Forum post of the day: Really bad quests
Most of us have at least a couple of alt projects that we're working on. Once you've leveled to seventy you get a feeling for which quests are a breeze and which ones are painful. Arross of Thorium brotherhood started a thread entitled Really bad quests where players listed their least favorite quests. Some honorable mentions include:
- Arross of Thorium. "I have to say so far the worst quest I have ever had was Super Sticky in Un'goro Crater. The drop rate isn't bad, it's horrible."
- Shrosarias of Burning Blade, "Any quests having to do with murloc. Murlocs = evil."
- Ashcroft of Smolderthorn, "Zeth'Gor Must Burn! had me tearing my hair out by the roots. It was so very demoralizing to go from BG-topper to single-quest-dyer in one fell swoop."
- Arteree of Rivendare, "Almost every quest in Westfall."
- Etamalgren, "imo, any escort quests are the worst quests overall, except for the skettis daily and the nagrand escort."
Most of the bad quests listed include drop rates or something else that makes them exceptionally time-consuming. I have to say my least favorite quest is Shizz Work in Hellfire Peninsula. This is an easy quest to miss as it's over to the side of Thrallmar. I find it really gross to root through Felhound Poo. Yes, I know it's virtual poo, but that doesn't make it any less yucky. It's only slightly more yucky than A Rare Bean where you have to root through Talbuk poo. I love the Nagrand Cherries you get from the quest, but I'd rather keep my virtual hands clean. There are plenty of harder and more frustrating quests to do, but those are definitely the crappiest quests out there.
What's your least favorite quest?

What, no mention of "Of Thistleheads and Eggs..." the quest in which you continuously vomit, lose health, get stunned while aggroing everything in sight, with the obligatory ultra-rare drop?
It's got it all: http://thottbot.com/q10547

This one redeems itself when you get to the puking scene in Shattrath though. I had to laugh out loud at how unadulteratedly ludicrous that was. That whole Son of Oronokk (sp?) quest line is just pure WoW, right there. Death, drama, sadness, projectile-vomiting tentacle-faced blueberry space aliens... what more could you ask for in a game?

Two words...delivery quests......ARGH!!! worst chain of all time is the one starting in shimmering flats that has you travel back and forth between 1k needles and STV after gathering various items from OTHER zones. omfg what a pain in the keester. even a mage would agree it sux as neither is located near a major city or direct FP. Run from shimmering flats to Tanairs....Tanaris FP to org ..boat to grom'gol...FP to booty bay...turn in...gather some other thing with a horrendous drop rate back to booty bay...FP to grom'gol...boat to org...FP to tanaris...run to shimmering flats. even with a Hearth set to one inn or another your looking at a couple of days to complete the chain. Stupid Goblins/Gnomes gather your own crap for your contraptions!!!!!
Votum Feb 27th 2008 4:14PM
Why don't you just take the boat from BB to Ratchet? Much less time then going to Org :)
Boon Feb 27th 2008 9:25PM
Thing is that you start the chain at

I'm surprised no on has mentioned how time consuming and aggravating the Winterspring Frostsaber quest is. The drop rate on collecting shardtooth and chillwind meat is horrid! Although much easier now, when I did it it was 75 reputation points a turn in to exalted. Took me a month and a half. Still love my purple kitty!!!

I have been chuckling at all these saying, "oh yeah, that quest sucks. Ah, yeah, I'd forgotten how awful that one is" etc. And it's like the game taunts you. "Bring me 4 coursair sweat glands" for the priest quest in Azshara was absolutely worse than the "Bring me pristine horns off coursairs" I had to do for my hunter. I remembered how it took hours of running around killing deer to get the required number of antlers. I got 2 glands right off the bat. Didn't get another gland for another 90 minutes. Yeah, when I turned the glands in, I went up a level, but that was 3 hours of my life I won't get back for 4 glands.
With the faster leveling, if you ground out levels to 70 pre-2.3, you have some sort of idea if what quests and which zones you'd like to level in which means you can sort of avoid quests you don't like.
I hate escort quests. I don't mind the ones where you have to run all over creation to talk to someone IF they have something interesting to say, something that furthers along a plot line. But sending me some place for the sake of sending me places irritates me.
What irritates me is collecting quests for an instance, having, say 6 to 8 quests in your log for Uldaman as a for instance, and turning them all in only to be told, "Go back into Uldaman and kill so and so" or "look for such and such". Oh come on. I just spend 3 hours in that place. I don't want to go back in.

