The evolution of World PvP rewards
Relmstein has a good post up about how Blizzard's world PvP has evolved over time, and what we might expect from Lake Wintergrasp, the PvP zone in Wrath of the Lich King. When world PvP began, it was very much an ad-hoc environment, which lead to a lot of 1v1 battles that eventually escalated when wandering guildies or alts showed up. As Relmstein says, the large majority of battles started with that stealthing noise (that used to inspire chills in the spines of those on PvP servers), and ended with an all-out brawl with no rewards but to get the other guys back.Nowadays, world PvP is much more organized, in the sense that there are specific objectives and goals to go after. The original reward was a zonewide buff (in Silithus and the Plaguelands), but Blizzard eventually morphed this into something more permanent -- in Auchindoin, you fight for a buff that earns you tokens for rewards, and in Halaa, you fight to get the rewards themselves.
Which leads Relmstein to suspect that Wintergrasp will have direct rewards of its own, almost equal to the gear you get from endgame dungeons and Arena PvP. He predicts that it will be token-based (not a bad idea, considering all the badge changes Blizzard has put in lately -- in fact, Blizzard might even cut a corner and have Wintergrasp reward players with WotLK's version of badges directly), and that it will be updated with each Arena season, to keep players fighting there. All good ideas -- Blizzard has definitely innovated (successfully or otherwise) in the area of World PvP rewards, and we'll look forward to Wrath to see what they come up with there.

I see a major failing in some of the recent world PvP.
Take Auchindoin. Yes, the buff is nice, and you pick up these Spirit Shard things ... but the shards are not explained. The text on the mouse-over doesn't say "turn these in at ____". You don't get a quest from someone to collect some shards to get you going on collecting them for loot. You're just somehow expected to know what they're for.
At least the Hellfire Tokens are explained in quest form, even if they become out of date by the time you're moving out of HFP.

I could totally get into this I think. Just let me know where I can rent a meat-wagon and I'll go to work.
You require MOAR vespene gas!

World PVP is, by and large, an incredible failure on all levels.
For the simple reason that on realms with unbalanced populations (ALL OF THEM), one faction tends to dominate.
I'm not just QQing about this. I play alliance on an alliance-dominated server. We almost always hold all of the world pvp targets 99% of the time.
BUT IT IS BORING. World PVP? Nonexistent. If you want world pvp rewards, you have to wait endlessly for a hordie with enough guts and death-wish to bother to TAKE a target before you can fight to get it back. Even then it's like a sledgehammer hitting an anthill. The horde are crushed in 5.2 seconds and it's back to alliance domination.
REALM POPULATION IMBALANCE DESTROYS WORLD PVP.

true but on my server horde dominate all the time, so you are right world pvp don't work

mm, yes, a system where your entire raid can loot badges from an enemy corpse (Or multiple badges from a destroyed building), and then turn those in for weapons and armor (Probably 1000 - 2000~)) would cause extreme havoc.
People ditching the BGs in favor of world-PvP, combined with the non-cross-server in it would cause 20v20 - 40v40 matches depending on server-size. Rewards would probably not be the same as Honor or Arena awards though.
If we presume Honor are the little-bother of Arena Points, where would Wintergrasp be placed?
Either way, I predict havoc :)

I would absolutely love it if LWG rewards were on par with arena.
I'm kind of sick of arena getting the top dog rewards for pvp. I'm not saying it doesn't take skill or strategy, I just don't find the gameplay compelling in the slightest.
They'd need to keep the rewards more limited though, maybe a baseline set to those who complete a minimum grinding requirement and maybe a 2-5% more powerful set for the top 10 players on each faction..

If they don't want world PvP to die, they need to create a way for it to be easy to get to the zone from the main city. I would help with world PvP more if it didn't mean I needed to waste 5 minutes flying each way.
Also, I probably wont world PvP much in the early days of WotLK, mainly because the horde to alli. population on my server is about 1:3.

I bet they cut out battleground specific rewards and remove the middle man in the token system all together and just give out Badges of Justice. It would certainly make sense with the higher costs we're seeing for such items in 2.4.
I suppose there could be a new vendor who takes both Badges and has a Winterspring rep requirement.

I hope they are careful on how you get a token for these "leet" rewards.
I saw one server that had a planned out time for both sides. One group of 40 would kill kill kill. After they got their tokens..... the other group took over.
Took no more than 30 minutes to an hour to get over a 100 tokens for everyone.
This could be exploited so easily, and they are talking about making real quality lewts??? lawl.

" almost equal to the gear you get from endgame dungeons and Arena PvP."
This exists. It's the battlegrounds. Do we really want Blizzard trying to balance a fifth (BG, arena, instance, raid) way to get gear? Existing world PvP gives access to a few specific items and zone buffs. Good enough. Massively retrofitting the game...again...
Want to world PvP? Go do it for fun. Want world PvP rewards? Go play a game designed for it.

I'm so tired of hearing of WoW's PvP. Its a failure, and it will continue to be even after WotLK releases, is patched, and patched again. It's like someone decided to take an RPG and then throw a copy of Team Fortress into the middle of it as an afterthought and expected it to work. It's nothing more than a half thought out idea at best and every twitch of the rules/concepts take the originally great concept one step closer to a complete pile of crap.
Don't get me wrong I have loved WoW long before its release in '04, but more and more this crusade to balance PvP and create more of it is taking away from the overall game.
In regards to World PVP, as pointed out by those above me, faction/population imbalances are definitely an issue. Easily resolved by instanced zones/areas/mini-zones with population caps. I doubt it will ever happen though.
The best thing (imo) Mythic ever did with DAoC was its RvR system. No matter how big you were, how many guildies you had, or how unbalanced it might be, you never knew when you'd get rolled over by a bigger group(s) in the BGs either through alliances or an emoted truce between opposite factions to fall the third.
Perhaps in the end thats the root issue for world pvp for WoW. One side will always (well most likely) be bigger than the other, there's just not that element of uncertainty that keeps you heart pounding searching the horizons for the next attack. Add all the siege engines, battlegrounds, and world PvP you want, in the end one side or the other will dominate, people will get bored or frustrated with it and we'll be back were we are now - wishing we had something more.

It's a polearm in northrend, I wonder what the stats are. I couldn't find another place to let people know about my findings, so I though wow insider would be best :).

Nvm, it's for summerfest :P although it was titled northrend 0.0

I don't care what the rewards are, I just want MOAR world PvP. If that means eliminating the battlegrounds, so be it.
