A world full of Death Knights
This little informal survey by Ralloszek over on the WotLK forums raises a pretty good question: is anyone not planning on making a Death Knight when the next expansion hits? We're going to end up with a world full of pale people in black armor wielding gigantic frostblades-- maybe Blizzard should call it "World full of Lich Kings."It's pretty easy to see that not everyone will switch their main (I don't ever foresee leaving my main, although I do plan to level a Death Knight as an alt), but even if people just roll them to check it out, it reminds me a lot of the Star Wars Galaxies "new game enhancements" where they made Jedi a playable class. If you can roll a Jedi as a class, why would you roll anything else?
Of course, we could give Blizzard the benefit of the doubt here-- they haven't revealed much at all about the game's first Hero Class, so maybe it'll be so hard to get one that they really will be very rare, or they'll only be allowed in certain areas (so you won't see a pack of Death Knights swarming around the mailbox in Stormwind). We already know that they'll start at a higher level, so the good news is that you won't see Elwynn Forest flooded with a bunch of level 1 Death Knights. But as for other ways to keep what is supposed to be a special class special, we'll have to see what Blizzard comes up with.

I think there are many issues other than pure population that Blizzard is dealing with right now. One of which is the economic impact of Death Knights. What is going to stop a flood of new high level death knights from starting on a relatively new/low population server and quickly becoming the super farmers of that realm? One group will surely join their old character's realm, but another will pioneer another realm due to the independence that beginning at a higher level will give them.

Having played a paladin with all that comes with it for two years. I'm not touching another "hybrid" class ever again.
The popularity and numbers of the Death Knights that reach level 80 will be in direct relation to just how over-powered Blizzard will make them.
Right now I can't seem to step down in a battleground without seeing a few warlocks or hunters (the current flavors of the months)
I'll test it of course, try out the tricks mainly to learn how they kill me. But I'm sticking to pure classes.

I think that since the death knights start at a higher level, they will become the most favorable bank character.
This way you won't have to level them up at all(hopefully) to powerlevel a profession to help your other characters.
If they start at a fairly high level, i'd surely consider levling a few of them just past 60 to get the advantage of many professions.
That is if you are even allowed to have more than one death knight per account :O

I already have 3 70s why would I want another? I guess it would be fun to put around on a DK, but a DK won't be all powerful.
In fact I am going to hang out in the 50s zone where the DK is going to start. Then gank gank and gank with my geared out Horde Rogue.

Rumor has it that players who complete BT will be allowed to have a death Knight. I heard this during a vent discussion with an Aussie who said he saw it on some german WOW board. That would limit the DK flooding the game.

An unlikely rumor.
Things will surely change, but I'm confident blizz will stick with their intended formula: Buy the expansion, hit 80, complete some series of steps to unlock the DK class.

"steps"
I would think they would do a whole quest chain.