Oh dear god that Courser Antlers hunter quest in azshara...
One and a half levels in a non-rested state before i got them both..
cynthias Feb 26th 2008 4:51PM
Worst quest ever for me was hunting reindeer antlers in Azshara for my hunter's ST quest. I put 98k XP killing coursers (and yes, I was killing the right ones), which was about a level and a half.

We could add the quests in the Shimmering Flats to the list of horrible quests. You basically pick up a half-dozen quests on the race track of "Kill X of Y" and "Bring me W of Z". So you go around and around and around the shimmering flats for a few hours just hoping and hoping that last Salty Scorpid Venom or Hollow Vulture Bone will drop already so you can turn the damn quests in and get out of that horrid grey wasteland.

The Star, The Hand, and the Heart. Hands down, I swear I kilt murlocs for 6 hours on that island waiting for the drop. Never again.
Manasmith Feb 26th 2008 6:01PM
Does anybody remember the infamous Pear Pie quest that was featured on legendary thread?
Felwrathe Feb 26th 2008 6:05PM
"Shrosarias of Burning Blade, "Any quests having to do with murloc. Murlocs = evil.""
Quoted for truth.
Invictus Feb 26th 2008 6:51PM
Absolute worst for me was "Tanaris Field Sampling".....not only does it involve more than 1 zone, but then you have like a 90 minute timer to get it done, and then you have to kill a bunch of mobs, and not every mob gives you the item you need....just to get a crappy reward.
The worst of all worlds.
Mihn Feb 27th 2008 3:23AM
Yes, agreed. This quest is full of suck.
davidchillier Feb 26th 2008 8:10PM
Call of Water; Shaman class quest (Horde) lvl 20
Sends you all over the place to obscure locations with bad directions, and having to return to the same spot in middle of the barrens after every step.
I don't know a single person who thought this quest made any sense or didn't need a tone of help.
JR Feb 26th 2008 9:23PM
I'd also like to second the "Zeth'Gor Must Burn!" reference. That thing was surely put into the game by sadistic devs to demoralize all the players who were so overjoyed they just got to Outland. I did it with two other people (warlock and druid, me being a hunter), and it was still very difficult.
boworr Feb 27th 2008 8:29AM
Without a doubt... the two worst quests are the 'walking around Shattrath to decide if you're Aldor/Scryer" and the "walking around quest" before you can go to Durnhold.
After the 1st time, I just want to have a 'SKIP' button and get one with it.
t3hl0wn Feb 28th 2008 1:25AM
I dont see what is so bad about Zeth'gor must burn, I found it kinda fun...
However I remember a quest from tanaris that was annoying as hell, escorting Tooga to his wife, he followed you so it was easy...but he WHINED the whole damn time and oh my god if I could just turn him into a Soothing Turtle Bisque i would be so happy.

The quest that rewards Nagrand Cherries (you have to search for "dong") it's quite funny and I loved it. I did it at level 70, when I was all shiny epic, because I missed it and I found it very amusing, because I was all shiny and rich, yet I was digging into poo :))
I have even called a friend to do it together for the laugh.
I really like the quests where you don't have to kill anything for drops, like collecting items, chatting with NPCs, etc, because I feel the need of doing some peacefull quests from now and then, rather then killing stuff every time.
One of my favourite quests in WoW is a very low level quest in Teldrassil, that you get from a satyr. After you complete his quest, you get an other one from a nelf, to punish the satyr. You have to collect some pine cones and stuff, and those will turn him into a frog. When I did it for the 1st time I was so amused by it LOL..
Most night elf quests are pretty good and interesting, but dwarf and gnome quests are pretty boring imo, in terms of story and lore (except the ones with Uldaman)
