Hybrid Theory: What can I do? part 2

Hybrid Theory comes to you yet again from blogger and columnist Alex Ziebart. You're in for thrills, chills, and quite possibly some useful information, but I doubt it.
...Right. Anyway! I'll be detailing the strong points of the tanking and healing specs of our beloved hybrids, and the utility you provide. Should you be looking for a new raid group anytime soon, these will be the things you'll want to keep in mind when asked what you can offer a raid. Having good gear and knowing how to play is also a plus, but this is a start.
Never fear you QQasuals(just kidding!) out there, next week I'll take a step back from the raiding scene and cover some of the new toys in Patch 2.4 and what they mean to you. However, it isn't next week yet, so read on!
Just like last week, I'll cycle through each of you one by one.
Feral Druids: You're right next to the Protection Warriors as far as tanking viability. There's a few encounters that will tear you up(like Illidan himself), but for the most part, you're sitting pretty. I covered a lot of your utility, such as Feral Faerie Fire, in last week's column, but here's what you'll be good for specifically as a tank.
- Excellent Off-Tank - Having the highest base damage between the two rage users, this means you're the most capable of generating threat when not taking damage, and thus most capable of generating threat when not being hit in the face. You'll be very valuable in encounters that require multiple tanks on one target, such as Gruul, Void Reaver and Gurtogg.
- High Armor and Health - Against bosses that hit insanely hard in physical combat, such as High King Maulgar, you're the best candidate out of the tanking classes to take those hits. While crushing blows can be an issue for feral druids, your health, mitigation and high dodge rates do you well.
- Strong Multi-Mob Threat - Your multi-mob threat isn't as strong as a Protection Paladin's threat, but it's a good substitute if a raid lacks one of those. Swipe like there is no tomorrow.
Balance Druids: Moonkin are not tanks. I don't care what your YouTube video says. Go be useful and Moonfire spam something.
Protection Paladin: Of the three tanking classes, you are unfortunately the least desirable. It's going to take some work to convince a raid to take you, but not impossible. Most of your utility isn't exclusive to Protection Paladins, so that makes it even harder. Regardless, here we go!
- Strongest Multi-Mob Threat - AOE Tanking is awesome. When it comes to handling multiple mobs, you're the best. This is most useful in Mount Hyjal, where many of the trash waves are made trivial with a paladin tank. However, most encounters which seem like they're built for Protection Paladins(like Morogrim) are actually more easily tanked by Holy Paladins, so who knows?
- Blessing of Kings - While technically Holy Paladins can reach this, it is a Protection talent. Blessing of Kings gives raid members a flat 10%. Sounds good to me.
- Righteous Defense - Again, Holy Paladins have this, but that doesn't make it less useful on a Protection Paladin. Righteous Defense is a ranged taunt, and though it can be awkward to use without the proper macros, is one of the easiest ways to nab a mob that has peeled off toward a caster or a healer. It's also a good tool to quickly pick up add spawns that appeared on the other side of a room.
Restoration Shaman: Every raid wants at least one of you, if not two. Despite that, you guys seem very, very rare. Which should make searching for a raid even easier, really.
- Earth Shield - Set it and forget it. For ten charges, anyway. Excellent damage buffer on a main tank, and also has alternative applications thanks to the 30% spell pushback resistance it carries. There's no shame in putting Earth Shield on an AOEing mage or warlock, though it should probably be on the tanks most of the time.
- Chain Heal - Pewpew lasers! Chain Heal is awesome, and two of them is even more awesome. This spell makes you, arguably, the best in the game at healing the potatoes of a raid, while most everyone else keeps the meat(tanks) up and running.
- Totems - Restoration Shaman get Mana Tide Totem, which is pretty sweet all alone. Plus you have the usual loadout of Windfury or Wrath of Air, Healing Stream or Mana Spring, you know the deal.
- Ancestral Fortitude - While difficult to keep up on a tank reliably, especially on encounters in which you need to do heavy raid healing, an extra 25% armor on your tanks is greatly appreciated. Holy Priests have a similar talent, but we're not discussing them right now, are we?
Restoration Druids: No, I don't mean Dreamstate. Nobody ever means Dreamstate when they ask for a Resto Druid. Trust me.
- HoTs - Your Healing over Time spells, your HoTs, are your biggest priority. Lifebloom is your primary healing spell, and it is quite amazing. Learn how to use it and practice rolling it on multiple tanks at once, because you're going to be doing a lot of it. Lifebloom = Good.
- Innervate - Mana, yum!
- Tree Form - While not able to be used in every encounter, having the Treeform aura in your tank group is a pretty hefty boost. Restoration Druids really should have no mana problems, so you can afford to be outside of the Healers + Shadow Priest group.
Holy Paladins: The Burning Crusade has not been kind to you. You're basically doing the exact same thing in a raid now as you were three years ago in Molten Core. Luckily, you're still good at that thing, but... yeah. Sorry. You're really good to have along, it's just going to be a boring ride for ya.
- Powerful Single Target Heals - All Paladins really have is single target, direct heals. Luckily, you're one of the best at it. Thanks to the Spell Crit stacking that good Holy Paladins should do alongside their +Healing, you're a power house when it comes to single target heals. The combination of Holy Paladin and Resto Druid does wonders, thanks to the big direct heals from one and the strong heals over time from the other.
- Blessings - Wisdom, Might, yadda yadda. Holy Paladins will generally have Improved Blessing of Wisdom and possibly even Blessing of Kings, which is what your advantage would be over other Paladin talent specs when it comes to these.
- Judgements - Do not underestimate the Judgements of Wisdom and Light. Over the course of a boss battle, Judging Wisdom will regenerate thousands and thousands of points of mana for your raid. It may be difficult to watch all of the time and keep it active, but it's worth it. If you just want to set it and forget it, convince your raid leader to recruit a Retribution Paladin for Crusader Strike!
- Divine Shield - Pretty simple. The ability to go invincible for awhile can be a huge advantage when something goes awry.
- Mm, beefy! - Paladins are generally high armor, high stamina. Being a healer in plate is pretty nice when a mob gets loose. You can keep popping off those heals while the priest next to you keeps popping into angel form.
That's really about it, there's your selling points. Like I said last week, though, there are absolutely no alternatives to being a good player. Just because you know you have these tools doesn't mean you know how to use them. Go out, play the game, learn your strengths. If you need to spend a little extra time in 5-man dungeons of Karazhan to brush up on these abilities, do it. The experience will be worth it. And again, as I said last week, remember that you are a hybrid. This may be as simple as knowing when you need to shift gears mid-combat to pull your raid out of a jam, or as annoying as carrying 2+ sets of gear with you at all times. It's a part of your class, and something you should take in stride.
There you go folks, that's it for my Raiding 101 bit. Boring, I know, but hopefully it was useful to somebody out there. Next week, as I said, I plan on covering some of the new toys in patch 2.4, and that should prove to be quite a bit more exciting. Maybe, if you're nice, I'll make fun of Moonkin again. Otherwise? I'll pick a new victim. I'm looking at you, Enhancement Shammies.

