Fired for a screenshot
Reader Marc sent us this story of why he got fired-- just by reading it you can tell that there were probably other things going on the workplace, and the good news is that he sounds like he's better off looking for another job, but basically there was a misunderstanding at work, and as a result he was sent home for a half day. And to show his (sarcastic) thanks, he emailed back the screenshot above of his Tauren hanging around a node in AB, complete with MS Paint-ed gratitude to his co-workers and boss.
Of course, as you might expect, the next time he showed up at work, they asked him to pack his things and go (apparently, even though one of his managers was impressed with his HP, they considered the screenshot sending the last nail in the coffin).
We can't exactly advise anyone to quit their job to play WoW, but in this case, Marc sounds like he was on his way out the door anyway. Here's hoping you land on your feet and find a job where they appreciate you, bud.

Horde players move up the ladder very fast.

He's Horde... of course they should fire his a$$!
Dachande Jan 1st 2008 6:24PM
So, you're saying anyone who plays Horde should never have a job? Are you actually *saying* that good ol' Bill Shatner should never find work as an actor again for being the greatest Shaman the world has ever known?
*sobs*

Pure and simple, a young idiot.
Wow, it's common courtesy that individual pay of each employee is not discussed with each other and this can and does create a lot of unrest in the workplace. The young tauren was probably not ratted out by a coworker in a review after his--a coworker probably wanted to know why they didn't get the same raise for producing work that better met deadlines. When asked by the review team "How exactly do you know 's pay scale?" s/he likely replied "He just told the entire room after his review."
Sorry, the whole thing is ridiculous, and it is rude to send the screen shot back to the folks listed. Hope it was worth not only his job, but now a company he cannot use as a reference.
He wasn't fired for a screen shot, he was fired for insubordinate attitude--and because he did so much of this publically he will not be laughing at the unemployment office. He will try to prove he was wrongfully dismissed, his employer will produce hard evidence of his behavior and the unemployent office will say "take a hike, get a job, L2work nub."

Reading his account of his firing, he basically says they want me to do things their way, but I think I am better than that so I wont do it their way. And he gets fired. Shocker.

I pray that unemployment throws him out the door, but the burden of proof is on the company and most companies just don't have the time to dick around with a former employee. Unemployment paperwork goes on for -months-.

Meh, sounds like he worked for jerks regardless. Doesn't excuse his attitude (That being a bit o' a jerk himself), but I admit that gave me a warm fuzzy feeling inside that was eclipsed by the dread feeling that I'm back to work tommorow.

He might be an idiot for sending his manager the screenshot. He is not an indiot for knowing what his work is worth (raise in question) and insisting that he get paid for work instead of working without pay (that six month absence).
Common courtesy does not equal insubordination. He clearly said that there was no official policy on pay discussion nor did he sign anything to that effect. If New York has a reasonable unemployment office, he will get paid for being fired for no acceptable reason. His ex-company should have a policy of non-discussion at the minimum if they want to prevent this sort of thing. At the very least, they would have something to stand on when the unemployment office contacts them.

Have you ever had a job? You don't discuss your pay with your coworkers, official policy or no. You don't do it. You just don't. If you don't know that, get ready to join this kid on the unemployment queue.
As someone remarked on this idiot's blog entry, it is highly unlikely this is the first job he'll be fired from. I just can't wait until his future potential employers google his name...

Ahoni nailed it. This guy apparently had attitude going way back. Regarding the 6 month break, He doesn't mention whether he was paid salary or hourly. If salary, then you don't get paid for extra work, period. Welcome to the real world.
He obviously was aware of the difference between his performance and their expectations, most likely was giving attitude during the review, walks out and tries to stir the pot with his co-workers, gets sent home because of his disruptive actions, and sends a basic "$*@& You" back to them. Clearly an attitude problem all around.
If unemployment has a clue at all, he will be denied. If you want to make more and be a "craftsman" work for yourself, or someone that is looking for that. These people obviously aren't in the prima-donna market.

So you agree that management should be able to manipulate and control employee's via stopping them communicating about their remuneration?
Geez, are you a pointy haired boss yourself? Because you sure sound like one.
Manager: "employee1 you are getting the best raise in the workgroup, don't tell anyone"
*Employee1 leaves Employee2 enters
Manager: "employee2 you are getting the best raise in the workgroup, don't tell anyone"
etc
I'm glad I live in a country where employers can't get away with that kind of bs.
Aldrel Jan 1st 2008 8:10PM
Once you start working in the real world, you'll understand that you don't talk about salary with co-workers. I don't care who you are, you don't do it. It's none of your business what they make and it's none of theirs what you make. Period.
You'll understand that when you get a real job.
theRaptor Jan 1st 2008 11:12PM
I have a real job, I just live in a decent country.
Lios Jan 2nd 2008 8:25AM
Hmm, i have a real job, for 7 years now (and 12 years total work experience) and we talk about our paycheck. Why on earth wouldn't you? I want to know what my co-worker, who does the exact same as me, earns so i know if i need to ask for more or should be happy with what i got. And so does he. Keeping it a secret is only in the benefit of the boss, who can then easily rip you off ('be glad you got 2000, it's a lot', while your co-worker get 3000 because he bargained better).

Pffffft... I could send a screenshot like that from WORK!
Yarrrrrrrrrrrr!
Delcoro Jan 1st 2008 7:16PM
@4:
"l2work" is also the funniest comment of the year (all 18 hours of it). Kudos. You win the internet for today.
Ngnsewa Jan 2nd 2008 3:42AM
I have worked for some pretty dodgy people, so I know what it is like.
Seems to me this guy misinterpreted the entire situation. The pay and raise information from his review should be kept between him + managers. Also the '1/2 day off' sounds like like they were Punishing him not Rewarding. Thus; what he believed to be a joke turns into an insult.
(Hot damn! Web Devs really get paid $12.50 an hour? Even with the conversion to AUS I was getting more working at a supermarket O_o)
Aldrel Jan 1st 2008 7:29PM
His blog was so well designed.... I don't know what they're going to do without him.
