Blizzard says "WTB Fiction Writers"
We like to keep you updated on the opportunities to make some money off of all that WoW experience you have, so when we saw an announcement on the Blizzard job postings site that they're looking for fiction writers, we had to let you know. Not too often do people get a chance to write for their favorite game making company. The announcement says that if you get this job, you'll be working with their intellectual property (read: writing cool stories about all your favorite Blizzard characters), do lots of creative writing, and work on story development. And what sets this announcement apart are two little gems from the "Pluses" category of the announcement: "Experience creating and running pen and paper RPG campaigns and/or live-action RPGs" and "Experience in playing massively multiplayer online role-playing games, especially World of Warcraft."
So get out your 10 sided die and roll a 9 or above to work for Blizzard. Well, that and a bit of those uber-writing skillz. And who knows? Maybe one day you'll be writing a story about the Rise of the Lich King.
Good luck!

R.A. Salvatore

RA Salvatore is currently working for 38 Studios (the Curt Shilling game company). They're working on getting a MMORPG out in 2010 called Copernicus.
So I think it'd be a tad unlikely he'd join up with Blizzard...but we can all dream.
RA Salvatore + World of Warcraft = Decades of good entertainment.
censorman Feb 8th 2008 11:26AM
You're kidding right? Salvatore's fiction is on par with the rest of the hacks who churn out the WC novels.
Baaaad.
There are writers like RR Martin who are lifting fantasy from the laughable standards Salvatore, Goodkind, and other grade school talents set.
Then again, WoW and original, interesting fiction....yeah....not quite. Fun game, but come on. Chuck Norris is brought up for a reason. Pop culture references perpetually destroy the shallow immersion WoW provides.
That said, if I wanted to play a game with a riveting plot, interesting characters, and wildly creative environs, I'd table top it.

Poor Censorman. Show us on the doll where the bad writers touched you...

Blizz running out of lore?
outforprophets Feb 8th 2008 3:49AM
I'm guessing dungeon story lines/story arcs - ie reasons you're in it, NPC speech, etc.

"Experience creating and running pen and paper RPG campaigns and/or live-action RPGs"
"Experience in playing massively multiplayer online role-playing games, especially World of Warcraft."
I would guess that they're either looking for people to work on upcoming RPG sourcebooks, story sections for the website, or just need more people to write quest and event dialogue.
If it were something like writing novels, I doubt they'd have an open job listing.
What's wrong with hiring new writers, anyway?

The posting ALSO points out that they're looking for professional writers with an established history of publication. That won't stop the fanfic and amateur-fiction crowd from burying Blizzard's HR department under a mountain of applications, but....

Dude this is for Blizzard to expand their lore, as in the future of Warcraft. Anyway this would be cool but matt i'm rather busy with school. Anyway I so plan to start a episodic web novel (thats what im gonna call it) about my WoW main and various alts. Since i plan to include a combination of RP/lore and the actualities of the Wow game world, I hope to make it more than fan fiction. LOL
Anyway this is a really cool job listing.
Sean Riley Feb 7th 2008 9:57PM
Damn. I meet all their criteria.
Now I need to decide if I want to try and apply for this (despite living in Sydney, Australia) or opt out for other things.
Aerei Feb 8th 2008 3:52AM
Go for it! If you get it, it's one of those things that can truly be called an opportunity of a lifetime. If you don't, then you move on and don't worry about it. ;)

She pessimist in me is always forced to wonder- why do they now need some writers? Did the other ones quit because of crappy working conditions/pay? Maybe they paid the existing writers TOO much, and they left to retire and just play WoW, or maybe they're just trying to write tons more lore-- we may never know i suppose.

THE pessimist*
Calaana Feb 8th 2008 12:42AM
Maybe they can just plain afford to employ more, which would increase production, then sales, and then more employment? :)

You guys spelled "dice" wrong. You wrote "die".
Soulkill Feb 8th 2008 2:26AM
Dice (the plural of die), question is did they mean one die or two dice.
Magnetite2 Feb 8th 2008 6:52AM
It's actually rather nice to see that some are literate enough to know that the singular of dice is die :)
Anywho, what a great opportunity - and not one that comes up very often I would imagine!
Arturis Feb 8th 2008 12:34PM
Since he said you need to "roll a 9 or above", I would assume he meant rolling a single 10 sided die, and not multiple 10 sided dice. Thus the spelling of "die" is correct.

Man, I love the Warcraft lore. I find myself reading up about i nearly every day. I also love writing, and while it'd be a dream job, I feel I'm underqualified. =\
