Phat Loot Phriday: Dory's Embrace

Cloak time! This fairly new cloak sits in a weird place in the endgame ecosystem-- it's a PvP cloak in a PvE world.
Name: Dory's Embrace
Type: Epic Cloak
Armor: 114
Abilities:
Gears G'eras in Shattrath, and turn in a whopping 60 Heroic Badges. Badges, as you probably already know, are available from Heroic instances, as well as from raid bosses in Karazhan and Zul'Aman. So this is a cloak that you can only get from doing PvE.
If you jumped down to this section from the section above, you can go back now.
This cloak was added in with the patch 2.3 gear, so if you haven't seen it there before, that's why. The good news is that even though 60 Badges is a lot, you can supposedly pick up 22 Badges in a full Karazhan run. So just run it three times and you're all set.
Getting Rid of It: This cloak is disenchantable, and like all level 70 epic items, DEs into a Void Crystal. Sells back to a vendor for 60 Heroic badges. No, I'm just kidding, but wouldn't that be nice? Vendors won't buy it back at all-- apparently they have no need for your ratty old Epic gear.
Name: Dory's Embrace
Type: Epic Cloak
Armor: 114
Abilities:
- +34 Stamina
- Improves critical strike rating and resilience by 20, attack power by 46, and your attacks ignore 112 of your opponents' armor
- So it's a Rogue PvP cloak. But wait-- this cloak actually comes from, well, go read the "How to Get It" part below. Go ahead. I'll wait.
- Isn't that a little weird? To get one of the best PvP cloaks for rogues in the game, you have to do PvE. Blizzard doesn't think it's that weird-- they say that originally, they were keeping PvP gear only for PvPers and PvE gear only for those raiders. But later on, they decided that was a bad idea, and now we've got cloaks like this. Still, it's a pretty awesome (and nice looking) cloak.
- And your guess is as good as ours who "Dory" is. I thought it was that fish from Finding Nemo, and it turns out that it's actually a type of fish, but considering the flavor text is "approximately priceless," that doesn't seem right.

PvP gear from a PvE drop ... that's what I though when I picked up the Firemaul of Destruction: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27524 in Shattered Halls a couple weeks ago. Stats are alright, but why do I need resilience on something that I'll use for grinding?

This cloak is named for Kalgan's RL GF, hence the flavor text:
"Approximately priceless."
As in, her embrace is priceless to him.

It's actually a PvP Hunter cloak as well.

This dropped for me yesterday in Shatt, it looks pretty cool too. It's dark and looks longer than your average cloak or cape.

Modded up for hilarity

Er?? This cape doesn't drop, you have to purchase it with 60 badges.... pfft, this cape dropped for me...
sigh.

A Dory is a small fishing boat.

Still no use of the fancy new wowhead links y'all got recently? This is the perfect feature to use it in.
cagey Jan 7th 2008 9:56AM
Seconded. There are at least four links in this article and none of them go detailed information about the item itself? Howzabout the "Name" category be turned into a link.

Why is it a rogue cloak?
Its a melee DPS cloak. Enhancement shamans, dps warriors, maybe even feral druids and hunters. Not sure how armour pen works for ranged, Its amongst the best PvE cloaks out there, not just for PvP although its even better for PvP than PvE.

I dunno, about half of the classes you mentioned (enh shammies, DPS warriors) would rather have Blood Knight over this.

Armour reduction is gold for Enhance Shamans don't forget - it's the only stat that becomes more valuable the more of it you get (up to the cap). This is worth around 109 Enhancement Points, Blood Knight is around 89, according to the Tier 4 stat weights on http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t13297-enhance_shaman_collected_works_theorycraft_vol_i/

I have this on my hunter, and she's a real beaut. Adds .91% to my crit (not including the .30 from the 12 agi 'chant) alongside 46 AP. It's a monster of a cloak for pvp, with the added stamina and bit more crit than the Blood Knight. At one point I had the Arm Pen vs AP figured for my hunter, so I knew if BK was better for PvE. I don't remember...
I would highly recommend this cloak for Enhance Shamans. You lose 2 AP but gain a bundle of crit and some Arm Pen to boot. Certainly not a rogue-only item, but I'm not sure that's what the author meant to imply.
BenMS Jan 5th 2008 4:01AM
Well said Jeff. My Enhance Shaman doesn't have this yet, needing the upgrades to trinket and totem first. He does, however, have the same shoulders as the rogue in the pic. Enhance Shamans need pretty much the same stats that rogues do, with the exception of needing strength instead of +hit. Check him out - and ignore my boots, please. Drops have been... less than pleasant. Hopefully I'll get something off Nightbane tonight.

Got the boots off Aran - better than my AH greens. Significantly :)

The healing version of this cloak (don't remember the name) is also among the best "casual" cloaks there is. Even though it has resilience.

This cloak is real easy to get even if you're mainly a PvP'er.... just run Kara for a couple of weeks and a heroic or whatever, and bingo.
Mats Jan 5th 2008 9:43AM
You have to do PvE to get a PvP item? How wierd, or is it? I had to do Arena for a few weeks to get my PvE spelldamage dagger, and no one thought that was weird. After all, it was the best PvE dagger I could get untill last boss in Mt.Hyjal, so when the guild has just started working on SSC, it is worth the arena grind.

"Isn't that a little weird? To get one of the best PvP cloaks for rogues in the game, you have to do PvE."
doesn't surprise me since you have to do PvP to get good swords for PvE... they really gotta change that
