Playing with your keyboard

I use a Logitech G15 gaming keyboard for main World of Warcraft computer. The keyboard is nice for a lot of reasons:
- The keys are hard plastic and clean easily. I can often be found eating hot pockets (Mom! Hot pockets!) or pizza roles during raids, and it's nice to be able to easily clean the keyboard if I make a mess.
- The keys light up. This is very useful late at night when I turn the lights off.
- The LCD screen is very adaptable. I use the LCD screen to display who is talking over Vent. No more asking "Who just said they need a mob taunted off them?" (of course, if they wouldn't pull agro in the first place or DPS the right target, we wouldn't have that problem now... but that's another article.)
- There are 18 additional programmable keys on the left side of the keyboard.
You want to minimize movement as much as possible. Your left hand is going to be sitting around the WASD most of the time. These keys correspond to the basic movement directions, and occupy a lot of the key presses in a game like WoW. Other keys immediately around the WASD keys are Q E R F Tab ~ 1 2 3 4.
So, let's look at what are some good things to put on each of these other keys:
Q and E strafe left and right, respectively. This is a good thing to leave as is.
The R key is automatically used to reply to people that send you a tell. This is nice in social situations, but not very necessary for raids or game play situations. In my key maps, I often have this mapped to shield block if I'm tanking, or to assist the main assist / main tank if I'm in a DPS role.
The F key is automatically used to assist your current target; or to put it another way, to select the "target of target." This is very very useful for healing and pulling mobs off other people.
The Tab should keep it's default behavior, which is to target the next closest enemy.
The ~ key is nice to use for whatever function you need to press in the middle of a fight. As a tank and someone who often has to mark mobs and lead groups through instances, I use this to trigger my microphone on Vent. I can hold the ~ key down and spam shield block at the same time while tanking and asking the healers to readjust, which is a very useful thing to be able to do.
The 1 2 3 4 keys are defaulted to the first four button on your main action bar. It's a good idea to look at what the most used in-fight abilities are for your class and map them to these locations. Here's a big hint: it's not your "start attacking" command. You only use that once per fight, but you probably use Arcane Shot a lot more. Try making your start attack command be on a "far away" key like = or -. You'll find that all of the sudden you're doing less hand movement during fights.
On the G15 and keyboards like it, there are 18 programmable keys on the left side. These keys are very nice to be able to put macros and key press assignments. For instance, I have one that charges a mob and switches to defensive stance, and then executes a shield slam. I do this using the G15 software, not anything by Blizzard. These keys are less comfortable for the left hand to go to and find easily, so they should be used for "one shot" actions that don't need to be done very often, and not in the heat of battle (ie: /wave).
To wrap everything up, the name of the game in effective keyboard game play is to minimize the movements of your fingers. You don't want to have to reach across the keyboard and find a key to press that does an important action. If you miss, you might wipe the raid at worst, or make the wrong move at best.
What are some tips that you have to maximize your keyboard game play?

I dont really get it why someone would like to get G15! LCD is useless and those 18 additional keys are too far to left to be be used without lifting finger from WASD.
If you need extra keys get ZBoard Merc! (or ZBoard Fang if you dont need/want whole keyboard).

I second this motion. I've been using the Ideazon Fang for 6 months now, and it's great, especially for a southpaw like myself. Most gaming appendages are designed for righthanders, and thus useless for special ppl like me :).

Another ditto for the Fang!

what if you're left handed?

Use ESDF instead of WASD.
* You get more keys within reach
* Your hand rests in the correct possition for touch typing
* Its easier to find keys without looking because there is a little notch on the F
* No one else can use your keyset
* You feel a little bit for l33t than everyone else ;)

What all can you put up on the display screen?

Vent uses the display screen which is good because I cannot recognise some ppl from sound alone.
Also it keeps track of item damage amongst other things, like shows no. of bullets or shards.

I've had a lot of fancy keyboards, but my favorite to date is my current Creative Fatality keyboard. The main reason is because the f-keys are placed so that f1 sits directly on top of 1 and f2 directly above 2 without the normal gap between them all the way to f12. This is good if your not a touch typist like myself and want to stop being a clicker. The blue illuminated keys are easy on the eyes and don't distract either.

"Q and E strafe left and right, respectively. This is a good thing to leave as is."
BAD advice! BAD! BAD!
A and D should be strafe left and right. Q and E should be keybound to more useful abilities.
If you can't master turning with your mouse, use the arrow keys to turn. You're wasting 2 very valuable pieces of real estate there.

I love the g15. I have 2 modes that i use with it. the first one assigns Ctrl/alt/shift 's of 1-6. The second mode I use assigned 7-12. I use that mode when I'm dual boxing 2 chars that don't have the same class type (i.e. when i have my 70 priest helping out my rogue).

I spent some time googling for some good guides on key binding, and I didn't see anything. Can someone link what you have here?
I'd be particularly interested in Resto Druid arena bindings, but anything good would help me get an idea on what to do.

Hai guys
I am a keyboard turner

My problem is i'm used to an ergonomic keyboard, once you get used to them, it's tough to go back to a straight keyboard. I've been trying to find an ergonomic gaming keyboard but haven't found one yet.

No offence seems like your a keyboard moron. Just use a mouse to move Set A and D for streifing Why turn with them? Q and E make great keys for my rogues different ablities. I guess it depends on class, i was playing as my paladin for a main where i just was using WASD and 1-9 And clicking Healbot in raids, When i took pvp seriously on my paladin and rogue i realised i needed to use keys all in 1 spot for my ablities Turning should be done on mouse, Using keys for it is clearly moronic

I haven't shelled out for the G15 yet. I have a backlit keyboard, but I use the Nostromo SpeedPad, so I don't use the keyboard unless I'm chatting in (gasp) text. Everything I need to use is either on my speedpad or my mouse so I haven't come up with a reason to get a big keyboard like that.
Anyone else use the SpeedPad?

I have the G15 too, and have been moving away from using the macro keys much. I used to use them for my standard rotation, but I found that moving back to the home position of WASD was taking too much time.
I'm now using them for symbol assignments, some key raid instructions (Move to me, Stay here, Incoming...), and my charge macro. I like using it for convenience functionality rather than utility functionality.

I play on my laptop when on biz travel and my desktop at home, so having a funky keyboard in only one location is not an attractive option.
Some people have mentioned using shift for hotkeys but no one's given any suggestions that I've seen. As a mage I love binding Blink to Shift+W (more forward), Iceblock to Shift+X (descending / turtling -- defensive), Counterspell to Shift+S (backing up -- defensive), and various other instant twitch spells (remove curse, frost nova, Dragon's breath or Cone of Cold) to A,D,Q,E.
Sharing this methodology across toons is really helpful as well. Offensive spell/ability for walk forward, defensive for walk backwards... even the number keys: my Shammy/Moonkin/Mage all have a short cast direct damage spell at 1, instant damage at 3, long cast at 4. Once something evolves and sticks in your head it's easy to refine it into something that won't differ too much from toon to toon (though my Warrior has to find equivalents of "short cast" and "long cast")

"I can often be found eating hot pockets (Mom! Hot pockets!) or pizza roles during raids"
You mean "rolls".

There is a beautiful device called a "Mouse". You can use it to click on a mob. If you use Right-Click, then you start attacking and dont require wasting a keyboard mapping for that.
Sheesh.
