Just in case you couldn't wait to get your hands on one of
those extremely gross real-life Mana Energy Potions we posted about a while back, now's your chance:
ThinkGeek is selling them at a reasonable price (even though actually drinking them probably isn't reasonable at all). As
mephron points out on WoW LJ, the
nutritional stats are atrocious: B12 is definitely good for you, but putting 6667% of anything's daily allowance in your system just doesn't seem right.
And Robin was right -- these have a ton of caffeine in them. ThinkGeek says there's 160mg of caffeine in each bottle. That's not exactly lethal, of course (
the lethal dose is about 150mg per kg of body mass), but finishing off a six pack of these over a weekend of gaming will not be good for us. Still, if you want them after all that, there you go.

Energy drinks just give me a headache anyway so I'll be staying clear of this. Any kind of tea would be my drink of choice for long play sessions.
harry.j.macdonald Feb 27th 2008 6:27PM
Loose leaf earl grey tea in my tea pot and fresh milk and some sugar is enough energy for me. But if things get Very intensive i might take a nice freshly ground coffee.
Or just stop playing and sleep.
mattarin Feb 27th 2008 6:34PM
that is the dumbest idea ever. i think i will just stick to soda and kool-aid.

Actually, There is no toxicity level (or at least no data) for B12 (because it's an essential, naturally occurring nutrient) so taking large doses generally doesn't do any severe harm. Mega dosing B12 can cause the following:
• mild diarrhoea
• anxiety and panic attacks
• heart palpitations
• insomnia
• breathing problems
• chest pain
• skin rash, hives or itchy swollen skin

So better standard problems for those few WOWers that live in their Mom's basement... Drink a good strong coffee or tea... or have some Pepto or Imodium and salve near by...

Yeah, megadosing is a fairly common practice for some elements. Linus Pauling has been advocating megadosing Vitamin C for decades, which is why stuff like Emergen-C have gained in popularity.
But yeah, too much of a single vitamin, even one that's good for you, will eventually become difficult for your body to handle and you'll wind up with a nice bout of diarrhea. A packet of Emergen-C has 417% of the recommended intake of B12 in it; I can't imagine what 6,000% of it would do to you.

Eat an apple. It works, seriously.

Eh, the FDA is paid well to recommend certain things in certain quantities in order to encourage consumption on a level that manufacturers desire for profitability. The reality is that most things with a daily recommended intake can be consumed in much higher quantities with no significant ill effects.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reference_Daily_Intake
The FDA recommends 90mg of Vitamin C, but the actual upper limit of potential toxicity is 2000. Quite a large amount of variance there right? The percentages can get nuts when you're talking about something where the RDA is 1.1 but the toxicity limit is 100+. Lots of things have no known toxicity limit, because for the most part you'll absorb and pass it before your body can build up a toxic limit. (marijuana/thc being one of these sorts of things, oddly enough)

Actually, we quite like the taste of the mana potions :-/. It seems like people's reactions vary pretty widely, so we picked a formula with which most people were quite happy when it came to taste and energy output.
As for the rather large dose of B12, among other vitamins, we picked water-soluble vitamins so if you have more than you need they wash out of your system. We haven't had any problems with them.
I was pretty interested to read all of the clinical uses for B12 on the MayoClinic website in doses from around 400mcg to 500mcg with some treatments using 2000mcg of B12 a day!

I got a few of these and gave some to a couple of co-workers. We are always bringing in new types of energy drinks. I usually may have a sip of one, but I'm primarily a one Redbull a day person.
Essentially, I used one of my co-workers as the guinea pig 'cause I knew he would try it no matter what. He reported that although it tasted medicinal and needed a chaser (of the individuals choice), it worked....extremely well. Not the type to be affected by a lot of energy drinks, he was shaking and felt ready to run several miles.
After he got home, the Mana Energy Potion hadn't worn off, so he said he got all of his horses (he is a licensed animal rescue facility), the barn, and other animals taken care of much quicker than he normally does. Said the potion lasted about six hours total.
I haven't tried it yet. March 13th is probably the day I will try it because I already know it will be a long rough day at work that day.

That's good to know because Red Bull and other energy drinks usually do nothing for me.
brandon varnell Feb 27th 2008 11:31PM
I wouldn't mind having (1) just to have sitting on my desk but i wouldn't drink it, energy drinks do absolutely nothing for me, i drank a 12 pack of bawls once and fell asleep after the 12th one, i bought a 6-pack of redbull at target once, drank them all back to back and they did nothing, i have tried every energy drink out there
caffeine does nothing for me which sucks

They need to be renamed. Every single person who I've seen get one of these has gotten a somewhat swampy green "potion." I haven't seen a blue one in anything other than their promo shots yet.
Ninjud Feb 28th 2008 9:35AM
6000% of B12 is how much some of those "cleaner" drinks have. You know, the ones that let you pass drug tests. At least, thats what someone told me....
Theserene Feb 28th 2008 1:09PM
I'll stick to my earl grey tea thanks. That stuff looks far too artificial and would probably give me a wicked migraine.
Sarah Feb 28th 2008 2:56PM
You can take too much B vitamins, trust me, I used to juice up on the stuff to keep me awake driving ( I do alot of traveling for my job) and the next day my right hand and arm swelled up real big. Apparently that's a side effect of consuming too much B-complex vitamins, but i was taking them straight in a liquid vitamin supplement, who knows how many mg I consumed.
And to Ninjud, I think your right, Niacin (part of the B-complex vitamins) is used in various products to "clean" your system.
ChefCK Feb 28th 2008 6:04PM
Another side affect of taking multiple/continuous doses of B type vitamins is that your urine will turn a greenish color until they are completely flushed out of your system.
This side affect happens with other vitamins in large amounts, but I can't remember which ones.
As for the Mana Potion being green, maybe it should be renamed to Swiftness Potion or Elixir of Major Agility. :)

I overdosed on caffine once. It's not something you want to experience. I could feel myself dying and my organs shutting down. Pretty scary. I was trying to do really well in school and I felt taking lots of caffine made me extra sharp. So I literally drank about 6+ cups of coffee at every single meal. And to top it off I chugged "ripped fuel" pills. I literally would take maybe a dozen a day along with 20+ cups of black coffee. They were the pills a baseball pitcher died from using and the chemical in the pills has since been banned. I did that for a couple weeks. I'm lucky to be alive. I passed out from pain in my friends car in the fetal position and that was the wake up call. I never went to the doctor but when I woke up I was ok luckily. It was crazy but it did work. I had the highest grades in my school for a couple months probably and I was s meat head jock usually. Moral of the story is don't abuse these drinks and be careful.
