Two bosses enter... but only one will get to leave in WoW Insider's series of fantasy deathmatches. We've scoured the instances of Azeroth and Outland looking for the most interesting bosses Blizzard has to offer us and picked out a group of 32 to pit against one another until we come out with a single winner in the end. And the best part -- you get to tell us who wins.
We're down to the Final Four. First up, two bosses of Naxxramas face off. Will the undead frost wyrm
Sapphiron be able to take down his partner in crime, The Archlich of the Plaguelands
Kel'Thuzad? Want to learn more about these two bosses and voice your opinion on who would win in a fight? Keep reading
Sapphiron was once a living member of the Blue Dragonflight -- though those times are long past. In a fight with
Arthas, Sapphiron was transformed into a frost wyrm who thenceforth served the Scourge. In the game, he may be found in Naxxramas guarding Kel'Thuzad's inner sanctum. Sapphiron has a variety of hard-hitting frost spells and can also drain life from his targets. Further, he can take to the air during a fight to attack his targets from a safe distance.
In a combat, Sapphiron will use the following abilities:
- Cleave: A standard frontal cleave.
- Icebolt: A ranged frost attack that Sapphiron only uses from the air. It does frost damage to its primary target and stuns them for several seconds as well as splash damage to targets in the vicinity.
- Frost Breath: A very high damage frost AoE that Sapphiron casts from the air before landing.
- Frost Aura: An aura that does frost damage over time to anyone within range.
- Life Drain: A DoT that (surprise!) drains life from the target and heals Sapphiron. (And be warned -- it heals him for more than it hurts you.)
- Blizzard: A frost AoE that slows movement speed if you're caught in it.
And if the fight lasts longer than 15 minutes? Sapphiron will enrage, causing his Frost Aura to do 600% normal damage. Ouch.
The
Lich Lord Kel'Thuzad rules over the Plaguelands from his citadel Naxxramas. While in his floating fortress, the fight begins with the raid taking out several adds, we're just considering the bosses themselves, so we'll start by talking about what would normally be considered phase 2 of this encounter, when you first get to fight Kel'thuzad himself.
Kel'Thuzad does frost and shadow damage with:
- single-target and multi-target frostbolts,
- the ability to mind-control up to 4 targets,
- the ability to create a shadow fissure, causing massive shadow damage to anyone in its radius,
- a frost blast that immobilizes and damages its target (100% of its health),
- a mana detonation which causes causes mana users to explode, dealing damage to all of those around them.
Now, before we get to our vote, I want to be clear that we're considering these two bosses to have similar health, level, and damage capacity. We're trying to put them on an even playing field. But bearing that in mind, tell us who you think would come out ahead if these two bosses met -- and why.

kel, clearly

In his current state, Kel'Thuzad is far more intelligent and possesses more non-frost damage. I don't know who would have won when Sapphiron was alive, but dead, he's no match for the guy whose door he's guarding.

Sapphiron is immune to frost spells, making him the only possible winner.
Feoremar Mar 23rd 2008 3:30PM
As cool as Sapphiron is, Kel'Thuzad is unfortunately cooler.

Here is how the fight will go:
Since both are heavy on the frost resistance, frost spells will be mostly unless in this battle. When Kel'Thuzad uses shadow fissure, Sapphiron will just take to the air and fly over it. Sapp will keep dotting Kel with life drain while Kel will keep exploding Sapp's mana. Though the race to death will be fairly close, Kel will use his calculating mind to keep the edge over a formidable opponent called Sapphiron.

Life Drain = Win for Sapphiron imo.
kallisti117 Mar 23rd 2008 4:49PM
My money's on Sapphiron, simply on the fact that he has more options in which to deal out the damage. Kel'Thuzad is pretty much limited to Mana Explosion, whilst Sapphiron can easily do hit-and-runs with both Cleave and Life Drain.

