When you arrive there, everyone does give those pieces of advice, so I arrived there with my priest with no problem. It's fun to see all those rogues, hunters and mages leveling to see if they can cross the water - as if it'd make any difference to level.
A piece of advice: the health you lose on fatigation (or falling or drowning, it's the same system) is from PERCENTAGE - so it's doesnt matter if you are level 1 or level 70, you'll loose the "same" amount of health from those. So, if you are starting a new player, go as level 1, don't buy anything, don't care about armor, don't fortitude yourself. In fact, fortitude will just drain MORE health that you can heal on level 2, so it's just useless.
PS - There are no restricted areas... in fact that are a lot on non-developed or just bugged areas (it's a direct answer to Meira above :P). I know that by just running wow "emulated" version at home. Believe me, there is no fun at all.
