The Lunar Festival begins today in Azeroth
This annual in-game holiday is scheduled to coincide with real life Chinese New Years. Asian style outfits, ceremonial fireworks, delicious dumplings and a once-a-year raid boss are all part of the celebration. Quests send you to find 50 coins and turn them in for various goodies as well. It's a fun RP event taking place across player cities throughout Azeroth, but mostly centered in the Druid village of Moonglade.
The real question this year is if this holiday is going to upgrade the event like they did for Hallow's End. Will there be fireworks in Shattrath? Elders in Arcatraz? Revelers in Zul'Aman? Shouldn't a major celebration like this have Omen dropping some welfare epics, too? Recently they promised an older holiday would get a make over. Is this the one? We'll have until February 23 to find out.

My brother was on his server and watched Omen get owned but I don't think he dropped any loot.

of note is that the quests have been reset, everyone can collect all 50 coins again. Neat for those who changed professions and want to have as an example the BoP engineering plans :)

Also of note is the +3,750 rep that you get to all Horde or Alliance factions for (re-)visiting all the Elders.

Not a single sign of celebration in Cenarion Refuge in Zangamarsh.
My only theory: They forgot about it.

Turns out Elune has a baby shower to attend, she's hoping you can celebrate one of the larger mushrooms instead.

Each year i can't help but run around the world to get a dress for each of my new female characters above level 5... It takes some time !

There are already comments made on WoWHead with people killing Omen within the last few hours/days. No mention of loot and nothing on the loot table. At least with the Horseman, Bliz let us know there was going to be loot and we needed to do him prior to the event.
With how quiet this was brought in, I doubt there is anything secret going on to be discovered.

GTFO of my nighthaven.
Urthona Feb 5th 2008 10:42AM
Yeah, it's Nighthaven, in the zone of Moonglade.

There is nothing new for this holiday... was expected since there was no patch testing or mention with the Xmas changes (2.3).
Only one thing different this year... its reset the quests for my main, which did it 1st year, but couldnt 2nd year due to failure to reset.

Watched (I can't call it 'helped,' 2 weak CoA's certainly didn't turn the tde) Omen go down on Dalaran about a half hour ago; that was entertaining.

Watched a Hunter and a Druid kite Omen around Moonglade on Bloodscalp...the NPCs were getting WTFPWND by Omen when they attacked him, lol.

Hallow's End 5-man boss was a nice addition, dropping epics was a nice perk (the ilevel was reasonable, ie. bosses in heroic 5-mans), but Blizz indirectly set an annoying precedent: players expect them now. Holidays were never about epic rewards, you got a pet or a dress or set of funny shoulders, and it was fine that way.

Beerfest gave us the opportunity to get a mount. Harvest Festival gives an item that supplies a player with a stack of food/water that scales with level. Summer Solstice sends us into major 60 dungeons for a unique pet.
We don't need epic loot to be happy, we need the event to give us something substantial —or failing that, have an event of such magnitude that you feel you NEED to take part in it.
Ideally, there should be a Gettysburg style reenactment of the Opening of Ahn'Qiraj. Yearly, on realms that have had it open.
What if a holiday event completion gave the use of a new spell, on a 12 hour cooldown? Like the quest giver gives you a book that teaches a 3 sec stun to all classes.
What if holiday completion opened something substantially cosmetic to each class? Hunters get a new stable slot. Warlocks get a green fire animation. Druids get a stag travel form animation.
What if holiday completion gave a zone wide buff to increase damage or reputation? Or better yet, holiday quests increased reputations across the board.

Some nice ideas. The stun would be too much, for PvP especially. But I'm all for the idea of a portal spell as a reward (like what the druids have for Moonglade) on a 12h cooldown for example.

I really like the idea of a portal opening.
I would really like something epic like that to happen again. There was so much hype and video's being posted about it, that being there made it a defining part of my characters position on the server.
And I'm not talking about like BC opening or Woltk or something. I want something server wide to happen again where people have to come together to meet a common goal.
That was really one of the best events I have ever seen this game perform.

"I want something server wide to happen again where people have to come together to meet a common goal."
You'll get some of this when the Sunwell Isle content goes live. Everyone needs to work together doing daily quests to fully reveal all the content and make it all available.

Without adding epics, they still could have added some coolness to the lunar festival, something like they did with Brewfest. Like, collect all 50 coins + kill Omen + fire off a hundred fireworks, get a reward comparable to the Brewfest Ram or Brewfest Goggles. I feel those were/are interesting rewards, while they don't change the game balance.
Jason Feb 6th 2008 4:36PM
I tanked Omen FTW. Quest reward was a BOP thing that if use use with solid stone, you can create a spotlight for 3 minutes. This item has a 24 hour cooldown. Also I got a crate of fireworks and around 11g.
