People will always try to make their accomplishments seem greater by diminishing the accomplishments of others.
Having a high arena rating takes skill. Coordinating end-game raids takes skill. Using gear as a metric for accomplishment (as opposed to arena rating or bosses downed) is usually an indicator that the player involved hasn't really accomplished much, or has an insecurity complex.
