Tips for the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza
I can't say that I've ever seriously tried to do the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza -- I've seen it happen a few times, and I love the idea, but I've never committed to fishing long enough to be competitive in it. But I'm reconsidering that after reading these extremely fun tips from Resto4Life. Some of them are Druid specific (I bet the Shaman waterwalking spell would come in handy when trying to cross over to islands and through streams), and some of them are just silly, but it's just the right kind of thing to get you in the mindset to do a little Sunday angling. The two sources Resto pulled from have more: Tree of Life has a few helpful tips, while The Game Dame goes in-depth in laying out exactly how to win the event. And it's a good thing we've got these, too -- as of patch 2.4, as the anglers among you have already heard, there'll be a few new fishing daily quests, and some brand new rewards (the fishing hat is now blue) from both the quests and the Extravaganza.
I still don't know if I have the interest to sit there, rod in hand, waiting for a fish to bite, but there's no doubt that this is a fun little, often missed part of the game. Very nice to have something fun like this going on weekly on the servers.

I love fishing. I make great money because lvl 70's decide to skip fishing and cooking and then, WOOPS??? Dang, you need buff foods for raiding, and I can't get my cooking high enough.
And with all the time you spend just standing around hopping around like an idjit while waiting for a BG queue can easily net you a couple casts into the canals in Stormwind. Thats how I leveled my fishing. Catch two or three fish while in queue, or sit and cast while I'm chit chatting with guildies, but am not really doing anything of note.
Great thing about WOW is there is always something to do... even when there isn't anything to do.

I just experienced the STV fishing extravaganza for the first time this past Sunday. Although, my intent was not to win the event but rather to act as bodyguard to my friend and scout out schools for him to fish. Even though we didn't win (he d/c'd with 35 tastyfish), I thought it was a lot of fun. I even caught a rare fish after the winner was declared.

I just won for the first time about a month ago, been doing the contest on and off pretty much since launch. Here's what I've learned:
- Fish the western coast from Grom Gol north to the inlet and back again. There are level 30-ish crocks there that discourage lvl 19 twinks from hitting that area meaning less competition for the schools.
- turn on auto-loot in preferences. Hotkey your casting icon. speed counts.
- set hearthstone to the booty bay inn at least an hour before the contest starts
- go against the crowd. Are people passing you headed south? go north -- the schools they just fished out will respawn shortly
- always be looking for your next school. scan the coastline behind you as you run. the schools respawn so quickly sometimes you can run away from one behind you, so always be scanning.
- put a runspeed enchant on your boots! Get a riding crop or other speed gear for your mount.
- in 2.4 tasty fish schools will be trackable, so get your weather beaten journal now! Or get friends to scan the coastline for your next school.
Beyond that it's just plain luck regarding how many "junk" catches you pull from pools, how many schools spawn close to you, and how many people are competing on a given sunday.
Good luck all!

Druids should also try to get four pieces of the Gladiator gear set if they're level 70. The runspeed bonus from the set stacks with the runspeed bonus boot enchant, making cheetah form almost as fast as a level 40 mount. It's very useful when jumping to nearby pools. For longer hauls, mount up.
I won once, and got the rod, I'm pretty happy. I've got the boot as well, and would like to get the fishing line. I'll try to get the hat from the new daily quest to max out my fishing at 500.

Also, I believe in 2.4 the special fish will no longer have a popup confirmation box, so don't be afraid to start a new cast immediately.
If 2.4 doesn't come out tomorrow, however, be careful when casting this weekend, as the special fish will still require you to confirm looting them. If you start a new cast before confirming, you lose the fish.

here's a tip when fishing or mining or picking up herbs or even a chest, shift right click on ur fishing thing and it loots automatically
BillDoor Mar 24th 2008 7:46PM
You can also just enabled auto-loot in the Options menu.

@ #8.
Since Im a miner on a PvE server and have had issues with idiots trying to mine the same node i'm on, I usually have auto loot off. Some people may have similar issues and not have auto loot on.
I just have to remember to turn it on when fishing. Inconvenient but unfortunately necessary.