Strangely how most of the ppl just "look at the pictures" and decide who's a winner.Kel is cooler and by that logic he wins.
But otherwise, think Saph pretty much has this one.
Flying over shadow fissure, and spamming that drain life while immune to frostbolts...bye bye Lich.
Thinking Mouse Mar 23rd 2008 5:16PM
I would have to put my money on Sapphiron. Again, as above, both are heavily frost resistant. Sapphiron's life drain will keep him him regening even while Kel'Thuzad dies, restoring the health lost from the Mana Explosion. Flying would by far and a way be the best way to avoid being anywhere near the shadow fissures, and then swooping down for a good bit of bashing and cleaving would leave the undead dragon the winner. Despite Kel'Thuzad looking immensely more evil.

As others have noted, Sapphiron can easily fly above much of KT's damage. Life drain, while doing the float like a butterfly sting like a bee thing puts Sapphiron on top easily, though the fight would probably be quite long. This is assuming of course that Sapphiron is immune to mind control, as most bosses are.
Sapphiron wins after about 17 or 18 minutes, by slowly meleeing down KT and doing a lot of flying and Life Drains until he enrages. At that point KT still has a good amount of health, but starts to drop really fast.
Snailking Mar 23rd 2008 6:18PM
Sapphiron would win, but people just vote for the "last boss".
Ashwin Mar 23rd 2008 6:29PM
Only humanoids can be MC'ed can't they? If Sapph can be MC'ed then KT can MC him into a shadow fissure.
Judging by the rules so far KT's insta kill can't be used(ofc sapph is frost resistant anyway).
Their frost attacks are mostly useless against each other.
I take it that Sapph being undead can't be MC'ed so he could just avoid the fissures by flying. KT would use mana detonation on Sapph and Sap would use life drain and fly over the fissures to avoid them.
It would be a stalemate till 15 minutes when Sapph enrages and then gg Kel'thuzad.

This is likely to be the last good match of this series. The other two bosses, "Can't kill me unless you're swallowed" C'thun, and "LOL my 60% damage shear is legal" Illidan, will remove intelligent discussion from the final two battles.
Now, on to this week's match. Kel is certainly cooler, and there is a reason that Sapph is stuck on guard duty. However, in much the same way that Kel was able to beat Archimonde's lore advantage, Sapph turns the tables on the master of Naxx.
They will each batter the other mercilessly, but Sapph's life drain will allow him to keep an HP advantage.
Ian Mar 23rd 2008 7:40PM
Considering Kel'Thuzad just has to float down a hallway to engage Sapphiron, I think he should get all of his adds (and take this one easily).
Ian Mar 23rd 2008 8:29PM
Also if you've ever done the Kel'Thuzad encounter you'd know Shadow Fissure would hit Sapphiron in the air, and Sapphiron has a 60 second cooldown on his flight anyway, Kel'Thuzad casts Shadow Fissure almost constantly.
Remina Mar 23rd 2008 11:44PM
I think it's safe to say that most of the people commenting on these "fights" have never set foot in Naxx, let alone seen the final two bosses.
Green Armadillo Mar 24th 2008 12:00AM
In fairness, I haven't done Kel'Thuzad (indeed, not many have), but unless the strats I've read fail to mention that he can cast Gravity Lapse, I'm unclear on how you can be sure that Shadow Fissure would damage an airborne target. :P
The point about Sapphiron's limited flight is a good one though. It's been a long time since War 3, but I'm pretty sure he can stay in the air indefinitely. Either the air currents in his room are somehow not conducive to extended flight (usually these things take place on "neutral ground" but given that they both live next door to each other one supposes that neither objects to Frostwyrm Lair) or he's simply not smart enough in his mindless undead state to think of staying in the air and drain life kiting. (I believe the latter, which is why I vote for Kel Thuzad to get his tail kicked by Illidan in two weeks after C'Thun's stomach gets split in half by Warglaives.)
sweetness Mar 23rd 2008 10:18PM
right now kel'thuzad has 666 votes. He can not be stopped.
Ian Mar 23rd 2008 10:20PM
Also as an aside, I don't much care for that particular picture of Kel'Thuzad.
Looks much more evil here

Nice pic, Ian. The classic, facial close up, however, probably won him his narrow win over Archi!
