"Make them bleed blue"
Screwface on the forums has an interesting idea about a PvP tweak, even though his implementation isn't quite right. He says that since healers are so overpowered in PvP (well that's his first problem), abilities like Rend and Garrote should not only bleed blood, but also bleed mana off of casters. Of course, simply making all bleed abilities also take off mana would make them overpowered on their own, so his plan of making a sweeping change like that doesn't quite compute. But the idea of more abilities that directly affect mana is an interesting one. Right now, there are only four "mana drain" spells in the game (warlocks can steal mana for themselves, priests can turn mana into damage, and hunters can sting mana off of a target). But as much as mana pools and regen have grown in the last patch, it's true that there hasn't been a balance in the opposite direction. No, warriors don't need another buff, but what if shaman were given a mana drain totem somewhere in the next ten levels? Or Boomkins got a spell that negated mana over time?
It's nothing to play around with lightly. But Blizzard does have to come up with ten more levels of abilities and talents for the next expansion, and messing with mana is something they haven't done much of lately. In Northrend we might not only be worried about health and DPS, but mana draining and mana attacks might become another piece of the class balance puzzle.

Paladins have blessing of wisdom, it's the same as mana spring, actually better. Mana spring for shamans has a 20/30 yard radius, pathetic.
I see your point though, but many classes are screwed quickly by mana burning mechanics. In 10 seconds a priest (with talents) can spam mana burn 5 times, reducing my very limited mana pool by 5000 and also doing 2500 damage. In that 10 seconds I could be stunlocked or feared, unable to do anything. It hardly seems fair.

I have a 70 resto druid. It's sad that I can take her into a 2v2 arena with my boyfriend (Who plays a rogue) and Just keep HoT's stacked on both of us and not have to actually CAST a heal.
3 Lifeblooms + Rejuv + Swiftmend = I'm not dieing very soon.
I sit back keep him HoTed up and we win 75% of the time. (I had a rogue come after me once and I out healed his damage.)

I don't really feel like being kind. My statement is this:
"Fuck you, get off my mana."
P.S. I also want to mock the OP for being so desperate for material to steal from other sites that even retarded troll posts get used.

It seems to me that we're having some confusion regarding this class called "Healers". Yes, you all see where I'm going by now I'm sure... there is no "Healers" class. Once that revelation is absorbed then maybe we can manage some sensible discussion I hope.
Now my experience with healing classes is comprised of my 70 Holy/Disc Priest and the glut of Healadins in the Arena... so
by-and-large this is what I'm going to speak on. Based on this experience I am of the opinion that saying that Disc and/or Holy Priests are overpowered in PvP is bad comedy.
To corroborate this point I've included a simple breakdown below of a healing Priest's defenses versus the focused attention of the entire &!#%$ other team:
Cloth (Generously classified as armor) vs. Do I really need to waste time on this one?
Inner Fire (Armor buff... on cloth) vs. Please see above.
Psychic Scream (Multi-fear) vs. [Insert fear negating trinket/spell/ability/racial here.]
PW: Shield (Finite damage absorption) vs. Purge/Shield Slam/2 shots From just about anyone/Etc.
As you can see... under the most common of circumstances (i.e. focused fire) a healing Priests health generally hits zero almost before they have a chance to touch their mana. As such, I fail to see how anyone could conceivably label a healing Priest as overpowered in any PvP situation... much less how their mana has anything to do with anything.
Now... Healadins... this is alot more simple. Heals + Plate + Finite Invulnerability = Win. There's your OP... siccum!
Again... I can't get into the nitty-gritty on healing Shaman and Druids... but it seems to me that being able to use mail armor & a shield and being able to sprout a platoon of trees to defend you, respectively, have to be considered as significant aids to survival.
So maybe 3 out of 4 healing classes are overpowered in PvP... I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that one is. But including healing Priests is a joke.
Kamileon Jan 29th 2008 11:30PM
Healing druids don't "sprout a platoon of trees to defend [them]".
Solander Jan 29th 2008 11:26PM
Personally I've been hoping for Rip to drain mana.
Arena KittyBears could use some love.
Ambril Jan 29th 2008 11:53PM
Don't piss off the mages. Nothing good would come from that corner if this line of game development were pursued.
Mana regen is already a broken mechanic as it is.

