Omen in Patch 2.4: Even bigger, even better
With Patch 2.4 comes a brand new combat log and logging system, with tons of new features and capabilities. As a side effect of this, any mod or addon that uses the combat log to gather information will need to be rewritten, including the raiders' sidekick Omen.Good news! The author has not been idle since the patch 2.4 test realms have gone up. Luckily for all of you, I have the pleasure of raiding with Antiarc(that little screenshot you've seen so often on WoW Insider is my raid group), so I've been able to get a little bit of a preview. You see that Omen screenshot on the right side there? That's us. In the coming weeks, columnist Sean Forsgren will have something more in-depth and technical for you, but for now, I'm going to walk you through the basics.
The new version of Omen, while remaining light on CPU usage, has gained the ability to track threat on multiple mobs with the same name very accurately, thanks to Blizzard's combat log revamp. In addition to that, Omen 2.0 has a few other new features. Some of them are, as I said, quite technical and won' t mean much to anybody but the modding folk. Sean will handle that quite well, I'm sure. For those of us without extensive mod knowledge, there's still some really great stuff. If you're interested, hop on past the jump and we'll get right into it!
There's a few new modes in 2.4's version of Omen, which at first glance can be a bit overwhelming if you don't know what they are or how they work. That's why I'm here! Please note that the images below have been scaled down as to not break your browser, and Omen's scale is customizable in the game. Additionally, Omen may not appear identical to what it is below once it hits Live servers. Antiarc is constantly working on making it look better. Now, the goods:

And there you go! Omen is still highly customizable. Very little has been removed from the original incarnation of Omen, so all of your old favorite features will still be there. Despite all the new bells and whistles, the CPU usage remains minimal. A few small things haven't made it in yet, such as the ability for Omen to collapse itself once combat ends, but Antiarc assures me that they will be there. Omen 2.0 is not yet available for download, but it's certainly shaping up to be good to go once the Sunwell Plateau hits live servers.
Those of you who are interested in some of the more technical aspects of the new Omen should keep checking back for further information. We won't let you down!

I require threat meters on my raid for tanks and DPS. Healers get away without one if they don't want to. I don't feel it's arrogant to require people to have a threat meter because it establishes a basic level of commitment that should be present even in a casual guild.
The key thing is to use the threat meter as an aid and not a crutch.
"Crutch" players will wait until the threat warning goes off and then stop. This is a bad practice as it either artificially caps a player too low (resulting in sub-standard performance) or too high (noes I aggroz). It's meant to be used like a speedometer, with the driver in control.
DPSing without a threat meter is like driving on a perfectly flat, smooth road while blindfolded. You might be able to vaguely guess what your speed is, but you're always going to be off by a significant percentage. Even then, that won't help you know the speed of the cars around you.
When you say you're topping the damage meters, can you cite an example (such as an anonymous WWS report) or at least the raid instace? Because if it's Karazhan there are a number of things playing into your favor.
1) Lots of AoE packs that SoC shines on.
2) Curator is a very Lock friendly fight (throwing DoTs on between flares, CoD).
3) Illhoof. If you're the Imp Tank, you're bound to be high on the damage meters no matter what.
4) Several bosses involve moving around and shifting position (Opera, Aran, Netherspite, Prince), which favors methods of DPS that can be done on the run or continue without active influence (DoTs, Nightfall or Conflagrate).
These things don't guarantee that you'll top the meters, but they make it significantly easier for a Warlock to excel.

@Freelier
I'm a tad lost on the specifics of Healer Mode as well. I'm a healer myself but this makes no sense without a description like the rest of the bits have. I've come up with several possible things it could be tracking but most of them involve just repeating some of the same information other modes provide.

When you have multiple mobs being tanked you can now see the aggro list for each of those mobs. Previously Omen wouldn't distinguish between the felpuppy on Olm and the MT on King Maulgaur. Now you can split them up and have a much better sense of who's at the top of the threat on what mob.

OOOOHHH YEAH!
AoE Threatmeter :D Now I get a new game to play when tanking :D See how many big red bars I can get on my screen :D This'll be as fun as the 'How many Killing Blow announcements can i get parrot/SCT to display at once' game :D

New Omen. whee.
What I *really* want to know is:
does this new version handle hunter's Feign Death properly, or is it still completely & utterly useless after you hit FD the first time in a fight? Because I find that Omen is clearing my threat most of the time I FD, when in reality my aggro *didn't* reset... and I end up pulling aggro.
Which is not funny when you overaggro on Illidan while Omen thinks you only have 30% threat and he heals back to max health, and you get yelled at & heaped on with crap & insults from the retards you raid with.
Aggrajag Mar 4th 2008 12:28PM
I must be a thicky.
I've used Omen in the past - both with my Holy Priest (only lvl 32) and my BM Hunter soloing with my pet. Everything happens so fast I don't understand how the red bars flashing up and down can help; and I don't know which settings to change to make it easier to comprehend.
Does anyone know a good user-guide for this "must have" mod?
Naix Mar 4th 2008 12:35PM
Must have mods list...
WorldMapInfo
Anything else and you are a noob who can't understand game play.
Here is an if chart to help. Depending of if your a DPS, Healer, or a Tank.
-If mob is not dead apply more damage
-If tank is dropping to fast a)get better tank b)apply more healing
-If you can't hold agro a)respec b)get better gear

