Tickets, Please: A look at Darkmoon Faire's ticket reward system
It's the first full week of the month, and among other things, that means that the Darkmoon Faire is in town -- That town being Shattrath City, at least for February. We've said a few things about the Faire in the past, but I'd like to get into the meat of the thing, so you can figure out how to get all you can out of Silas and his merry band before they head out for another month, or at least start your preparations for their next gig in Elwynn Forest. This time, I'd like to talk about the ticket system, that lovely process whereby Gelvas Grimegate turns Darkmoon Faire Prize Tickets into loot. Fellow blogger Robin Torres posted a good introduction to the system a few months back, but I'd like to expand it a bit and see what we can find out about how it works and why -- or if -- you should take advantage of it.Check it out after the jump!
Why grind tickets, you ask? The two "big ticket" items, costing 1200 each, The Orb and Amulet of the Darkmoon, have admittedly lost a bit of their luster these days. They were incredibly nice back when Darkmoon Faire was new, mind you. As a feral druid, I wore my amulet with pride for months, right up until I found a new necklace in Hellfire Peninsula in the first few weeks of the Burning Crusade! These days, that means you'll sadly probably find a better necklace somewhere in Outland long before you save up 1200 tickets. While we can hope for new holiday upgrades, for now the ticket system could use a bit of new life. That said, there's still reasons to gather tickets.
First, there's still some loot to be had. For 5 tickets, 12 tickets, or 40 tickets, you can grab yourself a Darkmoon Prize, which will contain trade skill supplies, a recipe, a green item, or even a blue item. It's, at the least, a nice way to satisfy the gambler in you as you level up. If you're an engineer, you'll want to grab the schematic for the Steam Tonk Controller so you can hold Steam Tonk matches while waiting for those last few stragglers to show up for a raid or for your arena queue to pop, and 40 tickets aren't too hard to get. Finally, bag space is often a struggle for the leveling (or non-leveling) character, so an easy to get 14-slot bag such as the Darkmoon Storage Box could be -- excuse the pun -- just the ticket! While the box is unique, so you can only get one, it's still trade-able, so if you ever find yourself no longer in need of it, you can pass it on to one of your other characters, or a deserving newbie you know. Of course, if all that fails, you should never underestimate the comedy or role play potential of waving around a haunch of mutton or two, if you can equip maces. In fact, I'd say that allowing your warrior or rogue to swing around two flaming pieces of meat might be the best possible use of 2 Essences of Fire and 8 Small Radiant Shards ever conceived.
The second reason is that it can provide great synergy with leveling up of trade skills. It seems like every trade skill has those points where you need to make the same item over and over to level up, but you just can't seem to find anyone to buy your wares other than your friendly neighborhood general goods vendor. That's where, if you're a leatherworker, blacksmith, or engineer, the Darkmoon Faire comes in to play. I recall that when I was leveling up my engineer, I made more than my fair share of Thorium Widgets on the way to 315 skill, and being able to send those widgets over to my druid to help him get his amulet was a great way to dispose of them when they didn't sell very well on the auction house. Likewise, my leatherworker spent a lot of time skilling up on Rugged Armor Kits, and Chronos took those from me for even more tickets. Check out WoWWiki's Darkmoon Faire ticket guide for a good, concise list of the various turn-in quests, and to figure out which trade skill items you can make.
The third reason is that you can also use the gathering of various animal parts for Yebb Neblegear to help you decide where to level up. For example, the famous Jame's alliance leveling guide suggests heading to Thousand Needles when hit level 30 and gathering Vibrant Plumes off the Harpies there, 25 of them to get enough tickets for the aforementioned storage box. You might also look for them on the various Moonkin of the Hinterlands and Winterspring, or on other groups of Harpies like the ones up in northern Feralas. I'm personally a fan of leveling up in Desolace and the Badlands, so I often get Soft Bushy Tails for him. When I'm leveling Horde-side, I always seem to end up helping the Warsong clan in Ashenvale and the Royal Apothecary Society in Hillsbrad, so that always give me a good excuse to collect Torn Bear Pelts as well.
The last reason is a bit more simplistic: You just like seeing that green reputation bar inch on up. Sure, it takes a few (thousand) widgets and armor kits, but hey, if it means rock bottom prices on Cheap Beer and Darkmoon Special Reserve, it's got to be worth it, right?
By the by, for all you less than level 58 types out there who are a bit bummed that the Faire's in Shattrath, don't give up quite yet. You can't head directly through the Dark Portal for sure, but if you can hire a Mage, they can still portal you directly to the city, and from there, it's a very quick trip outside, down through the lower city and out the southeastern tunnel. Plus, you can go to one of the city's Inns on the Scryer or Aldor tiers and set your home to the city, and have an instant portal to any other capital via A'dal's room.

Nice article. :) I have to point out that the Tonk schematic is available elsewhere, specifically the Orgrimmar and Ironforge Engineering Supplies vendors. It is in limited supply, though, so if it's becoming a pain to get it from them, looking into the Darkmoon Faire might be a better alternative than caving in to jacked up AH prices.

