New servers spotted on Realm Status? Think again!
After receiving reports of new US realms, we feel it is our civic duty to inform you of the truth behind these mystery realms. Fairly regularly people see new servers on a realm status report. A name they have not heard, a realm they have not seen. And they announce, breathlessly, that there is a new server. The fact that no one can create a character on the "new server" does not appear relevant. The urge to see a new server is far too great to overcome a simple fact: Blizzard announces new servers. Forum posters do not. And these new servers, for the past year, have never actually become live servers on which we can play. They're testing, configuring, event servers, who knows? Blizzard won't say, that I've seen. But they're not Live and not intended for Live, and in a year they've never gone Live. There's no sense in getting our hopes up for something like that. Blizzard has said there will be no new servers until further notice. A friend on the forum who posts a link to Realm Status showing a previously unseen server is not a Blizzard announcement. This concludes our public service announcement for the day.

We can speculate for ages on what might be this or that, but it comes down to really, one thing: Has Blizzard announced it?
I'm not saying there'll never be new servers, nor that the new servers people are seeing aren't going to be. Just look at the trends. For a year, this has happened regularly and caused the same discussion with the same lack of actual new servers.
They have said what they'll do with new servers. They have said how we will know when they come. Given clearly stated guidelines of what to expect, looking for other clues is interesting, fun, and, thus far, disappointing.

You need to update your post title, it's very misleading and doesn't exactly go with the body of the post. Your title implies there are new servers showing up (giving hope) and then you completely discredit them.
How about something more like: "New servers spotted on Realm Status!? Not exactly..."

Yeah, this is a serious risk of your appeal to the highly desirable "only reads titles" demographic.

An excellent suggestion, thank you. Done, and done.

I don't expect to see new servers until Wrath hits. Last time we saw new servers was when BC hit, so it's an educated guess.
When was the last time there were free US realm transfers? (population balancing kind)
Brian Karasek Jan 3rd 2008 1:31PM
Even this is tricky, Hank, because a year ago we didn't have the glut of low population servers that we do now. TBC had a real demand for new servers. Wrath, if trends indicate, will not.
I'd like to see them merge low population servers, but I don't see them adding any new anytime soon. As I often say, if you've got ten five-gallon buckets and you need to store 35 gallons of water, you don't need any more buckets.

there have been various free transfers for a handful of realms for the past month and a half actually.
Not very successful unfortunately since my realm (one of the ones on the list) offloaded enough player to un-queue, but most of them found out their free server was utter crap and came back.
NO NEW SERVERS is my mantra.
Blizzard needs to MERGE underpopulated servers before they do anything at all. Then, once every server in the game is on med/high pop, yes we could get a new 3-4 servers.

"Caelestrasz is a low population oceanic server. Orginally opened on the 20th of December 2007 for transfers only, from Nagrand, Dath'Remar and Aman'Thul. It was the 5th official PvE server for the oceanic community."
