Two bosses enter... but only one will get to leave in WoW Insider's series of fantasy deathmatches. We've scoured the instances of Azeroth and Outland looking for the most interesting bosses Blizzard has to offer us and picked out a group of 32 to pit against one another until we come out with a single winner in the end. And the best part -- you get to tell us who wins.
Today we're continuing our showdown between the final eight with a fight between
Kel'Thuzad, the final boss in Naxxramas, and
Ragnaros, the fiery raid target of Molten Core. Want to learn more about these two bosses and voice your opinion on who would win in a fight? Keep reading!
Ragnaros the Firelord was once a servant of the Old Gods, but at present he rules over the heart of Blackrock Mountain and answers to no one -- save a mini-raid of level 70s. Knowing he is a fire elemental, it's no surprise that Ragnaros takes down his opponents with massive fire damage. In battle, Ragnaros will use the following skills:
- Wrath of Ragnaros: a melee-range knockback.
- Hammer of Ragnaros: selects a random target at range and knocks everyone in the vicinity back.
- Elemental Fire: A high-damage fire DoT that Ragnaros puts on whomever has aggro.
- Magma Blast: If no one is in melee range, Ragnaros will do a high-damage physical attack -- enough to wipe your standard player raid.
The
Lich Lord Kel'Thuzad rules over the Plaguelands from his citadel Naxxramas. While in his floating fortress, the fight begins with the raid taking out several adds, we're just considering the bosses themselves, so we'll start by talking about what would normally be considered phase 2 of this encounter, when you first get to fight Kel'thuzad himself.
Kel'Thuzad does frost and shadow damage with:
- single-target and multi-target frostbolts,
- the ability to mind-control up to 4 targets,
- the ability to create a shadow fissure, causing massive shadow damage to anyone in its radius,
- a frost blast that immobilizes and damages its target (100% of its health),
- a mana detonation which causes causes mana users to explode, dealing damage to all of those around them.
Now, before we get to our vote, I want to be clear that we're considering these two bosses to have similar health, level, and damage capacity. We're trying to put them on an even playing field, instead of just presuming Kel'Thuzad would win because he's in the higher level dungeon. But bearing that in mind, tell us who you think would come out ahead if these two bosses met -- and why.

Kel'thuzad, no contest. Here's how it would go.
Kel'thuzad casts Mind control.
Kel'thuzad creates Shadow fissure.
*Kel'thuzad moves Rag on top or the same place as the fissure*
Kel'thuzad releases Rag and then Casts Frost Nova.
Ragnoras Dies.
Lucas Feb 10th 2008 9:16PM
Rag can't move...
Slayyerr Feb 20th 2008 9:59PM
Undead don't fight fair, he'd just call for backup and Arthas would strut down from his frozen throne and bang ragnaros the fuck out.
Az Fish Feb 10th 2008 10:06PM
I have never done a pre-BC raid so I haven't fought either of these two. But i've heard plenty of stories. I'd say Ragnaros would win, fire > ice.
Sky_Paladin Feb 10th 2008 9:25PM
Shadow fissure, Rag can't escape.
End.
Xiomburg Feb 10th 2008 9:26PM
Then if Rag cant move, then he would be disqualified because he cant make it there.
Tereth Feb 10th 2008 9:26PM
Rag is an ELEMENTAL GOD. Now, I know it's about abilities and whatnot, but... Should a guy who died and got rezzed my Arthas be able to kill the elemental god of fire? Nope. Plus, fire melts Ice. GG
Balasan Feb 11th 2008 4:58AM
Rag is no more a god than kelthuzad is.
He's merely a liutenant of the elemental gods, the right wing man, etc etc.
Having said that, him not being able to move will kill him.
Lucas Feb 11th 2008 6:03AM
Isn't his most powerful attack when theres no one in melee range? What?
Erika Feb 10th 2008 9:29PM
Thats also saying that he doesn't get knocked back to far and Rag does his magma blast. But i think Kel Wins this one.
Gary Feb 10th 2008 9:32PM
Come on, Raggie's made of fire and Kel's a boney piece of ice.
A Man In Black Feb 10th 2008 9:45PM
Both of them have a "Don't do this or you DIE" mechanic (don't stand in the fissure, stay in melee). Presumably, neither will do this.
Thus, you have a boss that scatters lots of nasty debuffs of the sort that raid bosses tend to be immune to, and a boss that beats the living bejeesus out of one single target in melee range.
Not really much of a fight, assuming Shadow Fissure and Magma Blast aren't assumed to be instant I-win buttons.
Ametrine Feb 10th 2008 9:51PM
Can a created being ever truly defeat a GOD?
Nope.
Ragnaros FTW.
Abhinav Kumar Feb 10th 2008 9:52PM
Rag is an ELEMENTAL GOD! He would own kel. God damn blizzard for making him the first raid boss and ruining the lore.
Asswipe Johnson Feb 11th 2008 3:06AM
Oh well, Metzen and the rest of the Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight have made a mess of the lore so many times over that they should call it World of Retconcraft.
Matdredalia Feb 11th 2008 6:43AM
He's not a God. He's a servant of the Gods. Big, big difference.
Abhinav Kumar Feb 11th 2008 12:37PM
No he himself is considered an "elemental" god. Yes the Old Gods are actual gods but he is also considered one from what i understand.
Thunderz Feb 10th 2008 9:56PM
EVEN if rag cant move he can still attack Kel with his Magna Blast and thats high damage... so GG kel
cvpuck Feb 10th 2008 9:57PM
Hes not a God.. hes a General of an Old Gods army.. one of the elemental generals... anyway.. im going with Ice trumps fire. Kel could one shot the sons, and jus frostbolt down rag in a few minutes.
The Rossinator Feb 10th 2008 10:18PM
Raggy is not a god he was made by an Old God ,he is an elemental lieutenant he's just more powerful because he absorbed thunderaan (another elemental lieutenant).
But still Raggy FTW
