Build Shop: Mage 10/47/3

Welcome back to Build Shop! After a two week hiatus to spend time with my family over the holidays, I'm back and ready to get down to some good old fashioned discussion about builds. This week we're discussing a Mage build, something that hasn't been done in a long, long time. For awhile now, Fire has been the tree of choice for the raiding mage (though some vets will remember fire-unfriendly MC and BWL). Although Fire isn't the only spec for raiding, it is the build I'm examining today.
So what makes Fire so great? Well, this build picks up all the damage-increasing talents in the Fire tree, some goodies from the Arcane tree, and even gives you a free point to put wherever you want. Hey, no one can say I'm not generous. Alright, so actually I'm not generous, there just seems to be no general consensus on where to put it, so I'm leaving it up to you. Without further ado, let's jump right in and take a look at what makes this build tick.

Hey, no one can say I'm not generous. Alright, so actually I'm not generous, there just seems to be no general consensus on where to put it, so I'm leaving it up to you. Without further ado, let's jump right in and take a look at what makes this build tick.
Arcane (10 points)
- Arcane Subtlety (2/2) - Reduces the threat from your Arcane spells by 40% and your target's resistance to all your spells by 10. You likely won't be using any of your Arcane spells too often with this build, but to be perfectly honest -- I'm spending these first 5 points to get to Arcane Concentration, in the second tier of the tree.
- Arcane Focus (3/5) - Increases your chance to hit with Arcane spells by 6%. Again, you probably won't be using Arcane spells that much, but these points were necessary to get...
- Arcane Concentration (5/5) - Easily one of my favorite things ever. AC gives you a 10% chance anytime one of your damaging spells hits a target to enter the Clearcasting state, which reduces the mana cost of your next spell by 100%.
Fire (47 points)
- Improved Fireball (5/5) - Reduces the casting time of your Fireball by half a second. Faster casts mean more damage in less time.
- Ignite (5/5) - Your fire spell crits will now cause 40% of the spell's damage to burn the target over 4 seconds with this talent.
- Flame Throwing (2/2) - Increases the range of your fire spells by 6 yards. Being able to stay further away from your target gives you some additional flexibility.
- Incineration (2/2) - Increases your chance to crit with Scorch and and Fire Blast by 4%.
- Pyroblast (1/1) - A fireball on steroids. The increased damage comes with an equally increased cast time -- 6 seconds. Primarily used as an opener in PvP when you can swing it, but not quite as popular in raids.
- Burning Soul (2/2) - Increases your chance to not lose cast time when damaged by 70% while casting Fire spells, and reduces the threat generated by Fire spells by 10%. You shouldn't be taking too much direct damage in a raid, but the threat reduction is invaluable.
- Improved Scorch (3/3) - One of the key talents in this build, Improved Scorch adds a debuff to your Scorch spell that increases Fire damage taken by 3% and stacks up to 5 times. Other magi in the group or raid can help keep this fully stacked at all times, increasing fire damage by 15%.
- Master of Elements (3/3) - Your crits from Fire and Frost spells will refund 30% of their mana cost to cast.
- Playing with Fire (3/3) - Increases all spell damage done and all spell damage taken by 3%.
- Critical Mass (3/3) - Increases your chance to crit with Fire spells by 6%. A fantastic talent, and a prerequisite to Combustion.
- Blast Wave (1/1) - An AoE attack that causes fire damage and dazes targets for 6 seconds.
- Fire Power (5/5) - Increases fire damage dealt by 10%.
- Pyromaniac (3/3) - Increases the chance to crit with fire spells and the mana cost of fire spells by 3%.
- Combustion (1/1) - On a 3 minute cooldown, and should be used with caution. Once activated, this causes each fire spell you cast to increase your chance to crit with fire spells by 10% until you've crit 3 times.
- Molten Fury (2/2) - Another great talent. This one increases the damage you deal with all your spells by 20% once your target drops below 20% health. Great for helping to burn down a target quickly.
- Empowered Fireball (5/5) - Adds another 15% to your Fireball spell damage coefficient.
- Dragon's Breath (1/1) - Fire's answer to Frost's Cone of Cold. This spell causes fire damage in a cone in front of the caster, but also disorients targets for 3 seconds. Not the most useful talent in a raid, but nice to have nonetheless.
Frost (3 points)
- Elemental Precision (3/3) - Reduces the mana cost of and increases your chance to hit with your Fire and Frost spells by 3%.
As I said earlier, there should be 1 point leftover, so you can put it wherever you like. A popular choice seems to be to put it into Improved Fire Blast, but it's up to you!
That wraps up this edition of Build Shop, but I'll be back again next week! What do you want to see on Build Shop? Send me an email with your questions or comments, and we'll talk shop.

