The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Weapons

The Care and Feeding of Warriors, in the spirit of Christmas, decides this week to talk about all the wonderful toys available to the warrior class. Matthew Rossi misses his Sulfuras. Well, he doesn't miss it, exactly, he still has it, he just doesn't get to use it much anymore.
Warriors are the class who can bash, hack, slice, or even punch things. Rogues? They can't hack. Shaman's can't slice, hunters can't bash. Paladins can't use sticks for some reason. I've never gotten that one. There's a perfectly good stick right in front of you and you can't hit things with it? It's a stick! It's easier to use than a sword! But no weapon escapes the warrior and his or her relentless quest to find new things to bash, hack, slice or even punch with. The weapon can really define the warrior... to this day, the legacy of all those Arcanite Reapers can be felt in how people view the warrior class. Sure, paladins and hunters and shamans used them. But it doesn't matter. It's the fact that for many it was the signature warrior weapon, the choice for PvP, that to this day exerts a mystique over the way people talk about warriors. Warriors who have never seen a Reaper know what the weapon was and why it was so popular.
When the Eye of Sulfuras dropped for my old guild and I got it, I was beyond excited. When I crept into BRD with a paladin and my wife on her hunter, loaded down with the mats to make the Sulfuron Hammer, I literally was as jazzed as I had ever been as a player. My guild only ever saw the eye drop twice, and we only had two Thunderfury creations in the time before The Burning Crusade - even as we were rolling into Naxx, these were special moments that helped cement a love for the game. I'm sure every warrior who tanked before the expansion remembers when he or she got Quel'Serrar. Now, post-expansion, there are of course new weapons that fill these roles, and as you level you'll gain and abandon any number of weapons, some for tanking, some for DPS, some just because they're cool. Admit it, you took Ravager because it looked cool.
This week, we'll look at weapons from Deadmines to Black Temple. Some will be the best for their role for the level, others will be weapons that have managed to earn a place of prominence or in history, and some will just be cool or different. Because a warrior without a weapon is like a mage without magic.
Anyone who's run the Deadmines remembers hearing "You landlubbers are tougher than I thought! I'll have to improvise!" Even coming back literally years later to help a friend run it, my level 70 warrior gets to stand their stunned for a couple of seconds while Mr. Smite goes and switches weapons. And he drops some of the nicest weapons possible for his level, especially now that the green drops have been buffed into blues. But the one I was always looking for was Smite's Mighty Hammer, which was awesome even before the recent patch. Now, I've played a lot of warriors, and quite a few alts of other classes have run Deadmines as well.
I've never seen that hammer drop.
I know that it does... my wife's warrior alt had one. So I got to watch her little gnome run around whacking things with it. The hammer actually seemed to mock me. Sure, I was level 60, I had a better two hander by then, that's not the point. One of the greatest curses of random loot is that you outlevel drops you desperately wanted. The Barbarous Blade? Never got it. Ashkandi? Wouldn't have been fair after I got Sulf. Smite's was the first time I had that experience, and man, it never gets more fun to stare at a weapon you know you farmed fifteen, thirty, fifty or more times for and never got.
