Forum post of the Day: Arena Realms
I couldn't be more excited about Blizzard's official 3v3 tournament. The arena test realm is active and the accessible gear is available for potential challengers to ogle. The server is inhabited by only level 70 characters. There is absolutely no PvE content. Havick of Shattered Hand suggested that Blizzard should open permanent arena-only servers.
Many responders agreed with this suggestion. This is partly to do with a stark divide between PvE and PvP players. Many raiders would love to see PvP eliminated from the game or at least separated. Frustration over arena queues and boredom with the PvE environment increases the desire for arena-only servers. Blizzard has long said they were working on additional realm types. Roirrawcro of Jaedenar believes that arena realms are an inevitability if Blizzard intends to make World of Warcraft into a viable e-sport.
Now don't get me wrong I love the arena, but I'm not too keen on doing it full time. The arena tournament server concept works because all players will have access to gear and there is a cash prize for performing well. If there were permanent arena servers with the current gear configuration would make it pointless to play on an arena-only server.
Perhaps if you could copy over a character at level 70 and gear it up with arena rewards, but keep the original version of your character on your starting server for PvE, it would be alright. If one cannot gear up or have some other reward for playing, the arena loses a lot of its luster.

I like the dual characters idea, one on each realm would be fun. This would also give the PvP-Crazy players a chance for their "fun part" of the game.
First!

Wouldnt pve only servers make more sense ones without BG's Arenas. Arena only server would fail for aslong as blizzard keep putting good pvp gear available through heroic badges

"If one cannot gear up or have some other reward for playing, the arena loses a lot of its luster."
This sentence right here sums up the entire dichotomy of PvE and PvP. "gearing up" is a nice concept and can be very rewarding, in PvE. However, when applied to PvP, it results in a system that rewards the better player with advantages they (obviously) don't need or even want: if the aim of PvP is to be competitive and about player-skill, any gear/class imbalance detracts from it. Arena-only servers attempt to address this by providing everyone with the same gear options.

the only "gearing" up in pvp should have to do with gaining pvp skill not gaining gear and items to make you competitive. the fact is that gear and class imbalances will only take you so far, then it all becomes about skill. a toon with the best gear in wow played by a noob that just bought the toon will be as much of a free kill as a naked noob. but an experienced player with crappy, mediocre gear will be more than a match for a geared player

Actually, it's quite the opposite. It's trivial to state an experienced player is going to defeat an inexperienced on. It's at the higher levels of competitive play, where differences in individual skill become less and less, difference in gear becomes relatively more pronounced. Since PvP should be about player skill, that (potential) gear difference should be kept to a minimum

And then they can make changes to the Arena game and stats without screwing the PvE players and every one else.

They do have to find a way to seperate PvP and PvE better. Take Rogues for example. They contribute nothing but DPS to a raid, as of such they are supposed to be the top of the DPS as every other DPS contributes something. The problem with this is that in PvP they would have to be very fragile or else they'd be op, this would make them imbalanced and have 0 PvP potential. So they're survival and DPS get balanced for PvP (better survivability, worse DPS). Then when the focus shifts to raids, the survivability no longer matters but the gimped damage remains which leads to a weak PvE class. I have no idea what a good idea would be to solve this dilemna, but I hope they can come up with one as I'm sure that I'm not the only class with this problem.

I like PVE but I like PVP too.
Iam lasy and it sucks that you have to respect everytime you want to change between PVP and PVE.
Blizz should allow 2 alternate Specks. One for PVE and one for PVP. Everytime you want to change the speck, you talk to for ~ 5 Gold and you have PVP speck. When you want to raid, you talk agai and BAMSS you have PVE speck.
5 Gold is nothing, but 50 is too much.
The idee of the Arena servers sounds great, but I think that this will kill WoW. Seperating the whole part pve and pvp content.

Lets do the same with PvP on a carebear server. I PvP when I want to, and hate it when some bored idiots decide to destroy my quest givers and try to get nub's to flag themselves so they can 1 shot them. I am on WoW to play an MMORPG not an FPS and do not want to be forced into PvP cause a designer thinks world PvP is what an MMORPG is about.
And oh yeah, when on my horde, it is no fun trying to get my kids alts ofer to gnomer so they can "see" the dungeon but get flagged running the tunnels and watch a few 70's gank some 20's.

I laugh at the arrogance of people who can dedicate 30+ hours a week to a game having the arrogance to think they should dictate the content. The game would tank if the removed PVP.
What really burns the raiding community is that a great deal, not ALL but a great deal of them get their faces smashed in PVP now.
Life isn't so sweet when you can't one-shot people using Kingsfall.
guesswho? Mar 3rd 2008 10:01AM
this is the end of PVE

I don't see why full time Arena PVP can't keep someone busy in this game. As long as Blizzard has official seasons, some playoffs, etc then it gives people something to work for each season. A normal arena server won't fly because people can do that on their current servers. The appeal of this new venture is the PRO gaming aspect, the prizes, and the recognition. If people want to play some PVE or something during downtimes, they can jump on a live server.
I wish they'd open up both the 3v3 and 5v5 brackets though.
Theserene Mar 3rd 2008 1:25PM
I just wish they'd stop pretending that PvP is the main reason for WoW's existence.
