Blue poster Belfaire explains Blizzard's stance on multiboxing
Multiboxing, the process of one person playing multiple characters on multiple accounts at one time, usually by the use of multiple computers (thus the term) and macros that can be activated on all accounts by the push of a single button, has most recently seen coverage here on WoW with our 2-man Karazhan report. The act of multiboxing is one that has been the subject of some debates, mostly centered around whether or not it violates the EULA. Those in favor of multiboxing can breathe easier today, as Blizzard poster Belfaire has stated in no uncertain terms that Blizzard has no problem with the practice in a post on the customer service forums.
In short, he says that the advantages of multiboxing are no different than the advantages offered by normal grouping. Since multiboxers can be damaged, feared and CC'd as easily as separate people playing separate accounts, and since they can't do anything the same amount of characters couldn't do when played by different people, there is no reason to consider it an unfair advantage in PvP or PvE. He also answers quite a few specific questions posed by thread starter and multiboxer Velath that clarify why Blizzard accepts Multiboxing and does not consider it an exploit or an unfair advantage.
For example, he clarifies that using one keyboard to trigger macros on multiple accounts is not exploiting, but using that same keyboard to make a Fireball spell go off whenever it is availible is. Switching between windows or boxes to issue commands? Not exploitation. Using a bot program to make those windows run automatically? Exploit. In short, just like with people running one account, automation of a character via a third party program is Illegal. Setting up shortcuts to use macros or using gaming mice or keyboards (such as those in Adam Holisky's recent series of articles)is legal, and something that has always been fine with Blizzard no matter how many accounts the person in question is playing.
I certainly applaud this stance by Blizzard, even if I don't quite see myself doing the whole multiple rig setup. Admittedly, I am somewhat biased, as back in my Everquest days, I was about the only member of my small guild that didn't multibox, and was always greatly appreciative when someone when bring out their tank and healer multibox team so we didn't have to worry about who was going to fill those roles. Either way, it looks like Multiboxing is here to stay. So the next time you curse that 5-box Elemental Shaman arena team that just Chain Lightning'd you into next week, just remember that you can't call them illegal. However, you can still thank your lucky stars that they weren't Restoration Druids.

i Just started Multiboxing with my main being a 56 hunter. I got my alt to lvl 20 and just parked him inside of SM Cath. For the most part i have been powerleveling him. After 3 runs he dings 8) However i only plan on doing this to make twinks not for arenas or pve. Just to farm gold my alt twink (about 100g per hour.) Hooray i'm not going to prison! On a side note. The advantage of having the Hunter as my main is very evident. Such as Aspect and my pet hamering down any unwanted aggro from my low lvl alt. Cheers!

Meh, if someone wants to shell out double, triple...5x the monthly fee to multibox, be my guest. It's their money. 5 accounts, on the monthly plan for a year would be ~$900. On the 6-month plan, $780.
Truckin Mar 13th 2008 12:20PM
Everyone always ogles about the monthly cost.
By the time the monthly costs catch up to the initial investment in hardware I'll have moved on to another MMO. For those who can afford five boxing the monthly fees are trivial. I spent more on networking gear than a years subscription for my team.
In regards to Blue giving their supposed "blessing", its old hat. Hell there are Blue employees who multibox. As for the EULA, its always been a matter of who/what is in control and being able to actively see all the screens that are active. (does not apply to toon that is /follow in a background screen as long as the following toon isn't doing anything but)

I just thought though - I would definitely like being able to do some daily quests 5 at a time! Cha-Ching!

