WoW Things Considered interviews Vis Maior
As scheduled, our good friend Duncor (and his co-host Cadwallion) on WoW Radio's WoW Things Considered podcast sat down for an interview with three guildies from Vis Maior, the guild that's been rolling through the PTR so far. It's a good interview -- Duncor and Cadwallion go through Vis Maior's (not Vis Major) history, how they've moved on to the PTR and begun raiding there, and what they think of the new content.
It's interesting to hear not only from a guild that has been around for a while, but is just now coming into the spotlight. And it's also cool to hear what the GMs are doing for the guilds testing the new content on the PTR -- they've deathtouched trash a few times, and even spawned "flaskators," which are NPCs which will give out consumables and other raiding standbys.
They also tackle the debate of whether "world firsts" actually count on the PTRs. Vis Maior does agree that PTR kills don't necessarily count if they're just being tested, but a world first kill of a "final" version of a boss should count. Duncor and Cad don't press them on this, unfortunately, but I'd disagree -- the only way you know a boss is final is if it is on the live realms, so only live realms should count. Still, Vis Maior sound like a great bunch of people (they sound like they really love to raid, which is always good for a high-end guild), and what they've done so far on the PTRs is definitely impressive. Kudos to them, and nice job to WoW Radio on the interview.

But then why would a Live kill count if said guild had already killed the final version on the PTR and had loads of practice. The existance of a PTR where you can fight early versions of the bosses and learn the encounter basically invalidates any notion of world firsts whatsover. Neither PTR or Live kills mean a damn thing in terms of skill.

A better question would be... what are their feelings on raiding in WoW, achievements, and how does PTR testing factor in? Obviously any guild making progress on the PTR will have less and less "fresh" content to tide them over between 2.4's release and WotLK. All this seems to be a hot topic now among the raiders after Risen made their recent statement.

I think that only live counts as world first. First of all, as you note, the only way to know if it is in final form is when it goes live. Second,
"GMs are doing for the guilds testing the new content on the PTR -- they've deathtouched trash a few times, and even spawned "flaskators," which are NPCs which will give out consumables and other raiding standbys"
When GMs are killing your trash and spawning "flaskators" I can't see how your accomplishment is on the same level as that on live when no such things are going to happen.
just my $0.02.

When I played EQ on the Quellious server there was a guild named , they were such pricks. I'm not sure if its the same group of people, but they're Alliance so they're most likely pricks as well.

Vis Maior is one of the top guilds in wow, they are a constant user of WWS.
If you look at the the wwsscoreboard
http://www.wwsscoreboard.com/wwsview.php
You'll see they output some of the (in some cases THE) highest dps recorded by wws on some bosses. When they first hit the PTR, I was not surprsied they were one of the first guilds to start downing bosses.
Grats to them for gaining popularity, I remember talking to them about their website crashing from allt he bandwidth usage :).