Amazing article:) Someone who put a load of effort in to writing what he doesn't know anything about:) I wish I had the time and the ignorant self esteem.
Pallies tank Illidan, pallies are of course the best Vashj tanks in the game (not to mention Morogrim), pallies can tank all encounters in the game. But like warriors and druids there are encounters where other classes are a better choice.
Don't feel sorry for tankadins - their guild mates know their value. And you have set your mind to never learn anything new. And, hey, thus you only know what you thought you learned earlier.
Great read - mind boggling that anybody play a game this much and just don't want to learn anything about it:)
Thx for making my day.
Blizzard, please buff warriors, give them some love, we don't want to be THAT superior.
I would suggest Improved Last Stand - the warrior takes no damage of any kind for the next minute - and then a 2 minute CD. Then they are back in the game. We can only have so many dps warriors in a raid. Also ZA is a great instance - warriors should have some chance to be at least 2. choice for tanking in ZA. Right now they are are danger and a slowing factor.

"Too many of these comments are being made on subjects unrelated to end-game raiding (aka black temple and hyjal, and sunwell in 2.4), meaning that they have nothing to do with the article."
The article isn't about end game raiding, it's about hybrid capabilities. The author has proven nothing except his knowledge of hybrid capabilities is incredibly poor, yet he seems to think he's some kind of expert. He's not, he's just another biased idiot spouting crap.
The author specifically mentions bosses like Tidewalker and even Maulgar (the introdution to 25 man raiding boss). So what ever gave you the idea it's only about BT, Hyjal and Sunwell? Besides which paladins are tanking in those places and doing just fine.
"Moonkin or Shamans don't tank 25 man bosses. Prot paladins can certainly be successful tanking 25 man bosses, but their single target threat is generally inferior to that of a skilled prot warrior. Anecdotal evidence based on your guild's experiences aside, the math does not lie."
Put your money where your mouth is. You just made an anecdotal claim with absolutely no proof. Show us your math!

1. What people are failing to realise is that wow-insiders columnists are not professional journalists, so they have no standards to live up to. This means when they are pontificating on a subject that they have very little first hand knowledge of, there is zero editorial control to make sure they arnt talking rubbish. (Which on the subject of hybrids, they clearly are at the moment)
2. WoW-insider is owned and run by an ad-driven company. They have no interest in factual accuracy if the viewers of the website increase. This article smacks of sensationalist writing, purely for the purpose of attracting controversy. Its a fairly common tactic amongst online blogs, to write something that you know is wrong, with the attention of attracting more people. I didnt need to read more than a couple of paragraphs to realise this is the probable reason for the article. And yes I am aware that posting my own comments only justifies their purpose ;)
3. Hahaha, 3rd choice? Hahahahahahahahaha. Pull the other one, its got bells on.

