Tuskarr info on official site
Slowly and steadily, the official Wrath of the Lich King site is getting fleshed out with some actual information. Today, they added a page about the walrus-inspired Tuskarr, a new neutral race in Northrend. The Tuskarr are nomadic and peaceful, with tribal affiliations inscribed on their tusks. Despite their pacifistic nature, they are frequently attacked by taunka and those pesky murlocs. They are excellent fishers, and catch whales, giant squid, and "unnamed leviathans."
Although the info box at the right says "both" under "Horde/Alliance," the body of the text says "with the Horde's recent arrival they have found a new ally in the ongoing struggle against the hostile forces of Northrend." Not quite sure how to interpret that. Nethaera clarifies by calling them neutral in this forum post. Their faction name is "The Kalu'ak" (what is it with Blizz and apostrophes?), and their main settlement is called Kaskalka, in the Borean Tundra, with outposts at Kamagua in the Howling Fjord and Moa'ki Harbor in Dragonblight. Aside from a few bits of art and screenshots, that's all the new page contains; you can check it out here. More information on the Tuskarr is also available at Wowwiki.

Am I the only one who wishes these were a playable race - maybe with a fishing racial. Get on it Blizz!
Leewoo Feb 21st 2008 3:42PM
I agree. I (and I'm sure others) am disappointed that there isn't a new playable race. WotLK looks to be a very pvp centric expansion with the march to 80 for the pve crowd.

All is forgiven if they give us mini-Tuskarr pets... or penguins... :)

What about the female Tuskarr? Oh wait, thats right... blizzard forgets about females unless they're sexy or playable. BOoooo Blizzard! I want to see a chubby she-tuskaar.

these will eventually go horde-side, and will be the horde equivelant to the dwarf. tusk carvings instead of facial hair customisation.

I like the fequent apostrophes bacause it greatly increases the likelyhood that players will pronounce things correctly. And by correctly, I mean the way I pronounce them.

Apostrophes win
it sounds cool and creates the idea of some tribal civilisation
apostrophes are not cool on traditional medieval races (Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes, Elves in life and undeath)
and Tuskarr rock hard! they look so huggable

Rune-tusks ftw

The only thing that is annoying me is that they don't wear much clothing, so there is a chance they won't have a Tabard for when I get exalted with them.
I'm a tabard collector. It's a nasty habit.

Kaskalka..... Kalkaska? Is Bliz runnin out of creativity on names? lol

Random apostrophes are the sign of a well fleshed-out fantasy universe. Long live Mok'sul, fourth potentate of Chok'nal! The War'fends of Chug'raf salute you, mighty Yut'por! See? It just works.

They need to move from ' to * or & or %.
I just want a release date so I can take off work!!!

Kalu'ak eh. No one is going to be able to actually pronounce that the way they have it spelled unless they can do a glottal stop. I know everyone will be saying Kaah-LOO-ahk. At best guess, it should be Kah-LU-'-ahk. Heck, I try to say it with the stop and half the time cough.
Eliah Hecht Feb 21st 2008 4:22PM
The funny part is that glottal stop isn't a particularly difficult sound; English speakers just tend to overthink it. We even have it in English, in words like "uh-oh" or (in certain UK dialects) "water" (think "wa'er").
Elmo Feb 21st 2008 4:35PM
Kaloo-Akh
JR Feb 22nd 2008 8:22AM
Why are you assuming the apostrophe represents a glotal stop? It may represent any sound. We can't tell for sure without knowing the writing/transliteration conventions for their language. There are some writings systems, for example, in which it represents a glotal fricative.
Not that I think anyone at Blizzard has given this the slightest thought. The apostrophe is just the preferred way for people who are completely clueless about languages to make their words sound "alien".
Eliah Hecht Feb 22nd 2008 8:29AM
Agreed entirely, JR.

This does not answer the REAL questions we need answered, though:
1. Will we "find mah bucket"?
2. What of their mortal enemy, DIA'BEETUS?
/gotta put in that apostrophe :)
makishima Feb 21st 2008 4:29PM
haha I think I might actually be disappointed if there is no quest there to find a bucket for one of them.

wowwiki says:
"If a person brings several large fish, he is treated like a long lost and much beloved cousin."
that would be fun if you could get rep by bringing them fish, and get a water mount from them. there needs to be more fast water traveling, besides druid seal form. hunters need aspect of the fish.
