Two Bosses Enter: Gruul vs. C'Thun

- Hurtful Strike hits the 2nd target on the threat list for a high amount of melee damage (12k to 13k). If there isn't a second target in melee range, Gruul will hit his primary target with Hurtful Strike. The damage increases with each Growth.
- Ground Slam: An AoE knockback.
- Gronn Lord's Grasp: After being knocked back by Ground Slam, players receive this debuff, which reduces movement speed by 20%. Stacks.
- Stoned: After 5 stacks of Gronn Lord's Grasp, the player will become stunned by Stoned.
- Shatter: After Stoning his targets, Gruul will Shatter them, dealing damage (more if players are close to one another.)

- Eye Beam: A nature damage attack that targets a single player, but jumps from the first player to subsequent players in range with increasing damage each jump.
- Dark Glare: An incredibly high damage (read: no player could survive it) shadow attack that sweeps 180 degrees across the room.
- Eye Tentacles: These tentacles spawn at intervals throughout the fight. Individually, they have low health, but they spawn in groups and do a Mind Flay-type spell. (With generally meaner "giant" versions spawning in phase two.)
- Claw Tentacles: These tentacles also spawn at intervals throughout the fight and have low health. However, unlike the Eye Tentacles, these do melee damage. (With generally meaner "giant versions spawning in phase two.)
- Stomach of C'Thun: In phase two, tentacles will swallow players and send them to C'Thun's stomach. As you might imagine, it's not a friendly place, and every few seconds damaging debuffs will stack on anyone inside. There's an easy exit from the stomach, but killing Flesh Tentacles inside the stomach weakens C'Thun, allowing him to be hurt and killed -- so you might want to stick around.
So we have two bosses that are present unique problems for players, but might not pose such a threat to each other...! Who wins and who loses in this epic battle? It's nearly time for you to to tell us, but before that, a reminder: we're considering these two bosses with approximately equal health and approximately equal damage output capabilities. We aren't making this into a math equation of who's got more health than who, so when you cast your vote, cast it on fighting style, not highest level. You're welcome to factor the lore of each character into the equation, but don't presume that one would win out because they're in a higher level dungeon.

Gruul has three million HP; I think he can soak that a few times, if not dodge it occasionally.

Lore wise: C'thun
Game mechanic wise: C'thun
With the neutral zone C'thun would avoid cave in damage. Shatter would hardly damage him considering no other "him's?" close to him for shatter to multiply damage, doubt tentacles would count for this.
Only thing Gruul has going for him is if he somehow survives long enough to reach grow 50+ or something absurd enough to survive the constant eye beam's, dark glare's (dunno if this is counted considering these face-offs usually don't allow one-shot or what used to be one-shot attacks), tentacle attacks, and if Gruul managed to kill him the first time having to deal with C'thun phase 2.
Doubt this one would have been close.

Agreed.
Though gruul is rather large, he just might be able to poke c'thun in his eye!
stachu Jan 26th 2008 8:16PM
c'thun is a old god, U r fighting against only 1 eye of him (and stomach), U cant just oppose giant monkey and old god
Meira Jan 26th 2008 8:18PM
The real question here is: will C'thun able to comport Gruul in his stomach when the gronn is really huge?!
/silly off
C'thun might win this one... and win princess huhuran... only with Illidan (the twins will fall, I know it) C'thun will have serious problems.

C'Thun would probably kill himself trying to swallow Gruul. Gruul wins.
Kanuris Jan 26th 2008 9:08PM
C'thun hands down. Eye beam will cut off a large chunk of Gruul's hp and without the stomach weaking Gruul won't be able to last long enough to lay on the hurt.

c'thun will asplode trying to swallow grull.

Between the two bosses in this fight there is a total of 2 eyes. Though one is gigantic so that sort of makes up for it.

If C'thul gets his frikkin' lasarz, then Gruul's Shater should stack on the tendrils for massive dmg's.
A beserking monkey boy shattering everything in site will pour da BBQ sauce on C'thul.

You can't knock back the tentacles.
If you can't knock them back, they won't stack to Stoned, they won't get Shattered.

It's mainly whether Gruul with survive to phase 2, if he does, he'll always be the one in the stomach, and with gruul's huge melee damage, the flesh tentacles would be going down left and right. I'm voting for Gruul being able to DPS enough to survive phase 1.
Deusmortis Jan 26th 2008 10:51PM
At first glance, I was ready to hand this one to the Old God. The more I think on it, however, the more points Gruul starts to score.
Shattering tentacles have some massive damage potential. Gruul is massively powerful, and may well be able to take advantage of C'thun's weakened state.
In the end, I think that this one will be close. If it were to repeat several times, each combatant would pick up several wins. That being said, I'm going to throw Gruul a vote. I'm not sure that I believe that he'd win more often than C'thun, but the vivid images of a grow #20 Gruul ripping C'thun in half flasing through my mind are enough to convince me.
rafe.brox Jan 28th 2008 2:24PM
That's very similar to what I'm thinking, too. I used to think C'thun was untouchable, but Gruul's ability to take and deliver a tremendous beating, along with what he can do to the stuff around him (decimating the stomach in Phase 2, especially after several growths).... big ugly got my vote over Toenail Of The Elder God.

Gruul punches Cthun in the eye.
Gruul wins.
Cthun just cries and mutters cursewords.

*If* Gruul is smart enough to run around in a circle and isnt color blind to red or something, Gruul wins. If Gruul stands in one spot or just can't seem to move fast enough (cough cough like countless raiders lol), C'Thun wins.
If the tentacles are vulnerable to Shatter, Gruul wins. So are they mobs or pets? Also going to assume that Gruul is immune to Mind Flay, since he is immune to a Priest's Mind Flay.
There are a LOT of ifs in this one. I am going to assume that both bosses are controlled by a human player that isn't an idiot. In that case Gruul wins by a smallish margin.
Chris Deke Jan 27th 2008 12:02AM
Gruul has the advantage here due to the fact that he's highly mobile. If you've ever seen both tanks die during an attempt, he moves really damn fast as he runs around one-shotting all the dps. Given this, he could easily avoid the eyebeam and survive to stage2.
At that point, shatter would be multiplying off of the eye stalks as well as the Tentacles inside C'Thun for incredible amounts of damage. C'Thun would then be weakened while Gruul continues to grow his way to a win.

# Ground Slam: An AoE knockback.
# Gronn Lord's Grasp: After being knocked back by Ground Slam, players receive this debuff, which reduces movement speed by 20%. Stacks.
# Stoned: After 5 stacks of Gronn Lord's Grasp, the player will become stunned by Stoned.
# Shatter: After Stoning his targets, Gruul will Shatter them, dealing damage (more if players are close to one another.)
C-thun and his various parts can not be knocked back. Thus, they can not be affected by the gronn lord's grasp. Stoned, is dependent on the previous skill to take effect (not like it matters. he's immune to stuns also.) No stoned, = no shatter. GG C-thun dominates gruul
or, do these contests ignore those such immunities?