To the author, you fail at the game. Stop spreading false propaganda about Paladin tanks. Next time, please do your research before you post shit such as this.

ignoring the viability and least desirability of prot pally's and actually getting back to the article, I do believe that Alex did make a few mistakes on paladins. While he correctly placed blessing of kings under the protection category, he basically wrote it off as something a holy pally could bring as well. ALL paladin's in a raid bring an extra set of blessings, judgments, and auras. On of the commentor's, Adam I believe, said he raids with 6 pally's. While this is an extreme case where the diminishing returns come into play. everyone having might, kings, wisdom, salvation, light, and even sanctuary may not be the most necessary thing in a raid, but I doubt it would hurt them either. A big blessing you forgot to mention is Blessing of Protection. I mention this one separately because it acts differently to every other blessing save only freedom. While warriors have multiple taunts they can use, two I believe though I'm not positive, paladin's have one taunt and one blessing that will keep the healer from taking melee damage, and yet still allow him/her to keep casting heals. In the same vein as blessing of protection if divine intervention, though a paladin would only use this when a wipe CAN NOT be avoided. sure the paladin dies, but the person he DI'd will be completely fine for the next three minutes. All in all it's a craptacular ability that'll only speed up rez times for the rest of the raid if done correctly, and only postpones the DI'd player's death three minutes later if done in the wrong spot, the only plus side to this ability is it'll help lower your repair bill because you won't get the usual 10% loss in durability. Another Paladin ability that you over looked is our one oh shit button, lay on hands. when we use it on ourself we get full health and our mana bar goes to 900, regardless of it's current location. This is a mixed blessing in that, if we are low on health and oom, we get mana back, however, if we happen to have MORE then 900 mana when we lay our hands upon ourselves, cue masterbation joke, then we're S.O.L., we lose the mana. While most argue that it is not as good as shield wall and last stand for warriors, it's saved my bacon more times then I care to count, especially on hogger. While you do mention righteous defense, you missed out on a couple of aspects of this ability that make it shine. While you did mention it was as ranged taunt, you failed to mention that it taunts up to three mobs off of the other player. Secondly, and this is where this ability really shines, you don't cast righteous defense on the mob, it's actually cast on the other player. This does mean that, for ease of use, it's better to have this macro'd so it can be cast like a warrior taunt on the mob, the huge benefit of casting it on another player is that it doesn't matter if the mob is tauntable or not, the mob is still taunted. Paladins can taunt the untauntable, barring resists and whatnot. For all of that, I haven't touched on the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT reason prot paladins took offense to this. The reason the prot paladin's are upset is your article basically is telling prot pally's to shut up and healbot, and IF we actually need to have a pally tank, then a holy specced pally can tank just as well. If there is one thing prot pally's can't stand it's being told to heal instead of tank, well, that and huntards, but I digress. Add to that being told that they are the least desired tanks, and I'm not surprised at the reaction. I read a bit of the commenter's posts, and I believe the true answer to the question of tanking desirability is that the best tank will always be the most desireable, regardless of class.

Wall of text crits you for 9999.
You go blind.
But seriously, please format your posts, it's pretty harsh on a reader to sift through that.

"Hybrid Theory comes to you yet again from blogger and columnist Alex Ziebart. You're in for thrills, chills, and quite possibly some useful information, but I doubt it"
QFT.
seriously, you must be HORRIBLE at paladin tanking, and you're blaming it on the class.
buddy, it's just you.
Webb Mar 10th 2008 6:27PM
Oh and going to maintankadin and trying to pass off your ill-informed opinion as a joke doesnt fool anyone. Hack.
Anenome Mar 10th 2008 5:29PM
What's with this author's attitude? You are obviously ignorant of paladin tanking and have done the class a huge disservice. You're right, I do carry two gear sets on my paladin, but it's not at all what you suggest. The first is for Maintanking, and the second is for Offtanking. We are more than viable maintanks on all but gimmick encounters, we are doing it eve as you wrote this. And our offtank threat generation is perfectly fine, thank you very much, assuming you stack spell-dmg. You'd be surprised what 1,000 effective spelldmg can do for a paladin's OT threat. It's as good as a druids OT threat if not better.
Durenas Mar 10th 2008 5:54PM
Eh, who cares what some dude on a blogsite says? I'll continue to maintank everything in SSC/TK for my guild.

Referring to a comment on the first page by Jekab...
Could someone exactly explain to me why Warriors have a better chance at __surviving__ in Reliquary of Souls? Is it because they have less health? Or because they take more damage in phase three?
Questioner Mar 11th 2008 2:44PM
I can't help but add my voice to the other disgusted prot paladins in the thread.
My Main Tank Progression Kills in 2008:
Rage Winterchill
Kazrogal
Supremus
Gurtogg Bloodboil
Reliquary of Souls P1 & P3
Off tank progression kills in 2008:
Anetheron
Azgalor
Shade of Akama
Mother Sharaz
Illidari Council (rogue)
In 2 piece T4, 2 piece T5. You couldn't be any more wrong. A smart raid will have one of each tank class, with a 4th tank as a dps warr or feral. Choose your MT for the fight based on the fight strategy/requirements.
confedsg Mar 12th 2008 11:35PM
Your seriously retarded, why would you even post this.
Charlie Mar 14th 2008 11:09AM
The Dark Knights on Dalvengyr, our MT is a prot pally named Morass.
We used him and brought it one of our other Prot pally's last night to down Hydross.
