2.4 lifts diminishing returns on honor
According to Drysc, 2.4 will fix one of the biggest issues causing minimal honor gain for losing teams in Battlegrounds, namely Diminishing Returns. As things stand currently, according to Drysc, "What diminishing returns mean for honor is that each subsequent kill of the same target will reward you with less and less honor; 10% less per kill to be exact. One of the major downsides to diminishing returns is that the calculations, for potentially hundreds of thousands of players, is too intense to do real time, so they are calculated during off-peak hours. This in turn requires that the honor you gain be temporarily displayed as "estimated" until the calculations are run. It's a system that we've certainly improved (moving the calculation from weekly to daily) but still always disliked. It creates a very uninteresting and sometimes aggravating or confusing detachment from your achievements and the actual reward."
I can't say I disagree with him on that score, I hate waiting till the next day rolls around. It's interesting to me to see that Blizzard always disliked it, too, as I would not have guessed that to be the case.
Drysc goes on to further point out that the original reason for DR on honor was to prevent exploitation of the system that is no longer a real problem, what with battlegrounds providing a more reasonable reward for effort as far as honor is concerned compared to trying to exploit by corpse camping or otherwise killing the same mob over and over. The new system still only allows you to kill a single target so often, though: after 50 deaths, a player in a BG is worth no more honor until that BG is over. Better still, with the new system, honor gain will be instant. No more waiting for tomorrow, you get your honor as soon as you make a kill and can spend it as soon as you're done.
Thanks to World of Raids and our tipsters for the heads up.

Congrats to all camping griefers.
Arabelli Feb 1st 2008 1:54PM
Griefers aren't in it for the honor to begin with. See also John Gabriel's Greater Internet F@#wad Theory. But not having to estimate honor anymore? Hot.

Is there just a large group of people who compete to see who can make the first negative comment on an given WoWInsider article?
"Oh man I so pwned that blogger by pointing out a spelling error!" "Dood I ttly Rocked by QQing all over that post!"
Griefers are not killing people over and over for honor, they're doing it to wave their e-peen around. They'd be doing it even if they didn't earn any honor from it.

You above guys are not completely correct. Every twink farms honor in WSG by camping the GY for awhile. They stop roughly around the time the honor kills no longer count.
The BGs are going to become more of a bloodletting fest then ever before. WSG and AB in particular may see team efforts to win go out the window.
This will lead to more camping the GY, and assorted other friendly ways of saying hello to the opposition.
Amphitere Feb 1st 2008 1:54PM
@1 My thoughts exactly. I'll never play WSG again when this goes live.
Spoony Feb 1st 2008 2:43PM
well considering that Blizzard says they know something is wrong with WSG i think they will probably be releasing a lot of new fixes for the battlegrounds so that graveyard camping doesn't become profitable again.
jbodar Feb 1st 2008 6:08PM
Why don't they just give everyone the "Honorless Target" buff when you rez at the GY? Then all GY camping does is waste time.

YES!

WSG has dropped to the deepest levels of Hell with this.

WSG is the deepest levels of Hell.
Fixed

The main thing I love about this is the instantly earning honour thing, instead of having to wait for the calculations at honour reset and spending it the next day.
I also like that they still don't want to encourage HK farming through the 50 deaths in a BG rule.
Love these changes.
Tech Feb 1st 2008 2:11PM
This is very good news to me!!!
More honor per BG and not having to wait until the next day to see how much honor I actually have received.
Way to go Blizzard!!!!

There's a fundamental flaw in PvP, in that you get rewarded for failure. That's the cause of this whole "welfare" epic problem. Anybody can spot a nice piece of S1 gear, join a battleground, lose a few dozen times, and then grab themselves a shiny new sword or helm. If you lose in PvE all you get is a repair bill. With some of the S1 gear being better for PvE than some raid gear combined with the reward for losing, who wouldn't queue for BGs with no care to whether or not you win?
While removing diminishing returns is good news for dedicated PvPers, the increased reward for people that don't care about winning is bad news for them. The losing side should be getting less reward, not more.
And I say all this as a person who doesn't like PvP but queued up when he discovered S1 gear is nearly unmatched for druid tanking. (But I do try to do my best.)
(And for crying out loud fix druid itemization!)

Finally I can spend my honor the day I get it.
Now I just need to get 2.4...
bloodlight Feb 1st 2008 3:57PM
of course the real solution is to kill the whole "honor" concept all together since it really serves no purpose. Give marks to those who win, nothing to those who loose and be done with it. Gear cost x-marks to purchase. special gear like S1 and the like should take marks from multiple BG's.

OMG
While it a step in the right direction, they need to fix some other stuff before they can make it work.
This is gonna make WSG even more of a nightmare. EoTS and AB won't be as annoying but its gonna make the games drag out longer.
On the upside, it will make farming for honor the fastest in WSG, the games will never end but it will be a honor-cash cow.
Verit Feb 1st 2008 3:04PM
Except after 50 kills on that player = no more honor at all...
guesswho? Feb 1st 2008 2:33PM
in before raider "welfare epix" QQ.
Ken Feb 1st 2008 2:59PM
Actually, you missed it by a few. Look up at #10.
theRaptor Feb 1st 2008 7:29PM
It isn't just raiders, welfare epix devalue the work of people who don't fail at arena.
