WoW Moviewatch: The Fat Cow V, and some bad news about Stage6

Read on about why Stage6 gets a lump of coal this year ...
In other news, Stage6, a major source for high-quality WoW machinima, will be shutting down their site as of February 28th, 2008. Apparently operating costs were just too much for them, and, for some reason, sponsorship or paid membership was out of the question. This leaves machinimators scrambling to find an alternative with very short notice to do so.
If you are a WoW machinimator in search of sites to upload your videos to, I highly suggest GameTube and Blip.tv. While GameTube has the higher quality and many features in the works, Blip offers the ability to upload multiple versions of the same file within a single video page. Blip also provides flash compression of the first file upload.

Fun to listen to i guess.
Am i the only one who thinks that watching just game play footage is far from Machinima.

I am also happy to offer the Machinima Archive as a host for movies, whatever quality and size. (In other words, there is enough space to handle high-quality renders easily.)

Click the box in the upper left and follow link to "contributions." Note that contributions to the Machinima Archive are permanently preserved. You can also upload to the opensource movies collection and leave a message in the Machinima Archive forum; I'll move your movie to the Machinima Archive. Or e-mail me. I'm the curator of the collection, so it's easy to find my name (hint: Lowood) and e-mail.

mneill,
you're right, of course. We'll soon be opening up a Virtual World videos collection on Machinima Archive, which will make it easier to separate "documentary" footage from machinima.

Its pretty clear why sponsorship and paid membership aren't an option if you read the link.
"and an employee of DivX, Inc., the company behind the service."
"As Stage6 grew quickly and dramatically (accompanied by an explosion of other sites delivering high quality video), it became clear that operating the service as a part of the larger DivX business no longer made sense."
Stage6 was run by DivX, who didn't want to deovte the extra resources (both money AND staff, the latter probably being the harder to come by) to keep it going now that its grown so much. Nothing complicated about it.

Not to diss his PvP abilities, but despite the fact that he's wearing S3 gear, he doesn't seem to be all that good. Admittedly, I couldn't stand watching past the first 1/3 of the movie or so, but still....
Maybe I should have given him a chance and continued watching, but I couldn't bring myself to do so.

Another to consider is Vimeo.com, mostly known for its ability to play HD video, its easy to pick up and use interface, and very clean embeded video player w/ the option to download source material. Haven't used Blip or GameTube, so can't make a comparison, but as a videographer and editor I've been very happy with Vimeo so far.

P.S. The Internet Archive is also a great place to deposit a copy of your movie so people will always have a copy of it somewhere, but probably not the best place to go to play it.

Wow, apparently giving away free bandwidth with no revenue stream loses money. Go figure.