Way to pick a fight =/
You just agreed with the jist of everything that Chris said. =/

Ironic timing is Ironic.

I would put the first 5 points in the Arcane tree, in improved arcane missles as that is the only 100% resist to spell pushback you got unless you keep 2 tier four around. I just don't think those other two are worth anything given that the only time you will use arcane will be on mobs that are immune to fire, like when farmin those 10,000 fire elementals for primal fires.
TotalBiscuit Jan 8th 2008 1:27PM
As you said, that's what 2 piece T4 is used for. It's not like any mage worth their salt would actually use that crap for anything else anyway, and they're hardly difficult to get.
Wired Jan 8th 2008 1:41PM
Arcane Focus also helps with Spellsteal. If you're tanking the mage in HKM in Gruuls, and you miss one, you can be a goner (assuming your healers aren't paying attention).
schwonga Jan 8th 2008 1:43PM
Umm, after reading all the bashing comments... all I have to say is your build is perfectly vaild and useful and the only thing i saw wrong was this typo with pyromaniac, it should read
Pyromaniac (3/3) - Increases the chance to crit with fire spells and REDUCES the mana cost of fire spells by 3%
Oh and your a wonderful person... i guess

Seriously, can we get someone else writing articles about mages? Learn to do some friggin research before posting. Whoever is supplying you information on mages needs to be slapped.
Either do it right or don't do it at all. You should not be paid for this article as it's a bunch of trash.
TotalBiscuit Jan 8th 2008 1:54PM
To be fair, buildshop is a rather dangerous set of articles, as is anything that involves theorycrafting. I'd personally leave it up to the class-specific experts to do the writing for that kind of thing, and incorporate it into the class-specific columns.
Aurdon Jan 8th 2008 2:11PM
I do recall them making a post (or maybe it was mentioned in the podcast) that they were looking for a new writer for the AB column. Perhaps you applied and didn't make it?
If it really really bugs you about the information that is given here then start your own blog and comment. WOW Insider even allows you to link to your blog from comments to my understanding. The staff seems to be pretty open about looking at things from all directions and frequently link to other bloggers websites in the articles. I know that if you were to out shine the mage column with your wisdom of the class within your blog, then you would probably have alot of happy readers both here and there.
Point is, give'em a break and get up and do something about it yourself instead of moaning how we need a better representative.
TotalBiscuit Jan 8th 2008 2:18PM
Right now, nobody's made it, so who knows?
As regards to the information I put out, I've already done it in the form of podcasts, and WoW Insider already links to us frequently :>
I think people are being a little harsh on the guy personally. Most of his points are correct, he's just off on a few and shows a little inexperience when it comes to the role of mages in raid content. However, if nobody constructively criticizes, then no improvement will be made and besides, this has turned into an interesting discussion, as things on WoW Insider frequently do. Which is why it's such a good site, the articles incite debate.
blisster Jan 8th 2008 3:27PM
For both Omegi and TotalBiscuit: I've read through the article as well as the "bashing" posts and I think both of you need to take a huge breath and step away from the keys. Surely a 25-man raiding mage would know more about Icy Veins and the new Theory-crafted specs in order to eek out half a second more damage via macro'd abilities roped to Cold Snap and the [Total Trinket of Magi Uberwocky], but I seriously doubt that audience is the purpose of the Buildshop series. I'd much prefer someone come to my groups or guild with a cursory knowledge of why a talent build works a particular way rather than zero knowledge at all and I believe this is the user that Buildshop is aimed at.
Constructive criticism is great, but you seriously need to work on your delivery. It may be great information, but laden with vinegar rather than honey isn't going to make it well received. I agree with your points, but your comments came across as inflammatory, curt and pretentious, and there's an abundance of that already over on the official WoW forums.
TotalBiscuit Jan 8th 2008 3:48PM
If spreading ignorance, which is then defended by people who cry that we're 'not being nice' to the author when we point out what's wrong with his article, is the purpose of Build-shop, then Build-shop needs to stop entirely.
Delivery be damned, I honestly couldn't give two hoots about offending people's delicate sensibilities online. I swear people's skin is thinner than the reasoning they use to justify their whining. Information is information, and it is correct information, end of.
