I remember the night of January 15, 2007.
I stood outside a game store in the bitter cold anxiously awaiting the doors opening so we could get our hands on a shiny new copy of the
freshly launched Burning Crusade.
There were probably thirty people there, and of course the conversation was all about
World of Warcraft.
The air was tense between proud members of the
Alliance and the Horde. Most players
identify strongly with one faction or the other.
It was strange to me how the faction rivalry crossed over into the real world.
I play Horde. I've been known to wear a t-shirt that says "Real Women Roll Horde." I've tried playing Alliance characters, and it just doesn't work for me. My real-world friends who play WoW also play on Horde side. I gravitate toward fellow followers of Thrall. Recently I've started a new job where a number of people play the game. Much to my surprise, I've found some Ally players that I actually like.
There seem to be a lot of stereotypes of players on either faction: Allies are kiddies and goody-goodies; Hordies are bloodthirsty, basement-dwelling jerks who don't even play nicely with each other. If I come across someone who seems like a total stooge, the thought, "That guy probably rolls Alliance." crosses my mind. I've discovered that these are merely overgeneralizations and there are great players and great people on both sides. Maybe I won't pick fights with chicks who play gnome when Wrath of the Lich King is released.
What's your experience with faction rivalry beyond Azeroth?

When I started playing wow, a friend got me into the game so I played the faction he was, Horde, on the server he was on. I love the game, and have played at least a little of every race and class. Horde charaters just seem to fit me. Yes I have alot of faction pride, and always help guildies that are getting ganked, or fellow horde in the area have alliance harassing them. I have always played PVP servers, I feel it adds a certian excitement to the game. I never go looking for a fight though, and if allys are in the area, I leave them alone, and will save their butt if they get to much on them. And horde frusterate me sometimes too, like when I was grinding Timbermaw rep for like a month for the epic trinket. I was in Felwood euthanizing the furblog races, sometimes alliance would be there too grinding. We would watch out for each other, grinding for like 2 hours. No problem, Then a horde shows up ganks and gets spanked, yells at me for not helping. Umm...My priority was rep, if I were to help on a fight he started, a war would probably start and for another 2 hours, instad of rep I would be killing alliance. Not what I wanted. I don't pick fights I can't handle. If I do get my butt kicked, I walk away proud or try to hold my own. I love pvp when it is balanced. I do not respect any player repeatedly killing players 10-30 lvls lower than them. whatever faction. Makes you look weaker. I see alliance doing that, often, when lvling my alts. Maybe thats just because most of my alts are horde. I hope to god that horde has not stooped to that level. But yes Horde blood runs through these veins.

I figure I pay my money, I have 4 Ally's and 4 Horde, mostly on PvE servers but I have a couple on PvP servers. I want to see all the quests, all the instances. I don't feel like there should be any hostility. And if it happens oh well, I ignore it

The generalizations are just stupid. If you roll an alliance or a horde character, once you get to 70 and either pvp or raid, you'll find great players on both sides. I could care less which side a person is on. A friend of mine is crazy about horde. He took a couple of 70's up on my alliance server and still hates PVP'ing b/c he has to kill horde and if they raid our town he won't attack them. It's really sad. I have horde and alliance characters and I play for fun. It's not safe to mix up your emotions too much with the real and virtual worlds. Next thing you know, you'll be 10 years older and wonder why you didn't hang our with your spouse and play with your kids more. Sorry this turned into a "wow will ruin your life rant."

Alliance lore is more appealing to me, including quests and NPCs. That's why I play Alliance, and after I invested so much time in playing Alliance, I can't see myself starting all over again on the horde side, where I know none, and leaving all my friends on the "bur" side of lol :)

All I know for sure is that I LOVE orcs. They are the Klingons of Wow. How's that for mixing metaphors?

Just see the trend in the comments here. Alliance players try to compromise, say that faction doesn't matter, try to bring some peace. Horde players keep inciting rivalry and insulting the Allies.
I'll stick to my Alliance characters and stay away from the bloodthirsty primitive species. Kidnapping Naarus and developing new plagues is just something that doesn't appeal to me.
