Fishing in 2.4: Daily quests and more
One of the first things I checked out on the PTR was the new fishing daily quests. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I actually enjoy fishing in WoW and have been increasingly interested in this quest ever since it came to my attention via the official forums. Now that the 2.4 test realm has been up for a few days, I've been able to do three of the new, randomly rotating quests which start from Old Man Barlo just outside of Shattrath City. The first quest I discovered, and the one that I've seen the most so far, is called "Shrimpin' Ain't Easy". It requires you to fly to Zangarmarsh and fish up a few Bloated Barbed Gill Trout. You can catch these by fishing in any of the lakes in the zone. Once you reel one in, you can open it like any other package in the game to collect a few shrimp and gray items. One fish can hold multiple shrimp and this quest can be completed pretty quickly, assuming that you don't encounter any bugs. Currently, I often encounter a bug where I'm unable to catch any fish (aside from the special fishing pools, which don't yield the quest fish) in Zangarmarsh while on this quest. Abandoning and retaking it has fixed the problem every time so far.
"Bait Bandits" is the next quest I found. It requires you to fish up the elusive Blackfin Darter in any of Terokkar Forest's rivers. For this quest you only need to catch one of the quest items, so as you might expect, it has a relatively low drop rate. While the quest text can be a little confusing since it seems to give you special instructions on how to catch this fish, you don't need to do anything special. Old Man Barlo's instructions merely seem to be there to add flavor to the quest, and you don't really need to "pull your line at the last possible second", at least as far as I could tell.
The third quest, "The One That Got Away", takes us to Nagrand. This one is similar to the Terokkar quest in that you only have to catch one unique fish. In this case, you need to throw your line in one of the zone's lakes until you are able to land the World's Largest Mudfish. While I got him on my fifth cast, others in the zone were complaining about the drop rate.
Two more quests are currently appearing on Wowhead, although I have not seen them on either of the US PTRs, so I can't provide any more information than what is currently listed on that site. "Felblood Fillet" will apparently take us to Shadowmoon Valley or Hellfire Peninsula in search of a Monstrous Felblood Snapper. The other quest, "Crockolisks in the City" will send us to either Orgrimmar or Stormwind to catch a Baby Crockolisk.
In reward for your daily efforts on these quests, you're given a Bag of Fishing Treasures. This little cache always contains some gold in addition to various other rewards. Personally, I've only found gray items (that sell for a couple gold) and Sharpened Fish Hooks, that act exactly like Aquadynamic Fish Attractors. Other players have reported a green-quality cooking recipe to make Captain Rumsey's Lager, that makes you slightly tipsy and increases your fishing skill by 10 for 3 minutes, and the blue-quality Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat, that has +94 stamina and functions as a reusable +75 fishing lure.
In addtion to these quests, there are reports of new fish being found on the Isle of Quel'danas (a.k.a. Sunwell Isle). The Bloated Giant Sunfish is said to contain random BoE green-quality items and the Luminous Bluetail acts as a sort of mana potion. As is to be expected, the latter shares a cooldown with mana gems and other such consumables.
I'm looking forward to all these changes hitting the live servers, and maybe even discovering more as time passes. Are you an avid fisherman? Are you looking forward to these changes as well?

Um, lol? 95 stamina on a level 60 blue hat?
Must be designed for PvP servers in the case of ganking.
Charlie Feb 12th 2008 8:13PM
seriously. Thats almost 1000 stamina on that stinkin hat.
Definatley to help with being ganked whiled fishing.
Charlie Feb 12th 2008 8:14PM
Oh, the greatest part about the hat, is that for all intesive purposes, you'll never have to buy a lure again!.
irishstu Feb 13th 2008 8:00AM
ummm... what kind of intensive purposes did you have in mind while fishing? http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/intensive.html
peaglemancer Feb 13th 2008 11:00AM
I'm going to guess the phrase you're looking for is "all intents and purposes". Intensive fishing is not recommended by Nat Pagle unless completely drunk.

I can't wait for these changes to hit live! I only took up fishing on my main up high a couple of months ago, but I love it as well - that hat looks very nice!
I fished up a couple of sunfish and a luminous bluetail over on the PTR - the 330 mana over 30 seconds is very low though, especially if it shares a cooldown - maybe blizz left off a '0' there?

Oooh, nice hat. I have two high level fisherladies. I am looking forward to these quests.

The reward for this quest also has Epic items in its loot table.
Very first time trying this quest out (It was "Shrimpin' Aint Easy), netted me "The Two Ring". Epic 'Bind on Equip' Ring, requiring Level 70. +20 to all stats.
I was quite pleased!

I lol'ed. Since it's better than my dps rings it give me another motive to level up fishing.
Extremitus Feb 13th 2008 4:05AM
How did this not geti voted out of existence? Hoax bragging ftl.
Pzychotix Feb 13th 2008 5:15AM
Item is fake.
potatowedge Feb 12th 2008 10:43PM
The Two Ring? Seriously?
About damn time.

I have always enjoyed the fishing part of WOW. I used to fish with my dad when I was growing up and the serenity of the moment seems captured in WOW fishing. Generally, you are some place where there aren't people. The stuff they have which can be used as lures reminds me of the people who would make their spinners and flies. My grandfather swore by cheese curds to catch small mouth bass. I'll be trying these out as soon as they go live.

Sounds amazing! I really need to grind out the rest of my fishing before 2.4 hits live. Anyone have screen shots of the hat on a character?

Sounds pretty awesome! I better start levelling my fishing again.
As a side note, we have the code ready for http://www.wowdailies.com/ for when 2.4 drops to include fishing. Thanks for the advance notice of what the quests are!

I wrote this quest off too early it seems. I thought the rewards in the bag of fishing goodies the first time I got it was completely not worth it but a chance at a new cooking recipe and perhaps a reusable fishing lure, I'm so doing this every day.
Tseran Feb 13th 2008 8:56AM
There is also a waterwalking elixir that is sometimes a reward. I have gotten that twice myself.
illirien Feb 13th 2008 10:30AM
i'm sure the hat bonus to fishing stacks with other fishing bonuses.. this is excellent, since it gives another way to get fishing up to 'highland mixed' levels, where you need well over 500 total skill to get a catch with every cast.
wyrd Feb 13th 2008 3:58PM
The hat doesnt give a bonus to fishing. It puts a lure on the rod you have equiped, so it wont help you get a higher skill than was already was possible.
KaptK Feb 13th 2008 3:10PM
Thanks for the info on the new fishing quests. I'm in that large group of people that haven't been able to get their characters copied over yet. As soon as I do, I plan to check them out.
As a note to the preceding poster, the hat gives the effect of a +75 lure. It's therefore not a way to increase your max fishing because you can use +100 lures already, but unlimited free +75 lures is great. You also don't need your skill way above 500 to not get any more "Fish got away" from the Highland Mixed Schools. The current max needed is 500. It's been that way for awhile. I have 495 with the skill + pole + 100 lures and I very rarely miss a catch.
