Breakfast Topic: Heroic PuGs from hell
Gravedancer of the Runetotem server has started a thread that has been at times both amusing and horrifying on a subject that's near and dear to the hearts of many players: the pitfalls of Heroic PuGs. Now, I generally just run dungeons with guild groups, but every once in a while no-one's really interested, and I really need 4 or 5 more badges so I can get that one last piece of badge gear before the raid this weekend, and I find myself opening the LFG tool. So yes, I can sympathize too.So what makes WoW players cringe to see when they join a PuG for a heroic dungeon?
A lot of people talked about having to deal with group members in greens, generally attributing it to the lowering of the reputation needed to gain a heroic key. I have to say that I fully support lowering the heroic key requirement to honored, if only for the sake of my alts, and I know that in many cases at the 5-man level, skill is greater than gear. However, when a prospective tank shows up in level 62 greens, there might be a problem. No matter how skilled a tank is at keeping aggro, if they only have 8k health, it's going to be a hell of a time keeping them up. Plus, the skilled tanks generally pride themselves on keeping their gear up to date anyway, at least most of the time.
Then there was the talk about people being asked to do stuff that wasn't really in their power, like the fury warrior being asked to sap. Yeah, sometimes it's hard to know how some aspects of the class work if you haven't played it, and I'll admit that I have asked a Mage to Polymorph an elemental (and felt dumb about it straight afterwards), but there's some point at which you should know the very basics about what each class can do so you can work together with them, right?
Of course, a few other points people made I was a bit more lenient on. Some people say they leave if the tank doesn't have threat meters. I'm crazy for Omen myself, and I don't play without it, but I don't expect everyone to have the same addons I do when it comes to a casual PuG. Maybe it's because I played Everquest (Which never had threat meters to the best of my knowledge) for so many years, but I don't mind playing with someone without a threat meter and just being careful with my damage on a 5-man level. That said, If I'm not tanking on my Druid, I'm probably playing my Hunter, and then I can just feign off the threat. For a class without an easy threat dump, I'm sure having threat meters is a lot more needful.
Oh, if I were to add my own example of how I knew my group was in trouble, I'd add one really lovely PuG I had in Sethekk Halls where the mage would actually attack me every time I got mind controlled, once succeeding in killing me and wiping the group. Her explanation? "I couldn't help it, it was too tempting!"
Of course, we DID finish that run -- after a few more wipes.
What about your own horror stories? Have you had the Heroic PuG from hell? Where do you draw the line and leave? Do greens make you grimace? Do you insist that everyone use certain addons? Or is it more of a skill or knowledge issue?

I have a list of heroic pug rules... List is almost at 80 rules... I wont list them all here - only some highlights...
1. Never more than one hunter. Sorry all you good hunters out there.
2. Wipe max = 2.. After 3rd wipe I call it...
3. No Offspecs or PvP specs... Tanks and healers must be on spec for there role...
4. Targets must be marked and kill order must be followed by all...
5. Enchant your gear... No enchants is the same as taking 2/3 pieces of gear off...
ETC ETC ETC
I could go on and on... If I think it is worth dropping a group over, I drop... If it is iffy, I ask a friend not in group if I should drop... Most heroic pugs go really fast if people know what they are doing...
Heroics are for Grownups... You should know the encounters and come prepared... If you want easy to obtain gear - go farm AV!

How do you ever get a group together?
JPN Feb 22nd 2008 10:14AM
If you spent less time making lists, asking for advice and dropping groups, and more time playing, you might not have these kinds of problems.
Bloodthorn Feb 22nd 2008 10:16AM
I've tanked several heroics, including SL and SH, as fury or arms specced, without any real hassle, all it requires is that the dps people play instead of nuke.

LOL wut?
I've done Heroic Mech runs with 2 Hunters, no wipes, with only 1 person or 2 dying. Even the flaming wench went down easy. Hunters, in case you didn't know, are OP for PvE.
Maybe you have just been playing with bad Hunters?

It's elitist assholes like this that drove me away from the game for about a year. I don't enjoy getting invited to a heroic run only to have the group disband because I don't have purples or enchants.

lol and eyeroll @ these pretentious lists. You shouldn't let the game become a job.

@Bloodchills
My shadow priest has over 1k shadow damage with 4 PvP items and up until last week had a _green_ trinket still equipped (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=25619). Would you pass on me too?
Mindaika Feb 22nd 2008 9:32AM
Yes.
Just kidding. So, I'm not exactly a Purple Person, but the fact is: you can't get good gear unless you run heroics. I've been in some good PUGs, and I've been in some bad ones. Gear is important to some extent, but I'd take a competent, respectful tank in blues over some of the Purple People I've had wipe groups repeatedly.
However, in addition to Deuce's Rule #1: No more than two of anything. There's no use for more than two of any class in any 5-man.
My main rule is this: Have a drink and relax. Yeah, something like 80% of the PUGs I've run are the suck, as are something like 99.9% of WSG groups. But hey, most of the time it beats farming ogres for gold. Esp since there's nothing left to buy anyway (at least in my realm).

