I think that back when Blizzard was developing what was going to become Warcraft, they approached the owners for the Warhammer IP (their name escapes me atm), asking if they could license the Warhammer universe for their new game. The request was declined, so Blizzard came up with their own universe for Warcraft (which some people argue is very, very similar to Warhammer, but that is beside the point).
I've also heard that Starcraft is very similar to Warhammer 4000, but I've never done anything with Warhammer in any way, shape or form, so I'm not positive on that.
