Blizz opens up brand new realm, more transfer opportunities
Blizzard has launched the first new realm since the release of The Burning Crusade. It's a PvE realm called Ghostlands, and it's part of the latest batch of free realm transfers. You ready for the list of available transfers? Okay, here we go!
If you're from the PvE realms Aerie Peak, Aggramar, Alexstrasza, Alleria, Argent Dawn, Blackhand, Cenarius, Doomhammer, Hellscream, or Whisperwind, you can move to Ghostlands.
The rest are PvP servers. Arthas, Burning Blade, Illidan, Skullcrusher, and Warsong residents may all move to Balnazzar. Folks from Mal'Ganis, Mug'thol, Sargeras, Tichondrius, and Twisting Nether may move to Onyxia. Finally, if you've been playing on Gorefiend, Kel'Thuzad, Mannoroth, Shattered Hand, or Smolderthorn, you can jump on over to Malorne.
Phew. So there it is. Anyway, it's exciting that a new realm is opening up. The community's been twiddling its thumbs for a while now.

you cant make a new character on ghostlands

Hehe, but can't you just make a character on one of the realms that can transfer to ghostlands, then use the free character transfer to get there. ;)
Though, I would like to have a plain old new realm with no free transfers, its all ways fun leveling up on a new realm with crazy economy.

I just logged to Ghostlands and see the Create New Character button.

You can click the button, put a character but you can't actually make a new character.

As a resident of Ghostlands EU, this news seemed really WTFFY to me when I first read it.

Yes - you gotta love it when WoW Insider forget that their traffic comes from both the US and EU... yet in posts like this they never tell you which side they are on about.

In all honesty, I'm saddened that Blizzard is allowing character transfers to Ghostlands at all. Part of the fun of a new server is giving everyone a level playing field, in my opinion; allowing Sir Has-Illidan-On-Farm to transfer takes the fun away from everyone else for the "server-first" self-aggrandizement of a very, very few.
Blizzard ought to make a new server /new/; if you want a character there, roll a new one. Make a server first an /accomplishment/.

I agree. I was just saying this morning that I wish they'd make a new realm and wouldn't allow transfers. It would give late comers like me a chance. My realm is full of people that have been 70 since right after TBC launched. Then people like hit 70 and it's like, oh, all 70's are not equal. In gear, they are about 10 levels higher than me.
Jasperwind Feb 1st 2008 9:24AM
Edit: "Then people like hit 70" -> "Then people like me hit 70"

So what are the problems a transplant will face on a new server? Will there be a decently sized population there soon? Also, does anyone have a list of the ACTUAL locations of the servers, not just their timezones? I used to have one but I can't find it.

What a waste, we have Ghost town servers yet they open another one and all the rush for firsts who need their epeen stroked will rush to it, get to 70 or whatever then bitch for another new server as it becomes a Ghost town too.

I'm not a fan of the transfer business, for the same reasons as Chris Anthony.
I'd love a brand new "from scratch" server, without the hassles of trying to level amidst an already well founded group of high levels, who aren't exactly willing to hang out with the new kids on the block.
For an MMO, WoW certainly requires a lot of alone time.

Agreed, Bliz needs to merge ghost-town realms into "Medium" populations realms, and then not allow char transfers to New realms. So far their reasons for not merging realms have been... unsatisfactory.

"LEEERROOOOYYY JEEEEENKIIIIIINS"
I just lol'ed.
Jasperwind Feb 1st 2008 9:25AM
Yeah, and Dalaran-US too. We have 100+ queues with 5+ minute waits a lot of nights.
Indhi Feb 1st 2008 3:07AM
Wow... I really hate to disappoint you here, but Ghostlands is far from new - it came out when BC was released. I know this because I have two 70's on it currently. Perhaps he's trying to redefine "new". Either way, Ghostlands isn't new, and it's pretty close to capacity. We have a very healthy community here, a couple of transfers probably isn't going to affect us much :)
Indhi Feb 1st 2008 3:14AM
That'll teach me to read things at 7am. Please disregard my previous comment. I always forgot to consider the "EU" part.
Teri Feb 1st 2008 4:54AM
Hope this clears up the queues on my server a bit (Argent Dawn US), we've been high pop-full for a long time. Queues started becoming an issue during the holiday season, and they still remain at peak times today.
