost nova, frost armour and ice bolt snares for CoExhaustion, let alone fear and deathcoil. Any warlock that can seriously say they need more ways to keep people off them, needs to quit and go play HelloKitty Island Adventure.
Instant cast corruption and quest flying mounts I can agree with. Hell they need to introduce racial flying mounts, I would probably start playing my lock again if I could fly around on a bat.
Eztonic Dec 26th 2007 6:17PM
While I agree to a lot of your ideas, I think the Spellstone is simply unmissable in PVP; to remove all magic effects from yourself is very usefull. Except that it only really is usefull against Shadow Priest, other Locks, and to a lesser extend Mages.
Something should be done about the melee opponents though; pur a warrior, feral druid (to a lesser extend) or a rogue against me and I'm might as well stop fighting. Especially Cloak of Shadows makes it near impossible to kill an almost dead rogue with so much resistance.
Ok, hit me.
Shadow2 Dec 26th 2007 6:20PM
Instant Corruption: Meh, I'm kinda torn on this one. But yeah, having an instant cast coefficient on a spell with cast time by default doesn't make sense.
Pet Scaling: Same problems a lot of hunters have. Unfortunately, there's a fine line here that just randomly buffing pets will probably end up crossing.
Soul Shards: Not sure you can make them stack at this point due to current soul bags. 28x5 = way too many compared to the 28 now. You'd completely devalue soul bag sales.
Escape: Honestly, I don't see a problem here as is. I've watched my warlock partner essentially juggle 2v2 arena while I was dead, and she basically solos the other two by herself using fears.
Rogues and warriors? Congratulations, you've met the bane of most caster classes. Everyone has a weakness, so again, I don't see the problem. Same way that mages are fairly weak against discipline priests.
