More Alterac Valley changes on the horizon

When the ability to report a player as AFK was first introduced, there were mixed reactions. The tool did seem to reduce the volume of moochers in any given battleground, but it also put the onus on the honest, responsible fighters to take the time to locate and report the individual.
Because of the fact that no action would be taken against any AFK'd player until a sufficient number of reports had been received, AFK'ing continued, and went back on the rise. To combat this, Blizzard hotfixed the reports, lowering the threshold required before the debuff would be planted.
Of course, this is still inadequate. Many AFK'd players are not away from their keyboards at all. They're watching TV or a movie, and should a flag pop up on their heads, they'll just hit something or jump off a cliff and magically, their flag will disappear. Mooching honor and hindering the team will continue.
In addition, many claim that the debuff is simply not enough, because although it prevents them from gaining undeserved honor, they are still holding their team back.
What could really be done to squash this trend once and for all? The forums and our comment boxes have been hopping with ideas, and we have compiled some of the best and most interesting ones.
Drysc recently commented on the situation, but was expectedly vague. Although "fairly substantial" changes to Alterac Valley are definitely on the way in "a future patch", no details about what these changes will entail were leaked. The hope, Drysc remarked, is that they will "address some of the balance and play issues". Hopefully, these new developments will help us win the war against AFK'ers, as David Bowers points out, we really have no other option.
While we may not know how effective these changes are going to be, we can at least take solace in the fact that improvements are in fact, on the way. Do you have high hopes for this future patch, or are you remaining skeptical?

If you've tried to grind out a set for yourself, you'd probably realize that it's not very cheap. After I was through with raiding on my warrior, I decided to gear up my priest for pvp/pve and was in for a rude awakening. My routine is pretty standard- 2k honor per day earned in addition to the BG daily, so 2.5k if the daily is completed (which doesn't always happen, depending on the BG). On the weekends, I do however much honor is necessary to gain a piece of gear. I also do the daily BG on my two other toons just for the quick cash and honor.
Averaging everything out, I think I actually gear up [i]slower[/] than I did when I raided for the amount of play time invested. The problem is that you can nickel and dime it at lower levels without contributing. Only 70s should be allowed to purchase level 70 S1 gear and honor should be wiped when you hit 70. Reintroduce the blue pvp gear and allow lower levels to buy that so they can have a head start for their efforts, but not be uber-geared the second they hit the level cap.

Yes, it might take more time invested to get all the gear you want through bgs rather than raiding BUT:
1. you're on your own timetable instead of having to follow a group of 10 other people's schedules.
2. you are sure to get the equipment you want rather than hoping it will drop for you in one of the instances
3. you're not competing with another person in the raid for that equipment and having to roll for it.

Also dont forget the huge repair/pot costs for kara runs. I imagine gaining s1 gear vs kara gear is about break even on time, but really depends on so many factors. Kara gear costs far more in gold though. Its possible that you have a guild with kara on farm and you step in and get 4 epics in a night. But more likely you are lucky to get one a week, which would be about the same rate as doing BGs for 10-20 hrs a week.

The real problem is that sheer amount of time it takes to get anything honor wise.
I currently get about 800 - 1k honor per hour on a good day in AV. So to get the good PvP trinket I need to AV for approximately 16 hours or more. Doing the same thing ... over and over and over and over and over again.
If I do AB, WSG, or EoTS, I get LESS HONOR per hour so that *forces* me to do AV.
That *is* the real problem. If all the BG's would grant the same honor per hour that would go a long way to solving the "boredom" issue and allow honor grinders to at least be entertained by switching BG's a bit.
Increasing the honor rate (or lower the cost of items) would further go a looooong way to make BG's more fun again because the 'grinders' would not have to grind as much and you would be left with the people that enjoy the BG's.
Basically ... get the grinders into and out of the BG system faster and you will have less problems.
And please ... don't put BG's and PvE Raiding on the same footing. Even farming BT on a weekly basis is a heck of a lot more fun then doing AV over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

The solution is simple, once a certain amount of people have reported the AFK player, no time limit here, just a certain amount, The player is kicked out, making way for new players.
Problem Solved.
Players will learn to check for AFKers and to report them.
AFKers will get nothing but wasted time in loading screens.

One of the big issues with an Instant boot reporting system; People like myself report at the start of the BG while everyone is in the peace cave so i know i won't miss someone unless it's a new player. So you can see the problem here when all 40 people get the boot. =/

I think they should just hand out a full set of the currently available PvP gear to every 70 anytime they start a new season. It's not like it's difficult to get anyway, it just requires a time sink. If everyone could just walk up and get that gear for free, it would get rid of the AFK problem completely, along with mostly removing the gear gap for new 70's wanting to arena. It would completely destroy intro raiding, but it's already done that. At least this way some people might go back to raiding for the challenge instead of just goofing off in BG's all day for the gear.
Hawk Jan 7th 2008 7:25PM
How about if you AFK and get the debuff you are removed from the BG 1 min after getting the debuff.
Then you can no longer gain any honor of any kind for a 24 hour period.

Why are you even reading this website then?
What a douchebag.
Zerker Jan 8th 2008 12:38AM
you can report an AFK player through the Raid panel.
press 'O' and select the raid tab, right click on the players name, and report as AFK.
there is no need to find the player, and if you call out their name in /BG then all 39 active players can take a few seconds out to report them.
if you don't report them, then they keep afk'ing, and your team keeps loosing.

This won't stop you from losing, it will stop them from gaining honor. Big difference. They'll still be there, hogging the space. Blizz needs to do something desparately, i stopped playing AV b/c of the AFK problem. Others are not nearly as bad.
Liel Jan 7th 2008 8:39PM
On my server AFKs are one thing but I always see 1-2 people using anti afk bots. They sit and spam their recall trinket, or I saw a druid just sit there and spam the same hot over and over again on himself.
Sinalis Jan 7th 2008 8:46PM
I had this idea of marking the AFKers with a flag that will make them killable by both sides.... Of course this could be abused but hey it's an idea.
Aaron Jan 7th 2008 9:00PM
Blizz could make it easier to tag players AFK, bit of a hassle doing /target player and checking map again to target the next AFK char to report them isn't it?
Tyy Jan 8th 2008 12:26AM
you can right-click the player symbol on the mini-battleground-map (you can activate that by right-clicking on the bg-symbol on the corner of the regular mini-map) and menu pops up that allows you to report the player afk. If it is a cluster of player symbols, you can report them all at the same time with "report all players afk".
Once I knew about this feature, I am using it within the first 30 secs after the BG has started.
Verit Jan 7th 2008 9:36PM
Three changes I'd like to see is either buff belinda (she's supposed to be a freaking raid boss... - not soloable like she so often is) or nerf galv - now he's a raid boss.
Make iceblood have at least one more path to defend...
Return bonus honor.
Good_Idea Jan 8th 2008 1:45PM
If Iceblood had another path to defend it would be an open field.
Give Horde a choke point like the Alliance has. You can get into the Horde base far too many ways. It's ... very biased.
