The great Panda debate

I must admit that I also found no law specifically prohibiting violence against pandas in the virtual world. However an entry in China View and several other online publications pointed to proposed legislation in Chendgdu China that would curb exploitative panda imagery. The legislation was prompted by Zhao Bandi's presentation of suggestive panda-inspired stylings made waves during
The article was dated November 23, 2007, and claims to have confirmed the proposed legislation with the Chengdu Municipal Committee of the National People's Congress, in west 's
So it looks like both posters are correct. There is no specific, Chinese law banning killing pandas in video games. In the future there be some official legislation that limits the use of panda imagery in video games in the
Baluki suggested that Panderens could be added to the game but disabled in Chinese copies of the game. Currently in Chinese copies of the game the Undead models do not have exposed bones. The difference between these two examples is that the graphic for bones or no bones is purely cosmetic and does not have a major impact on the game. Disabling or enabling Pandaren characters would probably have major implications for the game. Possibly if Pandaren were replaced with another race such as Naga in Chinese versions of the World of Warcraft, it may work.

I'll swing this to a more American standpoint: What if we had a race called Puppies or Kittens? Now, when you raid a small town equal to Goldshire, all you will see is screenshots posted about dead Puppies and Kittens. I'm sure a lot of the female WoW players may go, "awwww cute" when they hear about the new race, but when they see those screenshots, they'll be pretty turned off to the game.
I can see why Blizzard would not want to put the pandas back into the game. Over 3 million people will not have the chance to play WoW because they play it in a video game cafe' ordered to stop supporting WoW by their government.

GL of ONE WORLD NO CATS

" I'm sure a lot of the female WoW players may go, "awwww cute" when they hear about the new race"
Um... sexist stereotyping, much?

I said "may go."

the changes done to the undead models in chineese version of the game, weren't purely cosmetic. the actual models geometry was atlered, and so their skins.
with pandas, however, it can be done by changing basic skin (the one before clothes applied to the model), from white/black fur to something else. as a result you will get humanoid bear and noone in china would be able to say that blizzard somehow twisted their pandas.
also, note, that so far, pandas was merely a joke started as a personal drawing. if blizzard decide to make them official, they might as well work out the design needed to make china public accept them.
personally, i believe that pandas not in the game so far, because there is no place them. both geographically and lorewise. TBC is about draenei and blood elves, WotLK is about Arthas and deathknights stuff. nothing for panda interest :) but if next expansion gonna be about south seas, i think it will be a great chance to see them as playable race. i mean - pirates, adventures, uncharted lands, all the cool stuff.

Personally not interested in being a giant panda in Japanese clothes. The tauren are silly enough, though I've grown to love 'em.
But Come On! Giant pandas? Are the people drooling over the idea the same ones that name their hunter cats "OMGKITTYMEWMEWMEW", and share the same fascination with all giant anthropomorphic critters. Go play Furcadia.
Oh yayz! Please add Bucky O'Hare and Usagi Yojimbo too! CAN I HAVE SPNGEBOB?! PLEASE SAY YES!
Oneiroi Mar 10th 2008 11:54AM
That was one reason I never played Taurens. I got sick of going through the kinda silly Native American stereotype culture in game.
But I do like the way they look and wish I had a high level Tauren, Oh well.
Alchemistmerlin Mar 10th 2008 11:54AM
So you're attempting to say that anyone who thinks any anthropomorphic character is cool is a furry?
Don't you have a "chan" to be trolling?
Blackhorn Mar 10th 2008 12:14PM
I think anyone who blindly supports adding pandas to this game is short-sighted and under 20. Is that so wrong?
There are plenty of better options that feature races that are already heavily tied into that thing called "lore" and "story" that some people are interested in.
And for the record, disagreeing with your opinion does not equate to trolling.
Alchemistmerlin Mar 10th 2008 12:54PM
Making the blanket statement that everyone who disagrees with your point of view is under 20 is, however, trolling.
Blackhorn Mar 10th 2008 1:48PM
"Alchemistmerlin has defeated Blackhorn in a duel."
Is that what you're expecting to see? Stop nitpicking. I voiced my opinion based on what the idea of pandas in WoW conjured up, combined with what type of person would be excited about the idea.
Sorry for trolling.

Thank you for the article. I find one glaring contradiction, however. The fact that the legislation against the misuse of the panda image is dated November 23, 2007, then why haven't we seen Pandaren before then? There must be another reason, and I don't believe that this legislation is it - although it is probably a symptom of the real problem.
Also, I wonder whether or not Blizzard was in trouble for the inclusion of Pandaren in the Frozen Throne expansion to Warcraft 3.
mattarin Mar 10th 2008 12:02PM
i have an idea. make them black with white instead of white with black and call them pandarens.
Chris Mar 10th 2008 12:02PM
Why couldn't they have Panderan, and in the Chinese change the name to "Bearpeople" and make them colored to be a solid color bear like brown or black. That would seem easy enough. Problem solved.

As a native American I am keenly aware that Tauren are modeled off of a patrionizing stereotype of my ethnicity...
But that said, this is the only game I can play, pretty much, where I'm not being asked to kill people modeled off of my ethnicity. Let's face it, Orcs in modern D&D fantasy are modeled off of the stereotypes of my ethnicity that were promulgated in US media from 1492 all the way up until the 1960s...
To have a positive stereotype, even a patronizingly incorrect one, is a pleasant breath of fresh air.
So I love playing Tauren, followed by Orcs. :)
And I'm 1/4 Chinese, and yeah, I'd jump on the chance to play a Pandarin too. :p
SaintStryfe Mar 10th 2008 12:38PM
While Tauren Language and Architecture is definitely themed around Native Americans, I always got a bit of an African vibe from the clan system they seem to have.
Oh well, maybe that's just too much study in that area.
I don't see how it's patronizing though - it seems extremely respectful. Until the Draenei, and perhaps even after they were introduced, I'd say the Tauren are the most honestly good race in the game. They just want to live in prosperity it would seem to me.
If you want patronizing, go watch Starz Westerns Channel for a few minutes. I cannot believe what they got away with just 40 years ago in some of these films against Asian, Native American and Hispanic peoples.

who cares if they are based off ur race? i mean we have humans in the game OMG we have to kill all of our own race! ahh and the humans are white and black no one is taking this as a racail thing , taurens yes they have the "native" theme panderins have the "orient" theme but does this matter?
Stoneblade Mar 10th 2008 3:49PM
I'm glad someone did their homework, regarding that issue. I've seen so many people spout off that legality issue, like it was bible truth, for ages...
That being said, all I can say is... Meh.
I'd take Ogres over Pandaren, any ol' day of the friggin' week.
Geoff Mar 10th 2008 12:55PM
Um why don't they just chsnge it to a different type of bear....?
