G15 Tanking
Last week I covered playing with your mouse, and playing with your keyboard. In my keyboard post I mentioned that I would share with you all my Logitech G15 keyboard map. For those of you who don't have a G15, the keyboard is unique in that there are 18 programmable keys located on the left side of the keyboard. The keys looks like those pictured to the right. Each of these 18 keys can be assigned three independent functions – based on selecting "M1", "M2", or "M3" at the top of the keyboard. This gives a whooping 54 possible key combinations and functions. I don't use all these though, only the first 18 for most everything, and then the second for some random addon and programming things. So without further ado, here's what my G15 keyboard map looks like:

The "Z -> Intercept -> D" function flips my stance to Berserker Stance, triggers Intercept, and then switches me back to Defensive Stance. This is extremely useful when I have to zip around a large area, like when clearing trash in most raid instances, and pickup a sheeped mob before the ranged DPS can get to it.
The next row down has the three functions "Tank" "DPS" and "S. Dance". The "Tank" function just executes the outfitter command "/outfitter wear TankingStandard" which puts on my standard tanking gear (a solid mixture of Block Value, Mitigation, and Stamina). "DPS" does a similar function in that it puts on my duel wield DPS gear.
The "S. Dance" function executes a stance dance. This is a warrior move in which the tank switches quickly from Defensive Stance to Berserker Stance, pops Berserker Rage, and then switches back to Defensive Stance. The tank literally dances stances in order to become immune to fear, which is one of the things Berserker Rage does. The key placement for the stance dance shortcut is important as well. When tanking, you often times are spamming about four to six skills via the number keys and other keys located close to your left hand. The stance dance key is located in such a way that you can quickly move your left hand over and press the key, without looking at your keyboard, with either your index or middle finger. It takes a little bit of practice, but when you've got it down, you can stance dance just as fast as you can press any other important tanking key, like Shield Block.
The next row down is simple enough and flips around my stances between Battle, Bezerker, and Defensive. The row after that are quick keys to show and hide all the tells I've received, as well as my bags. I use WoW Instant Messenger to help me organize all the conversations I have, and often times people will send me a tell during raids I can't look at until a few moments later. The hide key is placed so that I just have to rotate my left hand about 45 degrees counter clockwise and extend my pinky finger. It works very well during the crunch times that is raids.
The final row of keys have simple volume control. There are boss fights and situations where the sound is a useful feedback for in game events, and other times when it's just plain annoying. These keys get a lot of use.
So there you have it, my G15 tanking keyboard map. What do you think of it? What are some tricks that you've done with your special keys of your G15 or similar keyboard?

If i am not wrong its against the rules to let your G15 keybord do more things then what a macro could do, and yo let your G4 key swap stance, intercept, and swap stance again. this you cant do with just one key.

Something tells me stances are on seperate cooldowns to normal abilities. My friend, while in Battle Stance had a macro that did Charge -> Defensive/Zerker Stance, but I've never heard of stance -> ability -> stance.
As a 'Lock, the only use I can see for those buttons is for the variety of curses we have, or maybe complex control of my pet. However, for general use, it would be awesome to have those 18 buttons for interface use (chat, skills, abilities list, pretty much the right side of the letter keys), switch to a RDFG or TFGH movement set and have pretty much everything as ability binds.

If you can do it with a macro, your allowed to use the keyboard to do it as well. You can't, however, use the keyboards delay functions to get around the gcd on some spells.

Which is what the "'zerker stance > Rage > Defensive stance"-macro on the G15 does.
PeeWee Mar 8th 2008 11:06AM
Actually, my bad. He never mentions if that specific macro is one keypress or two, like my own macro posted below.

The way the G-15 keyboard works you can record your key strokes and with a push of a button you can do that action. IE; Change stance, intercept and change stance again.
Also that is a simple macro as well. Just like the stance dance macro 's that tanks use, when they are tanking fearing mobs.
Blizzard's stance is as long you are at the keyboard and it is able to do the same keystrokes you are not breaking any rules.

Ofcourse this post is for the old version of the G15 keyboard :p
PeeWee Mar 8th 2008 10:51AM
Indeed. If you don't already have one of these beauties, your shit outta luck, unless you can find a used one or some really old stock somewhere.

Yea, that picture is of the OLD G15. However, your not SOL if you want 18 G keys. Logitech now makes a G11 that is similar to the old G15. Found them at Tigerdirect.

As #9 said, raiders that are geared now will never have to even run 5 mans for the most part, the only reason to would be for attunements. (Please god... no TK-like attunement in WOTLK..)

Well that is wierd... I just verified a comment for a seperate post and it posted it on this one...

I use the same keyboard. My G keys are bound to "Shift + #", "Alt + #", and "Ctrl + #", and then mapped to my action bar via Bongos. Really helps with my paladin when quick selecting seals, and for keeping healthstones and potions boung to G9 and G12.

Why do you bother with keybinds for out of combat functions? I tank with a G15 as well, and regardless of whether is paladin, druid, or warrior, the G-keys have one useful contribution for a tank: speed, speed, speed. They put more of your abilities at your fingertips with less modkey dependence. Chat functions are a waste of a potentially valuable keybind.
And for the comments: multiskill macros aren't cheating, just inflexible. If you're using the default UI sequence macros, stompers, etc are handy for getting enough space and keybinds to actually use your skills.
If you sprung for a G15 there's no shortage of keybinds, and who tanks without a barmod?
PeeWee Mar 8th 2008 11:04AM
Well... you could also just tank with
/cast Revenge
/cast Sunder Armor
/cast Shieldblock
/cast [modifier:shift] Heroic Strike
and
/cast [stance:3] Berserker Rage
/cast [stance:3] Defensive Stance; Berserker Stance

That first macro doesn't work anymore. At some point they changed macro functionality so it doesn't just "skip" lines that aren't accessible. So, all that will happen is it will try the first line over and over (i.e. either cast revenge, or complain that revenge isn't ready yet....).

Site note to this... I was at Best Buy (Southpoint, Durham, NC) and was looking at the G15 refresh yesterday. They had it on sale for $85, down from $100.
Not sure if this is global and you can probably find a better price online... but if you're dieing to run into a brick and morter store...
Replex Mar 8th 2008 12:35PM
I bought a G15 about a week ago from Circuit City for $79.99.. but checking now its back up to $85. it is a very nice keyboard, especially for raiding. If you do not know everyones voice for example on Ventrilo, it shows you a display on the keyboard of who is talking.

I use the old G15 keyboard, and I actually have all my hotkeys bound to the G-keys. I've used Bartender to setup a cluster of 18 buttons, each one of them bound to a G-key. Its not that hard to hit most of them while moving with WASD, and its even easier if you mostly control movement with the mouse.

This is blatently against the TOS.
You are using HARDWARE to automate ingame functions.
You do this in several areas,
"Stance Dance"
"Z->Inercept->etc"
You can and will get banned for doing somethign like this. It is very easy to detect due to the predictible MS timing on the 'wait' between key presses.
I would advise removing this blog item, and considering changing your tactics as people have already gotten banned for doing exactly what you're doing.

GG WoWInsider. Let's not go encouraging people to use their G15s in ways that break the WoW terms of use. Anything that gets around the Global Cooldown is known as "automation", and can get you very quickly banned.
