I don't think using the in-game system has any "noob"ish ness about it. On my server, *at the heroic level,* you need if you need, pass otherwise or greed if no de'er. De'ers either need or greed, and mostly there are rolls for each shard in pugs, but sometimes groups wait until the end. Crafting patterns and nethers someone usually calls out to need or greed. Some lower level pugs don't encourage needing -- I think because newer players don't understand always what benefits them, or what will benefit them only a touch but some other toon a lot. Many times for purple heroic loot, someone asks before needing. Or people ask if need is ok for off-spec. And sometimes, even in a pug, someone will ask if they can solo roll on a nether for a particular crafted piece, and the individuals discuss.
