Dorgabas on the official forums and meth on MMO-Champion's forums both reported the discovery today, each with a screenshot to provide veracity to their claims. You can check them out by clicking here. The shots are of two different players, one of whom is on a German-speaking server. In the shot you can read his conversation with a GM, which supposedly translates to him asking the GM about the limit and the GM scratching his head in response.
You can check out both threads linked above for more information, including a rough translation of the German conversation and an explanation of why this amount is the limit due to the game's coding.

Am I the only one who thinks having that much gold is SICK? How much does a person have to play to get that amount? Seriously, some people need to get perspective in life and get their priorities straight.

Alright, I made a (more or less) accurate translation of the German GM-Player conversation. I hope it is of some use.
[GM] Hello (Player), I am Gamemaster (GM). Please excuse the disturbance, do you have a moment to talk about your ticket regarding the gold limit?
[PLAYER] Hello
[PLAYER] Yes, I have time.
[GM] So you reached the gold limit?
[PLAYER] No idea
[PLAYER] Is there something like that?
[PLAYER] I can't receive any more money via mail or trade
[GM] That's what the message you received is saying. Did you try to send part of the money to one of your other characters?
[PLAYER] Yes, that works
[PLAYER] What surprises me is the strange figure
[GM] So you found a way to get past the limit. By the way, you caused some amazed GM faces around here
[PLAYER] Too bad, I wanted to become an in-game millionaire
[GM] The figure is probably so strange because the gold is not saved in the 10th decimal system. But I'm also just speculating wildly.
[PLAYER] I thought so myself
[GM] Is there anything else I can do for you?
[PLAYER] No thanks, now I know it's not a bug. Thanks for the help.
[GM] Then I wish you a nice day, (Player) and still good luck with your trades.

But think about the economic impact you could have on the realm with a little manipulation of this amount of money in the AHs of the opposing faction. Hmmmmmm

I can confirm this. A few PTR's ago I xfered my main who is an enchanter over to the PTR and Sold Enchants for 20kg a piece. People would get all 5kg from all 4 of their premades just to get their 'leet' gear enchanted. After a day or so of selling i noticed that I could not get any more gold.....I know i took a SS of this but I am unable to find it at this time. Ill keep digging around for it.
But yes...this is the gold cap. And no i was not able to talk a GM into xfering over to my server for me :(

could have easily told you that...try adding 9999999999999 gold on a private server...it just stops at that number, health too i dont know the exact number..i can look it up though

I wish they'd update the page on worldofwarcraft.com that says there's no limit to gold. It's not ever going to affect me, but I'm a stickler like that xD

Is it really that hard to create a Level 1 alt and run him to somewhere with at least a mailbox?
Your sorted then, 107,374,182 gold to be exact, spread over 50 toons.
Even more if you pay to transfer some toons to a different realm, but then your getting silly, nobody will ever hit 100million gold - will they?
