Phat Loot Phriday: Orb of Deception
I find it hard to believe that we've never done this, but a search through the archives leads me to conclude that we haven't, so here you go.
Name: Orb of Deception
Type: Rare Trinket
Damage/Speed: N/A
Abilities:
At any rate, you probably have a better chance just buying it than actually getting it in a drop. Could cost you up to 500 or even 1000g, but given how quickly gold shows up these days, you'll get it faster by just farming gold for it rather than trying to get it to drop for you. Check the AH every day, grab it when you see it pop up, and you're ready for a little bit of deception fun.
Getting rid of it: Sells for 46s 18c to vendors, and disenchants into a Large Brilliant Shard.
Name: Orb of Deception
Type: Rare Trinket
Damage/Speed: N/A
Abilities:
- On use, transforms you into a character of the opposing faction.
- That means you suddenly change your look, from Alliance to Horde or vice versa. Humans to Orcs, Undead to Night Elf, Troll to Dwarf, Tauren to Gnome, and Blood Elf to Draenei (or vice versa).
- Lasts for five minutes, and has unlimited charges on a 30 minutes cooldown.
- It's mostly just a joke, as NPCs will see right through your disguise, and players will still see red text above your head. But it is fun to cause a little commotion when a newbie spots you walking around a big city as the other faction.
- Finally, gender gets a little weird with this, too. Night Elves and undead will change sexes when transformed, and using other shapeshifting buffs, we're told, will make genders change as well. Why is that? Who knows. Probably a bit of coding weirdness that Blizzard isn't interested in fixing.

Your best bet is to farm in Dire Maul, I believe.

Drops from two different rare elite mobs there.

"Night Elves and undead will change sexes when transformed.."
I've had the orb of deception for at least a year and a half now.... and my Nightelf does not change genders when used. Never has.

Great item, always worth chilling for a while outside the arena for a shot at it.

Brisco County FTW. Kinda makes me want to roll a Bly.

I just bought one from a guildie for 250g. It's a waste of money, yes, but I've always wanted one.
Cool part: It turns me into a dorf!
Not cool part: The gear changes to something that's totally hideous. Not only that, but I was hoping that I'd get to see what a dorf looks like in shaman gear. :(

I had nightmares camping for this in the Dire Maul arena. Soloable as a Tankadin, but it takes a few minutes to kill the boss. The problem is when ANY opposing faction player shows up, they can easily kill you, then continue the kill from however you far you got it down. So bring a friend or 2, even at 70. I may've killed the 3 arena spawns 10 times and never got the Orb, though I got lots of blue level 55-59 gear that's worthless with BC. They spawn something like every 8 hours. It's a waiting game if one isn't there, it could spawn in 5 minutes, or in 7 hours 59 minutes. Never got it myself, but for some, it'd be worth it.

This is our 'coming of level' gift in our guild. All of our members are given one on their mains, usually on their birthday. It's silly, yes, but when one of us got to the walk through Stormwind with Windsor part of the Onyxia quest, we all transformed into horde and walked most of the way to the keep that way, shouting "For the horde!" and using their charges. It made quite a sight. We've also had guild group pictures using them in instances.

I find the Area 52 Dimensional Area Ripper to be much more fun if you're lucky enough to get the race debuff. Especially If you're a warrior, switching stances lets you change race.
Like this one time I had the Dimensional Ripper size debuff, logged out, came back on and saw I still had the debuff, used the ripper again and got debuffed into a tauren. Add a winterfall firewater and a shamans heroism. And you've got yourself a huge tauren:

Hey just curious, what addons are you using to make your UI look like that, looks pretty slick imo.

Ehh, I made it a while ago, http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/10064/ :]

I got a locked chest from a random mob outside of Auchindon while farming for Aldor rep. I asked my fiancee to open it on her Rogue expecting junk and this was inside. I sold it for about 500g on the AH.
Simon Dec 29th 2007 3:26AM
A friend of mine borrowed 400g from me to buy this Orb in the AH for a whooping 600g. I always wanted to have this Orb too, but 600g is way too much in my opinion, but that's just the start of it. Imidiately after he bought it , we went to Silithus to farm for his Cenarion Rep and guess what, just about 15 minutes after he spend a heep of money to buy the Orb, it dropped. I got it, and now we both tell stupid Drenai jokes from time to time.
Anyway, while it's a nice gimick I don't think it's worth spending money on, and as already stated, the change in gear is realy stupid. If you could keep the gear you're actualy wearing and just change the racial model it would be much, much cooler.

Got it from a random ogre in Deadwind Pass during my first levels ever in WoW. I was totally ripped off when I sold it on Trade channel for 80g. Well, what can you expect from a mega noob who don't know better :) Now I know though....
RogueJedi86 Dec 29th 2007 11:48AM
But those Ogres in Deadwind Pass are around level 55-60 in level. How did you get a drop off killing them in your first levels of WoW? Did you buy an account with a level 60 character already on it when you started WoW? For shame!
Lertes Dec 29th 2007 11:57AM
Hmmm, that makes sence...I ment "during my first moths in WoW" :) Although it feels as it was my first shivering levels....long time ago...
Taylor Dec 29th 2007 5:58AM
Used to sell for 25-40g pre-Burning Crusade. Really not as fun as it looks and breaks off when you do stuff (see: fight.)
sZimm Dec 29th 2007 7:05AM
thx for reminding me about brisco county, a show i used to watch as a kid... had completely forgotten about it
Vespa Dec 29th 2007 7:31AM
Firstly, it isn't a world drop, it's a drop from inside Dire Maul (which is why there used to be so many in the ah, since alot of people used to farm DM for gold back in the pre-tbc days).
And secondly if you are undead and use it, it doesn't change your gender - i should know, my main is an undead mage (female) and i've had this item for over a year or so now - i mainly use it to entertain my guildies when we are on a timeout/break :)
