I think the combat mechanicals are less vanity pets and more in the class of pets that are Hunter and Warlock pets. Few can remain for very long and have a cooldown, and that doesn't even consider the kamikaze ones (like the exploding sheep) that are single use. I think the author was trying to put forth pets that had no time limits and just serve to keep their master company running happily behind them
