Does Kil'jaedan's defeat animation hint at further lore?
Anyway, I'll be using Black Temple and Sunwell Plateau lore spoilers to explain what I think, so If you don't mind that and want to speculate along with me, please, do join me after the jump.
We know that Kil'jaedan is supposed to be half-summoned through the Sunwell, and these animations seem to hold that out. he appears only from the waist up, so we can assume he's otherwise submerged in the Sunwell, and probably trying to crank out a last bit of energy, possibly by siphoning it from Anveena, to completely cross over. Luckily, 25 intrepid heroes show up at the last minute to stop him. Now, what is most intriguing to me is that he doesn't really appear to definitely die. Instead, his "defeat" animation suggests that he is simply sucked back into the Sunwell, apparently returning from whence he came. It is certainly possible that the Sunwell simply destroys him, but the way he sort of slides back in would suggest to me that he's being pulled back through the portal. His scrabbling at the sides of the portal, then snatching at his amulet, might support that reading. He's not in the throes of death as much as he's trying to keep his hold in this world.
Now, honestly, I'm not against the killing of previous lore figures such as Illidan and Kael'thas. I believe that every character comes to their end sooner or later, and our characters have done enough in the world to deserve a chance to actually emerge victorious over enemies such as them. That said, I know quite a few people have expressed dismay over killing off characters like this, so perhaps this is Blizzard's nod to them, allowing Kil'jaedan to be defeated without actually dying. Of course, the Burning Legion is pretty much the biggest of the big bads in Warcraft lore, so it may be that Blizzard wants to save Kil'jaedan for a final showdown with Sargeras somewhere down the line, or something to that effect. Either way, I'd say we can't count Kil'jaedan out yet.
Another interesting thing to note is that his amulet apparently flies off, and while he desperately grabs at it, it seems to stay in Azeroth while the rest of him is dragged down into the portal. This, of course, leads one to wonder if the amulet itself has any importance. Is it simply a really uber necklace with lots of spelldamage, or is it something more? Kronack wonders if it might be related to the Demon Soul. That would seem unlikely to me, since last we knew of it, it had been destroyed, and it was a toy of Deathwing's rather than of the Burning Legion's. Still, it could be something that operates under a similar principle. Perhaps it will show up on Kil'jaedan's loot table and we'll learn more about it then. It would be pretty cool if the Demon Soul wasn't as destroyed as we thought, and Deathwing lent it to Kil'jaedan, but a plot twist like that would be a longshot, I think.
What do you think? Am I reading too much into a few boss animations, or do you have theories of your own?

Kiljaden is not "killed" in this sunwell instance. He simply gets sent back to where ever he came from, ready to battle again in which ever expansion we get to finally fight him and all his glory...(lvl90 or 100 god only knows) The scarab is what you loot after the encounter like #3 mentioned....Lets not read into any of this........no old gods...no inter-dimension necklace..no flux capacitor...just phat lootz
Skuling Mar 10th 2008 4:35PM
I beg to differ, what demon overlord is complete with out a flux capacitor? That would just be madness!
Ruzgob Mar 10th 2008 4:29PM
Good analysis, but I think it's more interesting to ponder about what the encounter would be like from this video.
For example, if he's half-stuck in the portal, he presumably can't run around, so he might not be a typical tank n' spank. Perhaps something more like C'Thun or Aran.
Also, with the amulet floating away from him, just beyond his reach, perhaps some benevolent NPC is levitating it away from him when weakened, severing his tie to Azeroth. So we might see an NPC in the fight, perhaps a Naaru or this Aveena character, who's necessary to defeat Kil'Jaeden.

not related to animation, but do you think kalecgos could have some connection to malygos?
I hope they have some lead into to WotlK somehwere in the sunwell, that would be pretty awsome.
Super Guest Man 9000 Mar 10th 2008 9:44PM
Umm....yeah. They're blue dragons. Malygos is the head of the Blue dragon flight.

