Details on the WoW Minis game
WoW Insider has obtained a copy of the "sell sheet" sent to distributors about the upcoming WoW minis game, and it contains information about pricing, pack size, and even some hints at a release date.Basically, the minis will become available in three different ways: there will be the core booster sets, which will contain three minis of the same Horde or Alliance faction, plus three character cards and six ability cards, and will have a suggested retail price (SRP) of $14.99 per booster. Additionally, each booster will have a chance to include an ingame Loot Card, supposedly from the Trading Card Game (there is no word if there will be loot cards specifically for the minis game), and a 1/8 chance to have an "epic" character.
More info on the starter sets, including the full text of the "sell sheet," after the break.
Then there will be two versions of the starter set, the core starter and the core deluxe starter. The core starter set will have four miniatures (two per faction), plus character cards (one for each) and eight ability cards (2 for each character), as well as six dice (three Horde and three Alliance), a game map, a rulebook, and a set 1 checklist. The deluxe set will have three minis from each faction (with character and 2 ability cards for each), six custom dice, a deluxe gameboard, a deluxe rulebook, and a customizable terrain/token sheet. The standard starter will SRP at $24.99, and the deluxe will SRP at $39.99.
There is no set release date, but the sell sheet says the game is due in Fall of 2008, with orders due by March 5, 2008. So lots of new info on the game, and even some hints at how it might be played (obviously the game will have Horde and Alliance factions, use character and abiilty cards during play, and have the characters navigate a game map, perhaps by rolling dice).
The complete sell sheet text is below. Keep in mind that this text is meant to go to distributors and retailers of the game, hence the "selling points" and continued references to "repeat purchases."

Eh. I've never been a big fan of any of the miniatures games like Heroclix, etc. I tried it but if I am going to play a game like that I'd much rather be playing a pen and paper RPG or a board game.

What I'm curious about is: are these miniatures only 'player' style characters?
Essentially making this a 3-D arena game?
The other miniature games I've seen have both player and monster figures, opening up a wider variety of pieces to collect.
If this game is based only on the player architypes and armor skins - it seems like a rather limited pool for repeat business.
"Collectors and MMO players who wish to find someone similar to their character will drive repeat purchases."
Struck me as coldly calculating, but it is very true.
I'll be keeping an eye out for a display sheet to see if my Troll girl is going to be in print.

Let's take a closer look there: "more dynamic sculpts, more detailed paints... than other miniatures games"
I've seen the sculpts and paints. Wow minis =//= Games Workshop minis. They shouldn't even TRY to claim they have the best sculpts. :P

This thing must be more of a formality. You must be out of your mind not to order these if you work at a comic shop, or the like.

I'll be getting some of these, probably.
Anyone in SoCal wanna strike up a weekend Minis thing? :P

Unless these things are basically action figures, I don't want to have anything to do with them. Heroclix are $11 for 5 figures, and Star Wars minis are $15 for 7 figures. Both of these work out to a little more than $2/figure, and both games come with cards. $15 for 3 minis is ridiculous, not to mention the $25 for 4 (wtf?) and $40 for 6 models of the starter/deluxe starter. Who is UD kidding trying to sell this game at such ridiculous prices?

It would be nice if they had an RP mini line.. ones that we could paint ourselves. I hate the whole 'collectible mini' thing.. I don't want to get random minis, I want THAT one.. No interest in the game, I already play WoW. I'll probably buy a couple starter packs, once I see what the mini quality actually is.. But I'll never play. I think the idea is neat, just not for me.. I'll just put them on my work desk next to my MasterChief action figs and WizKids Pirates ships.

Dear Blizzard: Please stop. I beg you to stop. Stop now. I barely have enough money to feed and clothe myself. I can't just keep spending every penny on your cash-grab schemes. Don't you have hearts? Don't you have one shred of mercy for your fellow man? I guess I could buy a few boosters if I only ate every other day. Maybe if I stop shampooing my hair I'll have a few more dollars to spend on WoW-marketed junk. Maybe if I just get a fifth roomate I can make ends meet. Okay, I'll try it your way Blizzard. Just don't make any more stuff.
Forever yours,
Finacially Vacuous

So the figures you get will be random? Hmm. I think I prefer games like Warhammer where you can buy the little statues you want separately. Mostly I just like the statues. Haha. I don't even play table-top games.

Remember that the minis are 40mm scale, compared to your typical 28-30mm scale D&D- or Heroclix-style mini. Larger mini means more detail in scale compared to the other plastic minis games out there (and an increase in price).

Well, I wouldn't venture to second-guess someone with your experience in this industry, but so far there's been nothing about the scale here. This *would* be very expensive IMO if ehse turn out to be 28-30mm figures.

Blah! I want the equivalant of Warhammer 40k with WoW models. I wanna paint it how I want it to look and be able to pick which characters I want instead of relying on chance. I might buy some on eBay after they have been opened and repaint if it doesn't look how I want... oh yeah... and use modified WH 40k rules to play. This is starting to sound like a lot of work.

Well if you go by the pics on the official site the Draenie comes in at 63mm tall to the tip of his weapon. A gnome is 28mm

Well, as a long time GW kid, the thing that has got me interested in this is the involvement of Mike Mcvey, a long-time GW designer who did some class work for GW back in the 90's. He gives the whole thing a seal of quality that some of the Wizkids / Wizards collectible minatures lines lack.

They do look to be bigger scale, hence the price.
kiaus Apr 16th 2008 7:15AM
That said, I've noticed he is working on the latest D&D minis as well, prolific guy !