There are, of course, a plethora of weapons out there. Yeah, I just like using the word plethora, get over it, it's a fun word. There are weapons for PvP and weapons for DPS and weapons for tanking and weapons we're not supposed to be looking at, weapons with grody int on them or some other caster stat. Each weapon has stats more suitable to its intended role: a tanking weapon like the Brutalizer will be geared for that role, as opposed to a weapon intended to be used by a DPSer like the Syphon of the Nathrezim. Weapon speed, weapon procs or stats are tuned differently for weapons used in different roles. As you level you should work to recognize this so that you know when it is important that you take a weapon vs. when it is a bad idea. A main tank doesn't need a 2.6 speed proc weapon with no stats over a rogue in most cases. Likewise, it's important to know what weapons work best for a warrior: the way we dual wield is not the way a shaman dual wields. You can check out a detailed overview of Warrior dual wield DPS here, I personally like a fast MH/Slow OH or a slow/slow combo for dual wielding, but your tastes and ability rotation may dictate otherwise.
In short, know what you're looking for in a weapon. Nothing gets a warrior a reputation as greedy as rolling on or spending DKP on weapons that would benefit someone else more. Prot warriors shouldn't bid on the big 2h weapons over warriors who will use them in raids, as an example. DPS warriors shouldn't be going for the Mallet of the Tides before tanks. And this is etiquette you can start working on early, too: you don't want Ripsaw for tanking. In the same instance (albeit harder to get) Sang'Thraze is a far superior tanking weapon, with the parry on it. As always, the best advice is that you really look at the weapon and decide whether or not it's an actual upgrade: pass on sidegrades unless no one else wants.
Since I said we'd look at cool weapons from Deadmines to Black Temple, and while we've technically done that I can't imagine anyone being satisfied with what we have listen, I'll try and hit a smattering of weapons to cover the levels. Remember, there are always going to be weapons I have forgotten about: this is just to give you some eye candy, basically. Feel free to link a favorite like, say, the Butcher or Vibroaxe or the Might of Menethil in the comments, let's go nuts.
The Crescent of Forlorn Spirits - a recently upgrade quest reward from a fun, lore heavy questline in Duskwood. I've always vendored it before, but now that it's been buffed it's actually a really nice weapon for the level.
Bashguuder - You won't see this much anymore, as it was a rare drop off of a rare spawn in LBRS, but I had it as a tanking weapon for a while and it was pretty nice.
Gressil, Dawn of Ruin - This Naxxramas drop is only surpassed once you start getting drops from Heroic 70 instances or Karazhan. If you were lucky enough to get one, you used it all the way to 70 and only replaced it once raiding got serious. Congratulations if that was the case. That's a lot of use to get out of one weapon.
Warmonger - It just looks cool. Technically, one could farm Zul'Farrak for Sul'thraze if you wanted an epic with that look, but it's a lot easier to just pick one up at the AH. I still have the first one I ever had, back when level 47 was new to me and this was a gift from a guildmate who died not too long ago. I doubt I'll ever vendor it.
Claw of Celebras - Fist weapons are awesome. My NE warrior (who was an enchanter) dual-wielded this and the Vilerend Slicer forever, keeping them viable with two +15 agi enchants for when he was grinding.
The Sun-Eater - I hate this sword because it's fast becoming one of those 'it won't drop' swords. I'll have a King's Defender before I get this. And yet, it is so beautiful.
Next week, who knows? I'm still recovering from my Christmas hangover and we're heading into New Years, so next week I may barely be coherent.

