How many Badges of Justice do you need?
So with the new badge gear vendor showing up on the 2.4 PTR, I know a lot of people who are getting a little bit of shell shock seeing just how many Badges of Justice they'll need to get that gear. At this point, I've got two words for them: Don't Panic. You'll have plenty of time. With 2.4 likely needing at least another month or so to go live, and then at least a few more weeks before most servers do enough dailies to unlock the vendor, I'm betting on somewhere around a good 10 weeks before we're even able to spend the badges we gather. In 10 weeks, you can gather a lot of badges starting right now, and add a few more badge gaining methods when 2.4 itself goes live. Let's look at the options for collecting badges and see how much bang for your buck they give you after the jump. Hopefully, almost everyone can find themselves able to do at least one of them, and we can all look forward to fitting ourselves out when we finally make it to the Sun's Reach Armory.
Ways to get badges starting now:
Run Karazhan once a week: Karazhan is probably the grandmaster of badge sources these days, to the point that some people have dubbed it Badgazhan. With the Huntsman giving 1 badge, Prince Malchezaar 3 badges, and all the other bosses 2 badges, you can get 22 badges every week from Karazhan alone. That may seem like a tall order sometimes, but it's gotten to the point in my guild where we put together pickup Karazhan runs that can clear the whole instance in 3-4 hours, and that's often with at least half the raid in no better than Tier 4 gear. If you're really good (and have 10 accounts handy), you can just 2-man Karazhan. 10 weeks at 22 badges a clear is 220 badges. That's enough to buy one of the weapons (or a set for you dual wielders) and have a good chunk leftover towards a ring or a piece of armor.
Run heroic dungeons 2-3 times a week: You could always run them every day too, but let's just assume you have other stuff to do, whether it be a real life to run, or just dailies or trade skilling or 25-man runs to take care of in game. You can let the daily quest do the choosing for you, or you can choose to run one of the old badge-heavy standbys such as Underbog or Mechanar. If you do a run two times a week, you'll have somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 badges once our hypothetical 10 weeks are up, depending on where you go and how many of those runs are done with a daily quest. That's good for some gloves, belt, or boots with a bit left over, or a ring with a bit more left over. If your group is decently geared and keeps on their toes, it shouldn't take more than 2 hours per run, so you won't be spending too much time on it.
Run Zul'Aman once or twice a week: This one won't be as easy as the last two options. Zul'Aman is definitely a bit of a gear check, and you'll probably need to find specific classes for a lot of fights and roles more so than Karazhan. That said, a run is still doable for a group of dedicated fighters in a mix of Tier 4, Karazhan, and badge gear, and at a 3-day reset, you can take this on twice a week. A full clear will net you 13 badges, and if you can grab Zul'jin's blood once, that's another 10 badges, so even if you only do one clear a week, that's a potential 140 badges in 10 weeks. Again, this one is a little harder and requires a bit better gear than the previous options, but there's great drops to be had, and it will get you most of the badges you need for a weapon.
More ways to get badges when 2.4 goes live:
Run 25-mans: You may have already heard it right here, but in case you didn't, 25-man bosses will start dropping badges when 2.4 comes out. No need to quit 25-manning so you can run Karazhan again, the badges will come to you. It'll probably be a bit slower than some other options at only 2 badges on each boss, but you'll also be getting that old fashioned dropped loot as well. Then you'll just have to spend your badges to get Vanir's Left Fist of Savagery when Grip of Mannoroth just refuses to drop off the Eredar Twins.
Do Dailies: This ones going to be a bit more streaky, but you may recall hearing that certain Shattered Sun Offensive dailies, both at Shattrath City and at the Isle of Quel'danas itself, will provide a reward of Shattered Sun Supplies. This box will usually contain a high level green item, but it also has a chance of containing a badge. This probably isn't a method you want to specifically rely on to get your badges unless you're super casual, but if you're doing dailies anyway, it might be a good idea to seek out the ones that give this reward and do them. Assuming they keep the chance to drop a badge when 2.4 goes live, it might at least save you an extra heroic run by the time the vendor's unlocked.
So there you have it. It probably does seem daunting enough to have to save up 150 badges for a weapon, not to mention over 400 if you want "one of everything," but don't lose hope. One or more of the above methods may just work for you, and by the time it's time to make ready and get that gear unlocked, you'll be ready to go with enough badges to purchase shinies to your heart's desire. With the stats that stuff has, I think the collection work will be worth it.
Now the one problem I have left is that between my 3 level 70 characters, I probably want somewhere close to 1000 badges worth of gear. Even with all the Karazhan and Heroics I run, I don't think I'll quite make all my gearing goals right away. I may have to choose one of them to focus on initially, maybe two. But that's like choosing my favorite child, you know?

about the 25 mans does that mean old world ones too probably not but those would be easy to farm
Angael Feb 19th 2008 1:16PM
I do not need another reason to run Karazhan for the 5 thousandth time.
No thank you, I will get my gear in SSC and TK.
theRaptor Feb 19th 2008 8:42PM
Then you are a bad team mate. If you are not doing easy things to gear yourself up, then why are you wasting 24 other peoples time?
azjolderf Feb 19th 2008 2:34PM
275 for Feral Pants, Chest, and Gloves!
Angael Feb 19th 2008 1:19PM
I will "purchase" my gear with something called Badges of DKP.
Ever heard of them? They are earned by wiping on the same boss countless times, and spending over 200G a week on Flasks, Food, sharpening stones, scrolls, and repairs.
PeeWee Feb 19th 2008 2:21PM
Well, if you prefer that way, go ahead. I'll get the same gear with half the expense and less.
Pucelle Feb 19th 2008 3:06PM
And they certainly count for more than badges earned by wiping on Karazhan bosses for weeks at a time, or badges that are earned by doing a tough heroic run, because as we all know, epics only count when you have thirty-nine other people with you. Oops, did I say thirty-nine? I meant twenty-four.
Tool.
Mity Feb 19th 2008 3:26PM
200g / week?????? how the h*** did u get away with that little? i raid BT as a BM hunter, and i spend upto 250 g / nite! more on wipecontent in sw, add probably 75-90g in repairs.