Recent experience in Heroic Ramps-
The 2nd Boss, dont remember his name, puts the debuff on that does big damage quickly.
Our rogue gets it, doesn't run out of range, and wipes the group.
As we are corpse running back, we remind him to run out when he gets the debuff.
Second attempt, the same thing happens. As we are running back, we once again remind him.
Third attempt, the tank gets the debuff, the rogue asks in chat, "What do we do if the tank gets the debuff?"

The other day I was leveling my alt (a priest) and was amazed to discover I was already honoured with the Cenarian Expedition and could buy the heroic key.... @ level 64. As a shadow priest, I might be able to go in with a good group and and make it through but there is no loot for me and I probably wouldn't contribute much... what really scares me though is the possibility of a tank at level 64 trying to tank my heroic pug because he already has the key...
shoulda left it at revered or something...
Milktub Feb 22nd 2008 11:22AM
My warrior was Honored with Thrallmar, CE and Lower City before level 65. I made a joke of it by buying the respective heroic keys and asking in guild chat if anyone wanted me to tank a heroic (my warrior is officially my "alt" in guild).
But really, I don't have heroic horror stories, since I have my rep/gear check I do before even getting to the instance. There was a funny little happening during a H Mech run (by far my favorite Heroic -- takes no more than 20 minutes to grab two badges). The rogue with hadn't been to mech on his rogue before, just as a mage. So we get to the "Hammer" mini-boss and I do my "Hammer is bad" speech and start it up. Guy "raises his hammer menacingly" ... and rogue keeps stabbing, and dies.
We finish up, and he says, "so that's why you said 'Hammer is bad'"

My druid was revered with cen ex before I had flight form. The revered requirement didn't guarantee lvl 70, but let's be honest, nobody's dumb enough to bring a 64 into a heroic unless you're planning on 4 manning it.
jrodman Feb 22nd 2008 6:24PM
I was actually *recruited* to heal steamvaults at level 62 or 63 or so (I forget) by some t6 goofballs who were running it for some reason and lost their healer. It was a truly odd experience.
Nonheroic, though.
Dipstick Feb 22nd 2008 9:23AM
I just don't even bother going to the places that most PuGs wouldn't be successful - that basically limits me to the 'easiest' heroics: mechanar, botanica, slave pens, ramparts and underbog.
Anything else and I'd take a good long look at who we had and what sort of player they were.
I feel sorry for the PuGs that try the rock hard heroic dailies. I don't know if they're just brave or stupid... nah, they just expect the tank and healer to give them a free ride.
bovie Feb 22nd 2008 9:27AM
I like doing PUGs. I find that once myself ( the tank) and the healer know what we're doing, it goes ok. Last night I ended up doing a Kara PUG, and we cleared up to Curator without a wipe. We still had our fair share of morons, like the rogue who refused to DPS the Curators adds, and the lock who wouldnt fear Roar in the Wizard of Oz event. As long as the core of the group knows what its doing, the run should go fine. I look to PUG Heroic Slave Pens daily for badges in preparation for 2.4 rewards, and I'd be disappointed in myself if it wasnt done in 45mins.

"5. Enchant your gear... No enchants is the same as taking 2/3 pieces of gear off..."
Seriously? Really? Wow. I'd say maybe that having no enchants is the same as removing the stat points from one piece of gear.
But I Armory every player in a PuG. If they're not at least close to revered with the faction in question, I'm out. Knowledge of the heroic being run is too essential to success.
Deuce Feb 22nd 2008 9:53AM
To clarify...
No enchants vs all gear enchanted...
All gear enchanted gives stat buff equall to 2/3 pieces of gear.
Korek Feb 22nd 2008 9:39AM
To the poster who said "more than 2 pieces of pvp gear" is a deal-breaker. I'd say that depends on heavily on the class and spec in question.
For example, a boomkin druid's pvp set is arguably very good pve gear too. It is high on armor (helps in moonkin form against splash damage), high on spelldamage, high on stamina, and high on mana regeneration. It is low on spellcrit, which is ironically a *good* thing in 5-man content as crit-chains are risky for pulling aggro without meaning to. In fact, generally speaking a DPS spec of any class in pvp gear is going to be better than their equivilent dungeon blues.
A few pieces of pvp gear on a tank or healer aren't necessarily deal breakers either. So long as the tank has sufficient defense (and block/parry/dodge depending) and the healer has enough +healing and mana regen, a few pieces can buff up stamina and increase general survivability. Don't be so eager to assume that pvp gear automatically means "n00b".
Naix Feb 22nd 2008 9:58AM
So true. I have 1500+ healing on my pvp gear and can heal ANY Heroics instance just fine.