The MT in my guild, which is in BT/Hyjal (only have Archimonde and Illidan left to kill) insists that despite the threat nerf to the Thunderfury, it's still a better tanking weapon than "anything except [The Unbreakable Will] (Anetheron in Hyjal)."
Despite the fact he has TUW, he still uses his Thunderfury.

your warrior would be wrong. from king's defender onwards TF's proc doesn't make up for its slower speed and much lower top end damage which makes for much weaker devastates.

@Mayo
Better than [The Stoppable Force]?
You should double check your facts...

A nicely written article. I always love these articles since I play a mage, they give me insight into other classes in the game. Of course, you probably don't want to know that I have both a Suneater and a King's Defender on my mage since no one needed them and we have too many void crystals in the bank. :)

What no corpse maker? is used that weapon for a long time.

Ah this topic brings back so many memories ... of pain and suffering at not getting some weapons, but of glory and joy after seeing one drop and hitting that Need button so fast that your computer almost broke down!
Between Deadmines and Black Temple eh? Let me see ... so I'm only allowed 3 URLs, so you'll probably have to do keyword searches for most of these
For 2 Handers (we've already seen Smite's Mighty Hammer):
Arced War Axe: this beauty has seen a recent upgrade, and is a fine addition to the warrior's arsenal - Shadowfang Keep
Reef Axe: Beware, Hunters will definitely be rolling against on this! 2H-wielding warriors will certainly appreciate the stamina on this axe, as well as the attack power (equivalent to 10 Str) - Blackfathom Deeps.
Corpsemaker: This fine executioner is touted as THE twink 2Hander for 20-29. And who could argue? It's a beauty that drops in one of the lesser-traveled dungeons - Razorfen Kraul.
Thermaplugg's Left Arm: Though this one is probably a moot point for warriors unless you manage to happen upon this amazing 2hander right at level 28, this one takes the cake for being the most powerful pre-30 2 hander. Too bad it's in the instance I despise the most - Gnomeragan.
Whirlwind Warhammer: Dear sweet Whirlwind Weapon! The one item that all warriors aspire to in their 30-40's. If you're able, do yourself a favor, find some guildies, and get this butt-kicker so you can hewer through the next 10 levels with ease. You won't be replacing it for a while. And I won't have to describe anymore weapons! Quest Reward.
X'caliboar: If you're unlucky enough not to get a Whirlwind Weapon, there's still hope! This humorously named 2h sword comes from a rare-spawn in RFD, which has been toned down recently for mid-to-high 30's. It's a very pleasing alternative to our quest reward weapon - Razorfen Downs.
Morgraine's Might: I liked using this before the patch, but now?! This mace is so sexy that I almost rolled a new warrior to get it. No, there are harder-hitting alternatives. But please! Look how awesome this mace is - how can you NOT want to use it? Scarlet Monestary Cathredal
Ravager: Honestly, I think this weapon isn't very hot. But I'm listing it because I know every warrior who's been to the SM Armory has watched Herod spin and around with his axe and cried on the inside because we can't do that with our whirlwind. So get this axe, spin around til your heart's content, and then vendor it happily knowing that you've "been there, done that". Scarlet Monestary Armory.
Grimlok's Charge: The patch made this more appealing to hunters, with the Str being changed to AP, but it's still a very nice polearm, which I always loved on my warrior for some strange reason. Very balanced offensive stats and solid DPS that will take you a few levels to replace. And the instance has been recently toned down for being absurdly hard for its intended level range- Uldaman.
Rockpounder: I remember fighting mighty Archaedas before the patch at level 47, and crying when I found that his was all he dropped. I personally think that he's the first "big boss" - you really feel like you're taking on something huge when you fight Archaedas, and now that he's level 40 boss, instead of 47, you can actually defeat him at the level you're supposed to be! Uldaman
Princess Theradras' Scepter: The ultimate 2 Hander for the 40-49 range, this one is known for its slow swing time, high dps, and decent swing proc. Not much to say here about the hammer. Just don't stay to close to Princess when she power farts - they're nasty. Maraudon
I'll have to save 1 handers for other people. I want to see if I'm going to get any formatting errors like last time. Man that sucked.

Still have my Grom'tor's Charge in the bank:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=31071
Great tanking weapon in the early endgame: fast weapons mean more sunders in less time. Easily within reach of most any warrior; requires a fairly long quest chain in Shadowmoon Valley, but only the final mission requires a team. Unfortunately, that quest line includes the single most odiously annoying quest in the entire game: if the word "tuber" doesn't make you cringe, you haven't done it yet.
Other weapons I remember well include the Sword of Serenity:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=6829
which I got at level 38, and kept for at least ten levels: it's the Alliance quest reward for the main Scarlet Monastery quest.
Psychosis Dec 28th 2007 5:28PM
Hellreaver (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24044), that is an amazing weapon from Hellfire ramaparts, untill you get hatebringer (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=24461) from underbog
unforrtunately i had the "never gonna drop" syndrome on hatebringer and used it untill the ring of blood reward honed voidaxe (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25762)