Feral tank set, Feral DPS set, Heal set, and at least a little bit of a Boomkin set. Could be a LOT of badges lol!
Seriously though, I would love to see this system taken one step further:
Raid bosses drop no gear, just badges, but not the badges we have now. There would have to be Tier 4 badges, Tier 5 badges, etc. It does seem pretty silly that we can run Karazhan to get Tier 6 quality gear.
This would have to be taken even one step further I think. Killing Lurker over and over should not result in Vashj's loot. There would have to be a boss specific token also required for some pieces of gear.
Angael Feb 19th 2008 1:41PM
Amen
Rich Feb 19th 2008 1:51PM
I agree that would be a good way to do.
Keep the bosses having some (but not many) loot drops but have them all drop T4-T6 level "badges". You do the system like the Badge system in place now. T4 stuff stuff requires T4 badges, T5 requires the T4 badges. Also have the ability to turn level badges into higher level ones, say 5 T4 badges equal 1 T5 and 5 T5 = 1 T6. Heck, might as well do Dungeon badges for the D3 stuff.
It allows for steady progression and gives you the ability to do get t5 and t6 equivalent gear from doing lower level stuff, but it just takes awhile.
I have a sneaking suspicion that they are heading more and more in that direction. It would definitely open up raiding to more people. No more hoping for a random drop and having people in various states of gearing in a raid. People will be closer together in gear/
Frank Feb 19th 2008 3:09PM
Yes, 1,000% yes! Badges/tokens for gear is the best way to go. If they want to throw in a random orange drop at the top level, that's fine by me, but for the regular people hacking away in a raid day in and day out badges are the way to go.
math Feb 20th 2008 5:24PM
I like that idea too but that would just be adding grind upon grind. Now instead of excitement right after a boss kill and everyone yelling over vent "what dropped, what dropped???" people will starting saying, " great 4392 badges to go till I can get Epic X"
Blake Feb 19th 2008 1:24PM
With nothing appealing to me as a mage with Spellfire and T4 (I already bought the wand and such), I've been saving badges and have 100 already (I thought I heard a rumor there would be no new badge loot - so I even gave away a few primal nethers to guildies). But with 22 badges from a quick four hour farm of Kara, 8 weeks gives me another 176 and that should be enough to upgrade my Chest, Pants, and Hands. Then we'll just have to wait and see how this new Spirit Based Mana regeneration will work in 2.4.

I currently have 54 badges on me. I'll try and get another 96 for the Crossbow. But, I'm not going to trip over myself trying to run Karazhan every week. Been there done that.
Neocene Feb 19th 2008 1:50PM
I have 2 lvl 70's that are currently raiding kara and SSC/TP. So its hard making a choice on which one will get the priortity on the badge runs. Unlike some hardcore raiders I don't have time to play WoW all day cause I'm a working artist. Personally I think the prices of the badges are a bit much. 75 tops was workable, but now I'm going to be spending weeks and perhaps months farming up enough to get the rest. I've been running karazhan for almost a year and I'm getting pretty tired of that place. If they made badges obtainable thru other means. That would be greatly appreciated by a lot of players.
Michael Thorsen Feb 19th 2008 2:16PM
Neocene, I know that many people won't like what I am about to say . . . but "spending weeks and perhaps months" to get a few specific pieces of gear is exactly what the "hard-core" raiders do. My guild has been raiding only 2 nights a week (BT clear one night, Hyjal the other), but to get to this point has taken many hours of tedious wipes and redo's. Please do not take this as a "raider" coming down on a "casual," but I want to help you understand that getting gear simply takes time. Personally, I am simultaneously upset and elated at the new badge loot. I am happy because now I can get my alt some respectable gear, but I am very upset that the highest levels of gear are available to those who, in essence, "wait long enough."
Similar to the debate that happened when the Season 1 Arena gear became available for purchase with honor, some people--myself included--feel that the accomplishment of completing the toughest content in the game is losing its luster. And this is definitely a very recent trend; it's not as if any of us could just farm ZG or MC over and over again to get gear similar to the Tier 3 gear from Naxx.
All in all, I think that this is the closest that we are going to come to a compromise on gear for so called "casuals" and "hard-core raiders." In theory, the hard-core raiders pay in skill and front-end time while casuals pay in time spent farming.
Cheers

Thank goodness for the new badge loot. As a healing priest (and one disappointed with the lack of decent loot you can purchase currently), the number of daily Heroics, Karazhan raids, and Zul'Aman raids (sometimes three a week, due to the three day reset) I run weekly have garnered me some two hundred badges. My only use for them up to now was in purchasing Nethers for crafting purposes, but I already have five in the bank from Heroic runs where people passed on them.
I plan on cleaning out the vendor when it becomes available!
portia Feb 19th 2008 2:43PM
For my main (Resto Shaman) nothing of interest as we're plowing through T6.
For my farming alt however (Rogue), as many as I can get my grubby little paws on; something of the tune of 485 looks about my goal... ho boy.
brucimus Feb 19th 2008 3:01PM
300+ for me...looks like upgrading Blazeguard and Lionheart Champion to tier 3 BS weapons are goin to cost about 75 badges for the 5 Nether Vortexes apiece...and also my warrior would like the ZA themed Fury stuff for the off chance he ever gets to go full fury in a raid setting