For practical reasons, I can see why the amulet is nice. It allows Kil'jaden to slip away alive back through the Sunwell, while leaving behind something sparkly that raiders can go loot their fabulous purples off of instead of his cadaver.
There's a lot about it I don't get though. I assume it's the object that he's using to tunnel through from his side of the portal, which is why things go so drastically wrong after he loses it, but why the heck does it actually pop off and float in the air (tauntingly) long enough for him to deliver his catchy one-liner and submerge? Is it alive, or was it wrested from his claws by someone?
And if that's the case, who? I think we've seen text bits that hint at Anveena and Kalecgos are going to be involved in the encounter, so it might be them, or many even another big name in the lore...

Some of the sound files indicate that Velen and Lindarin show up at some point too. Velen at least is a caster of not-insignificant power (being one of the three that Sargeras originally reached out to), he'd probably know what that amulet is and be able to magically float it over or something.

Hold on, didn't the original lore say that Kazzak opened the Dark Portal by using some unknown artifact?
We may have found said artifact methinks.
Skuling Mar 10th 2008 4:45PM
Now when u mention it, that is kinda possible. But then again I have a hunch that what kazzak used to open the dark portal again might have been the book of medivh. Where did that ol'book go anyway?
In the start dosent his necklace look like a skull with some yellew stuff in its mouth?.. Maybe its some ones skull? Maybe some one of great power have recently been defeated and his Preacious pet-Skull have been up for grabs.. but who? who I ask have had a powerfull skul in heís posetion and recently been defeated.. I guess we'll never know... xD

Whatever the necklace is, it seems to be new. He isn't wearing it in TFT, though there is something similar on a one of the illustrations posted on WoW Wiki.
When I first saw it, I thought maybe it had something to do with how he can stay in Azeroth. Like once its knocked off, he'll get sucked back through into the nether.
It probably is simply a powerful relic of some sort. It could be on his loot table, and I'm sure that's where you get your loot from. After all, once he's sucked back through, there is no body to loot. Unless there's a chest in the room you use instead, this seems as likely to be the loot box as anything.
It also may be his "proof of death." Like other bosses have heads to turn in, or Kael has his sphere, Kil'jaeden might have a demonic necklace you turn in for buffs or loot.
The biggest problem to this speculation is that nobody has defeated him, even on the PTR, so nobody knows one way or the other outside of the sound files, buffs, and animations how the fight will work.

I noticed a few things rewatching that video and here's my insight to it.
One when Kil'jaeden first rises from the portal he doesn't have the pendant around his neck. Obviously it would appear to be something he gets the moment he arrives in Azeroth. Going based on that theory I would assume that the pendant contains Anveena/Aveena the human avatar of the sunwell itself. The very thing two Blue dragons nearly lost their lives trying to protect. Which oddly enough was turned into human form by the main consort of the Red Dragon Queen (bad krasus).
it's either that or they just wanted something cool :D guess we'll find out soon enough right?

The animations aren't doing him justice. He's the leader of a vast army of demons which has devastated thousands of worlds and killed or enslaved trillions of beings. I think it would be pretty lame if we actually killed him in this encounter. Maybe 2 expansions later, and then after that we fight the Old Gods or whatever Harbinger Skyriss in Mech alludes to. And yeah, the amulet is probably just a badass necklace or trinket for casters, and Kil'jaeden was a bit annoyed that he dropped it. Or maybe it's a quest item.
Medievaldragon Mar 11th 2008 1:17PM
This amulet could be the clue we have gotten all along since Burning Crusade launched. Lord Razzak stole an item from Mount Hyjal -- according to the World of Warcraft RPG Book that allowed him to open the Dark Portal to escape back to Outland.
Maybe this amulet is that artifact used by Razzak, and ultimately given to his master, Kil'jaeden. Another possibility could be the never explained quote by Razzak. He babbles something about the Dragon shards. As if they were attempting to recreate a new demon soul. If so, this medallion that drops from Kil'jaeden could be made of such dragon shards.
willferal Mar 11th 2008 7:39PM
It's spelled Kil'jaeden btw.
Anveena IS the sunwell, so I'm pretty sure he's actually not inside a sunwell...maybe some kind of portal. Supposedly she sacrifices herself to seal him off.