blisster Jan 8th 2008 4:02PM
"Information is information, and it is correct information, end of." If that were truly the case, then image consultants, lobbyists, politicians and their myriad advisers would all be out of work. You're delivery is contentious to the point of being rude - I merely suggest you work on it....for your own benefit I might add.
I'll just go ahead and walk away from this one knowing you are all in-the-know about some part of our shared, little, arguably-meaningless, virtual world, and an absolute idiot all in the same stroke. Irony comes when one least expects it I suppose. Cheers.
theRaptor Jan 8th 2008 7:40PM
Why would TB change his delivery? He uses the same delivery in his podcasts and it makes him hugely popular. And I think TB's point is more along the lines that delivery *should not* matter, it is the information that should matter. But of course idiots would rather believe a pretty lie, then the ugly truth.
Im a raiding mage, and was deep fire until last week. To put out a build shop on deep fire when it just basically became obsolete, shows a lack of understanding of raiding builds. Really, it took minimal research to see most raiding fire mages were waiting to respec deepfire/IV.
Aurdon Jan 8th 2008 2:03PM
I think its a good reflection on what was a solid build for quite awhile. Now with a patch out today and new tallents coming, some people are bound to change abit...even those who Theorycraft things to death.
Even if a build was based off of the new changes people would bash it to death as absurd use of points. Nobody is going to have the same views about everything. ( http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/4622/ia3yp.jpg )There are parts to like and dislike about every topic including this build. I still would point mage friends to review it and give it a try. You might be able to squeeze more dps out with "the next new build" but who cares...specs are supposed to reflect your play style. They are supposed to differentiate your character from another. If everyone is to only spec for uber dps then there would be no need for talent trees.
Chris, I appreciate you taking the time to lay this build out for those who haven't tried it yet. I used this build for quite awhile and it served me well.
PS: TB I've heard your magecrafting and loved every min of them. Great insight and logic on every known build at the time... You should do another with the new IV build...even if its a short show.
TotalBiscuit Jan 8th 2008 2:05PM
I probably will. I need to reactivate my account and play around a bit with it. I was also planning to explain how 61/0/0 and 50/0/11 works too. Now that the patch is finally out, I'll probably release another Mage podcast. Expect one in the next week or so.
TotalBiscuit Jan 8th 2008 2:23PM
Additionally, the following post gives some great information about Icy Veins - http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=3547655178&sid=1
From the guy who brought you the mage Theorycraft-o-matic.
Adam Jan 8th 2008 2:56PM
I cannot explain how bad the timing of this article is. Not only is 10-48-3 old, even the new 2-48-11 may be also. With icey vains it will take a few weeks to figure out the best specs. With the mana gem buff and IV, it looks like a 50-0-11 may be a serious contender now.
TotalBiscuit Jan 8th 2008 3:25PM
Arcane was always a serious contender for anyone with 2 piece T5 upwards. Before quitting I was doing 1.4k DPS on Gorefiend-style (nuke it nuke it nuke it) fights with no mana problems what so ever. Nothing like pulling aggro on Najentus with 7 6.7k crits in a row :>
Incidently the mana-gem buff is not going to make arcane a viable dps spec for anyone who doesn't have the appropriate level of gear and at least guaranteed shadow-priest support.
Abraxxis Jan 8th 2008 3:29PM
1) Arcane Subtlety is very important for trash AoE - 40% threat reduction combined with 10 yard radius beats a ranged AoE with a smaller radius.
2) Blastwave is still valuable in Tier 5 trash. Mob heading for the healer? Blastwave! Slows the trash right down, giving the tank time to pick him up and the healer time to move or shield. If you Frost Nova, you will have nailed to the floor an angry mob right in the middle of the caster camp.
3) Pyroblast - love those 2 second Pyroblasts after you steal the 300% haste increase from the trash before the chickenhawk.
4) "Nub up to pull aggro" -- apparently you haven't seen murlocs yet. Lots and lots of murlocs. Grgllgrgllgrgll!
5) Spellsteal is absolutely essential on Krosh Firehand, and having 1% to resist decreases you likelihood of chain resists. When you have that much stam gear on, you have to sacrifice your normal amount of hit.