Multiboxing in arena? Haven't witnessed it myself but I ran into a 5-shaman group in EotS in full season 3. 4 clearly autofollowing the other and throwing around 5 chain lightnings to slaughter alliance. Obviously he's doing ok in arena, and why not? Chain lightnings for multiple enemies, any of the shaman can heal another or self in a pinch. I don't get how he controls all 5 without some form of botting though, that's where I expect it to violate EULA.
guesswho? Mar 13th 2008 10:06AM
probably using keyclone, it is 3rd party software that binds keys to multiple pcs, so he hits chainlighting or chainheal on one and that replicates to all the others

We encountered a 4 shamman boxer team yesterday.
Couldnt do anything.
The best i could do was seed them, they all exploded for a bunch of damage, healed themselves easy.
Before i could even get a fear going they all casted on me and instagibbed me. Real fun.
I do see a problem with that, as my whole team felt cheated on. Playing a game where it feels like your opponent is cheating is making the whole experience less fun and driving people away from it.
Marcus Mar 13th 2008 12:27PM
Would your team have felt cheated if it was 4 people playing 4 shaman and they played the exact same way? Why get upset when it's one?
I've tried multiboxing. It's...ok, nothing really earth shattering. I gave up on it because it was boring.

I can see it being a problem in pvp. Not illegal, but immoral; it's player controlling toon vs player controlling toon, not player controlling toon vs five player controlled toons. Sort of breaks the team work aspect out of pvp far more than it does for pve in my eyes.
That said, it's still awesome. I'll campaign to keep it all if they ever try to take it away.
bonse Mar 13th 2008 10:42AM
but then there is a down side, when you hit howl of terror thats 5 howl of terror cool downs for the effect of one, where as five locks controlled by individuals can use howl of terror one after the other.
hennifer Mar 13th 2008 10:32AM
I have my suspicions that Blizzard employees regularily dual/tri/quad/etc box. They claim their 'leet tech skillz' make it not automation.
To each their own!
Gargoyle Mar 13th 2008 10:46AM
In Dark Age of Camelot there were tons of "Buff Bots". Not played characters per say, just another toon on a seperate box to buff your group before they ran Emian Macha looking for some RvR action. It got so bad Mythic had to add a max range to the buffs.
Buff Bots were a big reason DAOC was so successful.

Multiboxing seems like an obvious tactic for people who want to create level 70 accounts just to sell them off, which is still against the EULA, I'm fairly certain. While I can see the merit in the "it's their money" argument, at the same time, it seems like Blizzard condoning multiboxing is giving an obvious tool to those people who do sell accounts.
bonse Mar 13th 2008 10:49AM
now this is my concern when seeing 5 identical chars on follow, however seeing as there is no way to prove the intent there is little that can be done until the account or char is actually sold or at least advertised for sale
the subject does interest me, but isnt something i could actually be bothered to do, my main interest would be to see if it could be done with chars of different classes to make up a typical group, for instance 5 boxes with the same button bound to sunder armour, flash heal, frost bolt, shadow bolt and sinister strike with target or target of target macros.
would would the threat be too much for the tank to hold?
Jennifer Mar 13th 2008 1:08PM
Do you honestly think people who have spent the time, money, and effort into multiboxing are going to sell their characters for less than half of the american federal minimum wage?
I've done the math for you:
http://v-boxing.net/blog/vboxing.php/2008/01/28/illogical-account-selling
Furthermore, multiboxers get reported for "suspected botting" on a daily basis -- if they were honestly doing something nefarious, they'd easily be caught long before they ever ding 70.
Rual Mar 13th 2008 10:50AM
I would multi-box if I could afford it. : (
I have no problem with it, most of the people who do it are doing so because they don't want guild drama or PUG for instances or group quests.
juicyjuice Mar 13th 2008 10:53AM
Frankly, Im floored by the amount of people/ amount of support that support this practice. This is like a quarterback throwing 5 footballs at a receiver figuring he'll catch at least one. Or a hunter (not Teh sexy Night Elf Kind, the West Virginia mullet kind) hunting squirrel with a 50mm smooth bore cannon. Yeah you can do it, but its not an accomplishment.
C'mon.
This is like Darth Vader flying an entire squadron of Tie Fighters at once against a single X-wing. Youre not Darth Vader, stop thinking you are.
Oh, and if you are Darth Vader, come find me on Steamwheedle, I want a duel.
