Birds of prey: Is Druid epic flight form OP in PvP

As it turns out Zebulon had a run-in with a shifter who really knew how to use his class abilities. As he was flying back from Skettis daily questing high above Terorkkar Forest, Zebulon, who was playing a Rogue, was ambushed by a Druid in Swift Flight Form. The attacker flew above him and shifted into caster form. The Druid cast Insect Swarm and began spamming Moonfire as he dropped toward the ground. The altitude permitted the Druid to break combat and return to flight form. Because of the speed boost from epic flight form the Druid was able to make another pass. Damaged, dotted, and desperate, Zebulon searched for a safe body of water to drop into. The plan was to dismount into the water, Cloak of Shadows, and then Vanish from the attacker. No luck- HK for the Druid.
My concern is not for my friend. Zebulon is a mean, nasty ganker. He certainly got what he deserved. The real issue is that Druids are the only characters that are viable in aerial combat. This is because flight form is an instant cast. Mages may be able to drop an instant spell or two and then Blink safely to the ground. They would not be able to reengage the target because the casting time for the flying mount is three seconds and can't be done while falling.
What do you think? Is this a terrain exploit? If it's unfair, how could it be resolved?

Druids, overpowered? Surely you jest, sir.
Zeplar Feb 9th 2008 5:10PM
Jesus, how high up was he that the druid could go out of combat before hitting the ground?
Patrick Feb 9th 2008 5:15PM
Seriously, and how could he have been in range at that altitude? Parachute Cloak maybe?
Sean Feb 9th 2008 5:12PM
And this is different from a Rogue popping out of Stealth, stunlocking his prey, using Cloak of Shadows to shed DOTs, and hitting Vanish to escape if needed?
We all have different talents, learn to live with it.

I'd love to see you do that in midair.

kidding right? find a new game, imo, if this seriously brings him heartache.

+10 for a Star Trek reference! =)

1. Who actually flies so high that people can drop combat when falling from you.
and
2. Why is a WoWInsider editor giving this idiot a platform to cry from?

If you read her correctly, she said it was not her who thought of this; her friend Zeb brought it up.
Is it OP? Not really in my opinion. Every class has its buffs and nerfs. However, it's something that I've never thought of before and something Blizzard should look into [in the future]. I sure know I'm not going to be flagged and flying very high anytime soon :D

It's been in the game since the start of BC. Honestly, you're more likely to die from a mage doing the ole' Slow Fall -> pom pyro -> fire blast -> blast wave.

Snooze, classes that can pick their fights to any degree have a huge advantage in world pvp ... hunters, rouges, druids.

Shush.

who really cares? Cry me a river, if he was pvp then he took the risk of dying and the druid had to actually try to pull that off, nobody di it for him so no, druids aren't op

Quite frankly, this is one of two things. Either your friend is feeding you a line or you are creating stories from thin air. I play a druid and I have tried pulling off the aerial combat stunts like you just described and getting more then one spell off is near impossible due to the speed at which you drop. Druids are not mages with their slowfall ability.
Let me detail why I think this is complete horseshit...
1) Range on Insect swarm and moonfire is at best 36 yard talented. You will at most get 1 cast of IS and 1 cast of MF before you drop out of range. It is highly unlikely that the druid would be able to cast both unless his timing was absolutely perfect due to the speed at which you fall.
2) Assuming the druid is a nicely geared balance druid with 1k+ spell damage the IS will do roughly 2100-2200 damage over 12 seconds, and the moonfire will do 2000- 2500 damage, perhaps a it more if he crits. At most that is 4100 to maybe 5k damage over 12 seconds.
3) You average rogue has 8 to 9k hp, with the well geared pvp rogues have around 10k or more. The rogue in question will still have at least half his life left and 12 seconds to land.
Either your friend is full of it or there is some important information that you friend is not telling us.

Priests can also do aerial combat if they're flying low to the ground:
Dismount, shadow word pain, shadow word death, levitate, renew (to cancel out SWD damage), mount, repeat.
Aerial PvP happens so infrequently that it's not really worth crying about. Besides, it's easy to avoid if you know where to fly to.

Wow, sounds fancy. If the druid was able to full off something that crazy, then he deserved to gank your friend. I don't think that's OP at all, I'd actually call that skill.
Vellesta Feb 9th 2008 5:57PM
That druid is my hero. Too bad you have to be a moonkin to pull this stunt off. >_>

This comment is full of epic and win.

I don't have a druid as a main or as an alt but even I must admit that it is not OP but rather excellent 1337 skillz.
I am guessing the druid used a Parachute cloak or more likely the skyguard drape, which is a revered reward with the skywing.
@14, yeah it fits into lore very well, that attack was almost like a bird of prey swooping in from above.