Using Omen isn't really for soloing/low level stuff. Threat is very jumpy when the fight is only going to last a minute at most. Where Omen really shines is long boss battles. After a little while, things smooth out and you can watch your threat as a steady predictable thing and account for it.
AlmtyBob Mar 4th 2008 3:32PM
Naix, I seriously don't believe you've ever been in a raid or even a heroic. Either that or you have absolutely awful gear. Omen is mandatory not just for anyone who wants to max their DPS but for anyone running with a tank. Guessing when you need to slow your Aggro doesn't work. You don't just need to factor in your own damage, you need to factor in the number of crits and misses/parries/dodges your tank is getting. At any point during a battle if your tank gets a string of crits you have much more breathing room than if he had some bad luck getting avoided. Hovering your threat at around 90% early on or 115% in a longer boss battle will make a HUGE difference in how much DPS you put out unless you drastically undergear you tank. You don't even need to stare at the bar. Glance down early on for a second or two and later you can just keep your eye on it once in a while. Even if you don't like the bars you can hide it and wait for the red aggro flash (bad idea though). Just install it for your tank's sake so when fighting trash he knows when he's got enough threat on a mob and can switch to the next.
ErsatzPotato Mar 4th 2008 4:08PM
Keeping it somewhere were you can see it out of the corner of your eye instead of looking back and forth to it helps. Also, on default settings it'll flash the screen when you get dangerously high on threat. Can't miss that.
Find something with a lot of hitpoints that isn't terribly dangerous. Stick the pet on it and watch how quickly threat goes up. Now try shooting in different combinations and watch the meter--not the fight.
Once you internalize your "threat curve" it helps a ton, meter or no meter.
Pål Mar 4th 2008 12:33PM
I'm convinced. Once 2.4 is out I'll delete KTM and get Omen instead.
MartinC Mar 4th 2008 6:25PM
LOL, there are people still using KTM??
To me, that's the first sign of an inexperienced raider.
Sub want to join our raid...
Q: "Do you have Omen?"
A: "No, I use KTM."
Boot.
Pål Mar 6th 2008 4:30PM
I've never raided (except killing Attumen recently), so yes, I'm an inexperienced raider. On the other hand I've never been told to get Omen - only vague comments as to how it's better, and since I've believed KTM to tell me what I need (though it's been failing me lately, another reason I'm changing), I didn't think I needed better.
I hate it when I'm expected to know information I have no idea exists.
Srevo Mar 4th 2008 4:00PM
Feign Death being accounted for accurately probably has a lot to do with whether or not the new combat log shows resists (I haven't checked the patch notes recently).
Any errors that you had with feign death were probably because of multiple same-name targets and one of them resisting it.
aaj Mar 4th 2008 5:36PM
When I checked ptr a couple days ago, even /combatlog doesn't show FD at all... ;p
And no, it's not just multi-mob fights I've had problems with, I've had plenty of problems with Omen on single boss fights, like Naj'entus, Bloodboil & Illidan (phase 1).
Ironically, I've also had problems with KTM being 100% accurate, and sometimes I run Omen & KTM side-by-side to compare the levels... and those can be pretty wildly different at times after I FD. Best is when I aggro when both are showing my threats at 10-50%...

Blizzard periodically adds the functionality of certain addons into the standard UI (floating combat text, raid frames that fade when out of range, target casting bars...) because they're just that useful to have. They've said they plan to add a threat meter sometime in the future because threat information is just that important to know as a raider or 5-man runner.
Hugh "Nomad" Hancock Mar 4th 2008 4:49PM
YEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!
Speaking for the extremely small 3-manning community (I think there may, in fact, only be 3 of us), this is the best thing since a combination of sliced bread and the mutt's nuts. An image I'm sure no-one needed.
Roll on 2.4.
Alex Ziebart Mar 4th 2008 5:38PM
aaj: I believe that the reason you have issues with Feign Death is on Blizzard's end. There's no combat log trigger for it, so threat meters have to "guess" when it works.
Felwrathe Mar 4th 2008 6:48PM
Contrary to my near-insane addon obsession, I've always been a bit behind on combat meters.
How does this play into an average, sometimes instancing, sometime soloing with pet, not quite at raiding, Hunter's life?
As it stands, I do a lot of soloing with my pet, and I know once a mob targets me instead of my pet, it's time to disengage or FD. As far as I can tell AoE isn't quite worth it for a hunter, and with single mobs a threat meter doesn't seem to matter much. =/
Imaran Mar 11th 2008 2:39AM
AOE mode FTW!! Thank you, Antiarc, for making the mage's life easier!!! My guild and my wallet will appreciate you very soon!