Eventually, in my mind, I would like to see the somewhat the opposite of healers in terms of health v. mana. A class that has a huge pool of HP that restores on a regular basis; that can be converted in to mana and distributed to other players, I believe, would indeed lend itself to being an "elite" class due to the need to constantly and individually balance one's health with ability to do damage one's self and one's party members to do damage. I have no idea where this would fit in the lore; but it may bear need for further scrutiny.
Tylenol Jan 30th 2008 3:53AM
Mike this was not a good post at all, how could you side with a troll. Did you think the mechanics of this before you did a post of approval. How could you agree on something as ridiculous as this..... heres me losing faith on yet another WOW insider blogger.........
Heres an idea for another post, fresh material... since its so OP, why don't we remove stealth from the game!!! ... who's with me?!.... no stealth... no stelath....
Woad Jan 30th 2008 6:57AM
I was having a discussion along these lines the other day with a Guild-mate (a high ranked in Arena, Priest), we were considering whether new rogue poisons would be a good idea.
We concluded that more variety of poisons would be great, and both of us agreed that poison that drained mana would be a great addition to the rogue arsenal, without unbalancing PVP.
Hokuto Jan 30th 2008 7:49AM
Yeah, because healing on PvP is already too fun.
Give everyone a skill to make us bleed blue and you'll have zero healers on PvP. Have fun with that.
Zali Jan 30th 2008 11:52AM
Healers are OP??? Thats the dumbest thing I have read on this site so far. Sure, I'm useful in a raid or a dungeon but in PVP I go down faster than a $5 whore at a Gnome Hooker convention. Tell me, is there anyone here who hasn't spoken/typed the words, "Take out the healer first." At best, I hope my Arena teams go up against noobs and idiots. At worst I hope that my team is able to keep me alive long enough for me to keep them alive long enough to get the odds in our favor. Against a lock or a hunter I have no chance, against a mage I am 2 or 3 shotted in about 6 seconds, rogues I have a shot against if I see them coming, but if they hit me first, there is no chance because I stay stunned till I die, so I don't even get a chance to use ANY mana. I may get some healing spells that crit 8000 HP, but it is at a cost of damage, since I'm lucky to crit 1600 on Starfire or 1000 on moonfire. If you want to talk OP, lets talk about that friggin mage that two shots me with fireballs from so far away that they are out of my range and I can't even fight back because by the time I get hit by the first fireball and even know I'm under attack, the second fireball is already on the way.
OP my wooden ass!
Zali Jan 30th 2008 12:26PM
And stop confusing a Feral or Balance Druid with a Resto Druid. Resto Druids heal. Feral druids can only heal in NE/Tauren form, and in bear form (on themselves only with a monster cooldown.) Boomkins can't heal a paper cut. Both Boomkins (balance) and feral druids have some serious smack down. Resto druids can keep themselves standing a little longer in TOL form by just casting constant heals on themselves, which might piss off a warrior trying to beat all hell out of him... but did you notice during that beat down that the OP healing tree could only hit you with it's fists and couldn't cast a single damaging spell at you. Yea. Thats OP for sure. We do as much damage as a critter. Once again, I can't believe how amazingly stupid this whole thing is.
Good_Idea Jan 30th 2008 12:26PM
Imo there are already too many mana burn abilties in the game already, and they are incredibly overpowered (in arena) imo. There is a reason mana drain arena teams are popular now, especially based on the unnerfed priest mana burn.
Adding more drain spells or abilties to the game would be silly, they're already going to have to rebalance what they currently have.
Oh and someone said Viper Sting is a minor annoyance? Yeah right, with the way hunters can kite and trap people, combined with a 1800 mana drain every 15 seconds, it's brutal.
Even classes that can clean viper off have a hard time because it will usually tick at least once (300+ mana) and then it costs me another 300 mana to remove it, if that even works (30% resistance seems like more at times) and the stupid poison pet.
So viper is a little more of an annoyance, in endurance matches (or even times when hunter can kite DPS) it's a game breaker.
Sloegin Jan 30th 2008 12:40PM
Sure, add more mana draining tools, just as soon as you add rage and energy drains. Why should some classes have a 2nd bar that is open season, and others remain inviolate?

In Mike's defense, pulling a topic off the WOW forums where a lot of us refuse to go because of the lack of moderation is not defined as a "slow news day" or a "lack of original content". For the bunch of us who chose to post to this topic, we've had good discussion and I wouldn't have been aware that this topic had been tossed about.
That being said, I'm wondering if the original poster had a bad day with PVP and has decided to blame healers. There have been countless times when I've seen in a BG, "They are getting heals from somewhere. FIND THE HEALER!" And it wasn't so long ago, Insider had a post bemoaning the LACK of healing in BGs. That's the more common sentiment I see, people shouting, "Where are the heals?", not screaming that the healers are running amok.
Is there a problem with healing in PVP? If so, what "exactly" is the problem? Seems to me that if Bllizz starts monkeying with one set of spells, there will be screams that someone else has received beneficial treatment and "my" class has not.
I have one comment for the original poster, "Learn to kill your opponent." Then it matters not.

Every time a rogue or a druid asks for yet another pvp buff, an angel cries in heaven. Keep that in mind everybody.
Rudolphe Jan 30th 2008 1:41PM
Rogues aren't that bad. i dont see why so many people complain about them. As a holy pally i dont have that much of a problem keeping my distance from them, plus there's 3 ways get out out of thier Stuns even though it's temporary. Druids cyclone and priest mana burn is what needs to be addressed. To be able to drain 1k mana every 3 seconds is ridiculous. Cyclone is just... a major f'ing annoyance, mainly because there is no counter except for a trinket on a 5 minute cooldown.
MechChef Jan 30th 2008 2:49PM
I'm a rogue, and I don't care about draining mana. When I go after a target, one of us is going to be dead long before said person is OoM. Either I lock down their movement and shut out their spells, subsequently mudering them with my blades. Or, they slip out of range, and kite me away to a completely-dead (versus undead) version of myself.
How about something else we can all agree on? Nerf locks. (I'm the prime caster killer, and even I hate them)
Proctologist Jan 30th 2008 5:01PM
Okay so if you give them more mana attacking attacks, you going to give the priests attacks to take away a warriors rage, a rogues 5 point system, and also give the casters more abilities to attack other casters mana?