There is absolutely no reason to waste time grinding anything at ALL for darkmoon faire anymore.
14-slot bag? You can get a 16-slot on the AH for 5g. Maybe less depending on how the competition is trying to dump prices and who's leveling their tailoring today.
Can you really grind enough tickets faster than you can grind out 5g?
the darkmoon faire exists only to turn in your darkmoon cards at the moment and maybe snag a cheap gem or fel lotus from the limited time vendors.
They really really really need to overhaul the system, re-work the top tier items and make things in outland drop ticket-able items, and integrate more new tradeskill items.... and more tradeskills.
Honestly, the Darkmoon Faire in general is yet another "We got a really good start, but kinda half-assed it and left it sitting around forever" ideas. Their idea of "fixing" it the last time just meant adding new junk to the vendors (ooh) and a whole 4 more darkmooon cards.
*yawn*

Shh. We have to be supportive. It won't do the new guy's ego any favours to let him know he failed hard twice in a row. >_>

Or, you know Dave, the Dark Moon Faire can also be about fun.
It's an important part of the game ;)
G Feb 6th 2008 9:01PM
What is this "fun" you speak of? WoW is all about spreadsheets and reporting in on time, and don't you forget it!
;)
fLUx Feb 6th 2008 8:59PM
Only reason I like the darkmoon faire is because I can camp all day for the limited items! Sadly I've been at the faire all day on my 2nd screen and I've seen maybe 20 people come and go, if that's a sign nobody has a reason to visit, I don't know what is! :(
Oh and I got the Twisting Nether card, 10% chance to self res, that's a nice thing to have! ;)
Major overhaul needed, its equipment you can gain is rubbish, even for the required level....
Dave Feb 6th 2008 9:07PM
If "fun" is a mindlessly repetitive grind for absolutely no reward, I'm absolutely against your brand of fun, sorry.
Everything's fun I guess if you don't think about it long enough to realize you're wasting your time and that you could get something more meaningful by spending the time that you're paying for in a different way.
MWWings Feb 6th 2008 9:40PM
Fun is getting smashed at the fair and racing tonks and getting shot from a cannon! It adds flavor, life, and zest to the game.
"More meaningful?" What in all the World of Warcraft could be more meaningful than running around the fair like dorks with my friends?
Aerei Feb 6th 2008 10:28PM
This is all about grinding for tickets, though, not just goofing off at the Faire. >_>
SaintStryfe Feb 6th 2008 10:02PM
I got a ton of Scorpid Blood saved up, it stopped giving rep at about 2000/6000... I'm told I have to trade in card decks or do Sayge's quests, which are random, to level further.
Way to make me give not a crap less about a grind. I'm always up for one, but that makes me not care.

I would like to see the Faire become a more interesting pvp duel (just duel or deathmatches by choice) zone, with either a "safe" path to the Faire itself, or better, FP's for each Faire's duration. Darkmoon Faire tickets and honour points for the winners!
Envision a section of the Faire set up with tiered stand/s (complete with ice-cream, ravager dog and ale etc vendors!) where other players could sit (please, make them "sittable") and cheer /jeer, surrounding a battle arena (ie, like a circus big-top, but without the tent over it all)... and more /emotes for drinking and general carousing! Maybe a drunken "I love you Maaate" for the Aussies. But please, immediate ejection from the Faire for /spitting! It's disgusting!

I really wish there was a way to get the darkmoon faire tabard. It's one of the best in the game.
Wiggie Feb 7th 2008 3:24AM
Why bother grinding tickets for the tonk schematic when you can now buy it elsewhere?
Before this, there was only a handful of people selling tonks and they were making good money (like me) now every Tom Dick & Harry are seliing them.
Because of this the price of tonks on my server have dropped from 30G to 3G.

I really hope they make something useful for level 70s to turn tickets in for (or perhaps level 80s in WotLK). I was working really hard for one of those necklaces pre BC, and worked up about 900 some tickets (that's 5 bank slots), and now they just kind of sit around. It makes me kinda sad really, and I just can't bring myself to throw them away just yet, always hopeful that they'll be of use in time. Alternatively, making Darkmoon rep more useful would be a welcomed change, maybe a tabard at exalted.
Also, don't forget your Jublings! Perhaps one of the best things to come out of the fair, for a pet collector it's a must! :)
Digitalhawkeye Feb 7th 2008 4:54AM
I almost forgot, I was thrilled to get my Darkmoon Card: Heroism, but now this card is pretty much useless, and there's no level 70 equivalent. I know there are still people out there, few as they may be, without BC who might desire a deck at level 60, but at least they could give us a way to upgrade our cards at 70 or something.
Also, with the lag in Shatt, take off your armor before trying out the new canon location, there are a lot of skeletons down around the Daily dungeon guys to attest to how many people the lag gets. :P
Blake Feb 7th 2008 10:40AM
Finally someone figures out what the faire is for...JUBJUB. With my reputation maxed out from regular turnins, I'm not going to grind decks and the tickets are worthless post 60. Hopefully it will get an upgrade in WotLK.
The only reason I've been to the faire in the past few months is to get the Tree Frog, Wood Frog & Jubling.
Algorython Feb 7th 2008 11:22AM
Dual-wielding flaming muttons FTW. I might actually have to consider doing that on my fury warrior.