I've played a warrior since launch and have a thing for keeping "noteworthy gear" in the bank, particularly weapons. I have a bag slot that's pretty much a museum.
So what's in there? My sword of omen and whirlwind sword are in there, for one. Omen was an awesome quest reward and good for how long? Getting your whirlwind at 30 is pretty much a requirement for the class. It still has a counterweight on it because I was levelling blacksmithing.
Then there's my bloodrazor- my first epic. It's got uh... demonslaying on it because "ZOMG IT GLOWS." It sits next to my boots of avoidance that I bought off a gold farmer for 30g (talked him down from 300). I was pretty impressive 2 months or so after the game came out. Then there's my Quel'Serrar. It sits next to widow's remorse.
Aside from my Hand of Rag, probably my favorite weapons in the collection are my dual Hakkari blades for sheer sentimental value. I raided as fury with the blades in Naxx and was typically 2nd or 3rd dps with them because of the +swords on them. I outdps'd rogues with dual 60 dps naxx weapons with those sub 50 dps'ers. Even after I got two 60s, myself, I went back to the old Edgemasters +Hakkari combo. There was something kind of awesome about being a warrior and showing up to a raid with less than 4,000 hitpoints and outdpsing rogues and mages with tier 2.5/3 with a pair of sub-50 gloves you picked up from the auction house and two weapons from ZG.
Finally, of course there's Hand of Ragnaros. Blizzard's first legendary that allowed me to do 15% of the total damage done in BWL's suppression chambers because of rage vs. mana mechanics. Move over, mages, I can aoe for HOURS. =)

Ah, I so miss the Hellreaver. 'Tis was my first upgrade in BC from the almighty Arcanite Reaper, which I got donated to me after a years break from WoW, by some friends... Anyways, Hellreaver is by far the coolest looking weapon in the game IMHO. And fashion-sense is important to a real warrior :)

"The Care And Feeding Of Warriors" and "The Light And How To Swing It" as well as the late mage column are just three of the columns written by players who really know their class. As a longtime reader, I am happy that these columns have never compromised their integrity and have never insulted their audience by giving us topics like "How To Level This Class From 1 To 5" or more whining about class complaints that merely copies posts from the main forum.
"Totem Talk" on the other hand... oh my God! That's a really bad column. It speaks of things that dedicated Shaman players already know by level 20! C'mon WowInsider... get a player who knows the shaman class to write that forum. Get a writer who can share something shamans can actually learn from!
Matthew Rossi Dec 28th 2007 11:56PM
You ARE aware that I write both this column and Totem Talk, yes? So thanks and I'm sorry you hate my work, I guess.
Angus Dec 29th 2007 11:44AM
Matthew does a good job with Totem Talk.
He's willing to learn and obviously has informing Shaman as a priority. He's actually done similar with this column as well, just in a different format. I'd say this column is superior, but both are very good.
Turall Dec 29th 2007 5:13AM
Ice. Barbed. Spear.
Zechleton Dec 29th 2007 2:03PM
Sorry, but nothing beats the Untamed Blade i used to have. I'm not really one for keeping weapons after they go out of date but that was so sexy - way better than the tacky green version in SSC. The only other weapon i REALLY wanted and eventually got was Unstoppable Force. Pretty much a pre-BC version of my Deep Thunder.
I also used to love my Claw of the Black Drake until they made a crappy blue version of it so readily available in SH. Oh well.
Brian Arnold Dec 31st 2007 10:27AM
I'd really like to know what people recommend for tanking that I can acquire to start tanking heroics or OTing in Kara. Our guild doesn't do a lot of raiding, but we're dabbling a bit here and there, and I'd really like to be as equipped as I can.
I'm working on getting Grom'tor's Charge, as I think I'd read somewhere that it was the best pre-raid tanking weapon in the game right now, but I have no idea how valid that statement is.
Peter Jan 3rd 2008 7:38AM
@Brian - Both the Crystalline Kopesh and Grom'tor's Charge are good pre Kara raid weapons that are easily attainable through quest. Also available to you, if you're a blacksmith are The Planar Edge, Drakefist Hammer and Fireguard all of the weapons can serve you well until you are able to secure a better drop. I was able to level my blacksmithing and Mining in 2.5 weeks to be high enough to craft Drakefist, the beauty of this is i was also able to create Thunder for those days when i respec and do BG's and Arena.
