As our own
Zach Yonzon has pointed out,
Warsong Gulch, the capture-the-flag battleground, is broken. Despite Warsong being his favorite
battleground, there are
several issues confronting PvP'ers.
Here's the short version:
- WSG has the lowest honor gain per time played of the four battlegrounds, even on its holiday weekend.
- Warsong is the least effective battleground from which to farm honor.
- Warsong reputation is not necessary to acquire PvP gear. In addition, reputation gains with the faction are low.
- Games often last a very long time.
Fortunately,
Drysc commented this morning on a
forum thread started by
Moobert, designed to call attention to the issue and draw out a response. While Drysc confirms that the developers are aware of the problems with Warsong Gulch, and that in fact, several possible solutions are already being tested internally. Unfortunately, he cautions that these changes are not likely to be seen any time soon.
How do you feel about Warsong right now? Do you love it or hate it and why?

WSG is very annoying with the low amount of honor that is given out. I believe something needs to be balanced all around for them to make people besides the super elitest want to play them. IDK i don't work for Blizz but maybe something can be done to the HP system there and make it more interesting.

Exactly, yesterday I was in a premade that got into a match against anouther premade. Two hours later, it was 1-1, and we just let them win, since the ~100 more honor we would have received wasn't worth it.

I love WSG, but I get frustrated when I see 1 resto druid solo our entire team. Games can last forever and honor is way too low.
I think WSG could be helped by simply setting a reset timer on the flags. If the flags don't get capped after X minues (ideally, it'd be random so addons couldn't alert everyone before it happens), they get reset. That way, teams could get caught off guard.

"I love WSG, but I get frustrated when I see 1 resto druid solo our entire team..."
I do that! Feral, for the win, but I do that! That's one of the reasons I like WSG.

It's about as much fun as stabbing forks into my eyes. I only ever enter when I need marks.
Dotixi Jan 29th 2008 4:37PM
I try to avoid WSG most of the time - though dailes will get me in there to be annoyed for a very long time cuz no one will CAPTURE THE DANG FLAG!!!!
Shawn Jan 29th 2008 4:39PM
I play it because it's fun and requires a different kind of strategy. Sure, the honor sucks but it is a nice change of pace because 1 player can have a big impact.

I love WSG I just hate the honor it dishes out. I am never scared to grab that flag even though I am just a mage. I get a real adrenaline rush blinking my way back to base with that flag. It's unfortunate, its really very fun but the honor is not worth the time.

Interesting post.
It appears as though whoever wrote this is repeating themselves erroneously to try and get a point across.
For instance, point one as to why warsong gulch needs to be changed
"* WSG has the lowest honor gain per time played of the four battlegrounds, even on its holiday weekend."
If WSG has the lowest honour gain per time played of the four battlegrounds, wouldn't you assume this would be across all realm on the holiday weekend, since they all proportionately get the same amount of honour gain??
So unless you wanted to add words for the sake of adding words (or you hadn't read what you wrote/copied in the first place) what's the point in saying "even on it's holiday weekend" the second part of point one...??
"* Warsong is the least effective battleground from which to farm honor."
Ok, this is repeating point 1, you just told us that it has the lowest honour gain of any battleground.
" * Warsong reputation is not necessary to acquire PvP gear. In addition, reputation gains with the faction are low."
WSG reputation may not be 'necessary' but is there gear you can get with it that you can't get any other way??? Is this not the case with the other battlegrounds??
" * Games often last a very long time."
Again, repeating points 1 and 2, we know that they take a long time comparatively from your first two points. Also I don't think you can make a point of "less time=more fun", which appears as though this is the point your trying to make.

I say - do away with the flags and the first side to gain 100 kills win. Simple and direct and it's what goes on now anyway. A game would last 10 minutes tops.
At the very least I wish they would add a timer and cap the match at 15-20 minutes - or allow your team to cap a flag if your flag has already been taken making it more of a race and less hide-and-seek. I think we can all agree that anything that could speed it up would be greatly appreciated.

I never go without the serious need for marks or a premade (preferably both). I've had too many games where 3 paladins sit on the flag for 40+ min.
Something needs to be done, because I do enjoy CtF in any number of other games.
Theadrick Jan 29th 2008 4:42PM
I hate it for the reasons previously stated. What used to be (generally) the shortest BG is now potentially the longest. I don't even queue up on bonus honor weekends or if it is the BG daily.
Malachi154 Jan 30th 2008 11:09AM
Ditto....
Arnold Jan 29th 2008 4:42PM
I enjoy it, the games can be exhilarating and fun. Except when you have a game which drags out because one team sits in the room with their whole team guarding the flag, sending only one person out to recap their own flag, and the other team doesn't have enough dps to take down the flag carrier to recap it which would enable them to cap it themselves... I hate WSG turtles with a passion. Oh well.
It just makes you wonder though: They are aware of the problem, they are testing it, and they won't fix it "any time soon"? ? ? I hope that means that they are too busy coming up with 20 more capture the flag maps instead... not likely...
Adam Jan 29th 2008 4:44PM
As a resto druid, I love WSG. But I only play it for the BG daily, when I have a premade, or just for fun. When I want to grind honor its anything but.
The main thing they need to do is put a time limit on it since its the only one that can go on indefinitely. Though they'd have to be very careful with whatever they do so they don't encourage more turtling.
Heilig Jan 29th 2008 5:00PM
Of course you love WSG as a resto druid. You're the star of the show. You are an unkillable flag carrier with massive armor, high health, immunity to snares and polymorphs, and instacast heals that can't be effectively counterspelled and heal you when they are dispelled. What's not to like?
Naix Jan 29th 2008 4:47PM
I like WSG but it does need some improvements.
-Timer for the map should be 20 minutes
At the end of the 20 minutes whoever has the most flag caps wins.
- You can only hold the flag for 7 minutes.
After 7 minutes the flag is returned to base.
- Graveyards need guards/Your invincible for 15 seconds after spawning
Nothing spoils a game like dieing to fast
-Increase honor gained a little
Keeps peeps coming back
This should satisfy many requests. Now if only a Blizzard VP would copy and paste this post to the developers. I bet the changes would happen next patch day.
ninjasuperspy Jan 29th 2008 4:51PM
Seriously. All of this. I can't stand that the best healing plate bracers pre-kara come from WSG marks, and I have to farm 20 of them. I'll certainly not have the 12k Honor I need by the time I've got the marks, but that is what AV is for.
infection Jan 29th 2008 6:14PM
How you would get guards that protect you for 15 seconds at the gy to work, is beyond me.
Carry the flag to the gy and turtle? 3 on 1 and you have the flag? Run to the gy and let the opposite faction get murdered.
Flag carrier coming out and you just spawn? You can't be killed for 15 seconds... go to town.
The rest of your points might be valid, but not this one.
The main one i agree with is a timer.
Hoggersbud Jan 29th 2008 8:59PM
You don't need, or want Guards for this, what you want is a GY you can't get to except by dying, with multiple routes off it so people can be blocked in very easily.
Much simpler.
