Phat Loot Phriday: Battleworn Tuskguard

I'm making another claim, so armorsmiths, get ready to jump in the comments and prove me wrong: This helmet is the highest non-shield armor item in the game. We've covered some nice shields before (and those are pretty much all Armor), but this helm from Zul'Aman has the highest armor value of a non-shield piece of armor that I could find. Update: Yup, commenters have a few pieces with more armor on them (although, yes, PLP only deals with gear on the live realms, so 2.4 gear doesn't count yet). I'll get you next time, readers!
Name: Battleworn Tuskguard (Wowhead, Thottbot, Armory)
Type: Epic Plate Head
Armor: 1355
Abilities:
Getting Rid of It: Disenchants into a Void Crystal, and sells to vendors for 7g 30s 2c. You may want to keep it around for Halloween, though -- that's a troll face that only a troll mama could love.
Name: Battleworn Tuskguard (Wowhead, Thottbot, Armory)
Type: Epic Plate Head
Armor: 1355
Abilities:
- +60 Stamina
- Red, Yellow, and Blue sockets, with a socket bonus of +6 Stamina
- Equip: increases your Dodge rating by 23, shield block rating by 40, and block value of your shield by 51
- Word is going around that this is going to change after patch 2.4, however: the shield block rating will be dropped, and the helm will instead raise defense rating directly by 40. That's not confirmed yet, and even if it's been seen on the PTR, there's no guarantee it'll make it to the live realms.
- But either way, this is a great tanking helm. In some situations, it even rivals T6, but the best part about it is that you don't even need 25 people to get it. (see below)
- Plus, it does look pretty cool. At first I thought that was a bird of some kind, but instead it's a Troll's face, complete with jutting tusks. If you like the tribal look of the Zul'Aman gear (and I do), you'll like this helm.

try searching "brutal gladiator's" under plate armor at wowhead.com.

I believe the Savior's Grasp chestpiece that drops off Archimonde has the highest AC of a non-shield item pre 2.4. It's got 1886 armor. The most AC on a helm would be the Faceplate of the Impenetrable off of Illidan with 1532 AC.

Sorry, wasn't thinking about 2.4... vengeful gladiator's pieces also have higher armor.

Neat item Mike, but there are quite a few items i found after only a minute long search on wowhead, that have higher armour and are non-shields.

Dear lord, NElf ears look awful in helmets.

... The Vengeful Gladiator's Plate Chestpiece has 1700-1800 armor.

With a couple of filters on a WoWHead search, you can get a good list of non 2.4, non-shield items with greater than 1355 armor. Looks like there are 95 of them:

(sorry for the giant link)

"So even if you don't have more than 9 friends to raid with..."
I haven't got more than 1 other friend to party with, let alone 9... :(

No meta slot really, REALLY hurts any helm.

This helm is a great effective health helm, and if you throw on a ZG enchant it also works as a great threat gen piece as well (and gives it even more health). T5 is still better as an avoidance piece though (same armor value too), which you'll need in Black Temple more. However, in fights where effective health is key, such as Kael and Vashj, this helm can't be beat (until Illidan's helm).

Actually, the lack of a meta socket is what makes this helmet better than any other helmet before Faceplate of the Impenetrable (with the *possible* exception of T6; in the patch, however, this will completely destroy the Onslaught helmet). A meta socket generally replaces 2 sockets. The only tank-viable gem until 2.4 is 18sta/5% stun resist. The stun resist part is unimportant and unreliable, so we are looking at a 18sta gem. However, this helmet has 2 normal sockets, instead of a meta socket, so that's 2x12(15)sta VS 18sta. This makes a meta socket-less helmet a clear winner (if it has 3 sockets, that is).
PS: This is going to change in 2.4 however, with the new and highly interesting meta gem from the new faction.
