Addon Spotlight: Ace in the Hole? (Updated)
Welcome to the reality that is 2.4 addon pandemonium! It is a time of great sorrow, confusion and frustration. With the new patch, we've seen even the most crucial addon go up in flames. A large percentage of you count Ace addons on your list of must-haves, so you may be wondering why the Ace sites are slow or unresponsive since the patch.I've been checking in on the Ace sites to see what I can find and have been regularly running my AceUpdater for Mac to keep myself current. Here is the current verdict (as of 1:45pm EST)
- WoW Ace Wiki: unresponsive
- WoW Ace Files: page loads but addons are up and down
- WoW Ace Updater page: unresponsive
- Ace Updater: Works sporadically, but normally showing no installed or available addons
For now, you could check out the WoW Interface 2.4 Survival Guide, which can provide alternate links to some of your Ace addons, and others, that may be a closer incarnation fo the 2.4 version of a given addon.
Until then, you could always Go Commando!
Looks like Curse and WoW UI are down. You can try the ultra-low bandwidth version of Wow Interface, which appears to be up and running still.

I think the word you are looking for is sporadically

All the addon sites are up and down.
I have to wondering what kind of profits from advertising those sites turn for the days following a patch...

Threat Meter is dead! :(

The Wowinterface website is down. So is curse. I think at least 5 million gamers are trying to update Gatherer at the same time. Lunch time.

I decided to go commando last night when trying to go thru MT and suffered from low FPS and lag... it blew my mind on how much I actually depend on the info and controls of my precious addons.

I had Omen yesterday (via the WOWAce updater) it worked find for everyone in my party!
Although a few of them could use a Dummies Guild to Omen!

Omen was working fine, but the new interface is less than desirable. Its too big, doesn't hide itself as well as it used to and isn't auto collapsing. Granted, it may have been fixed since I last updated it at 9pm Pacific last night, but sure it was annoying.

Curse.com came up for 30seconds... yep okay I'm bored!
Kinda of curious how your FPS got lower without addons. Usually mines higher when everything is disabled.
There was generally on our server a lot of lag last night. So many people logging on to. Glad we have a low pop so there wasn't any wait time.

We could always raid without mods! Extreme Raiding.
Dakira Mar 26th 2008 2:12PM
I couldn't even begin to imagine healing in the raw!!

Lots and lots of preparation... back in the MC/BWL days my guild (back then) actually frowned on the use of add-ons, considering them a disingenuous facade for cheating/exploiting. While this was almost impossible to enforce, it was nevertheless a blanket expectation of the raid/class leaders that each and every person commit considerable time planning and preparing themselves (both from a item/grinding standpoint as well as tactics) for the upcoming raids. Healing rotations, tanking assignments, dps placement, and communication protocols (through the use of macros) were usually set in stone weeks before we ever even attempted content.
It took a rediculously long time to get into new content, but relatively little time to overcome it despite the lack of all the flashy/helpful addons. Would I go back to that environment if I had the choice? Hell no. But I have to admit that addons merely act as a time/skill buffer which allows people to overcome challenges faster and/or easier than they might otherwise have done without them.

I managed to squeeze onto Curse last night to get a few of my favorite addons. However, WoW kept crashing...I heard from others that people were complaining that their UI mods were crashing the game too. I guess I'll be turning most of my mods off until this settles down. Except Bartender...that and Omen are the one's I can't do without.
I don't know what you mean about Omen being up in flames. Could you explain?

In our Hyjal raid last night, some people were getting really lagged, and apparently it was Omen that was causing it. Something about too much data being shred between each other improperly. I'm not sure because mine looked like it was working fine. But it wasn't working properly, because I pulled Anatheron onto me (dpsing) despite being well below our MT's threat according to Omen.

I didn't even bother updating any of my addons. I thought I'd get page after page of errors once I logged on but I was surprised (and relieved) when there weren't any. I'm one lucky cat.
Tekkub Mar 26th 2008 3:34PM
Yup, yet again the filthy masses blindly updating every single addon they own have brought the sites down. I repeat the same thing every patch and nobody listens... ONLY UPDATE THE ADDONS YOU HAVE THAT _BREAK_ ON PATCH DAY.
I had two things break, and I've already updated them. That's 2 out of 216 addons and libraries...

well TBH wowace survived until I congratulated Kael on 3 consecutive patches without going down...
then Europe woke up and destroyed WAU
:P yes my voodoo is strong

Time to refresh your attitude on technology. It's there for us. It is meant to be used. And there are many people in the world that earn a paycheck making sure that when it gets used, it doesn't fail.
We are not at fault for "breaking teh internets". This is what breeds bigger and better technology. You should encourage the behavior rather than accept the current state of affairs. :)
Use the machines to death! They will be rebuilt.. bigger.. stronger. Faster.
Tekkub Mar 26th 2008 3:59PM
Except that, broken addon fixes aside, the rest of that bandwidth is spent because the author simply changed a single number in the addon's TOC file? That's bigger stranger faster...
I'm not saying never update, I'm saying, on patch day, update the addons that BREAK. Wait till, say, the end of the week for those other non-essential updates.
I for one simply do not push out patchday updates to my addons unless they break. You'll see the updates for my addons this weekend... unless you bother to take the time to track down my git repo to grab an alpha build.

I have over 200 Ace based Addons. All of them working.
Omen gives an error on login, but then works. I gave the latest version thanks to using JWoWUpdater (a java based updater I use on both my Mac and PC).

All over 200+ of my AddOns are working. I use the java based updater JWoWUpdater, which runs on both my Mac and PC.
Omen gives an error on login, but then proceeds to work anyway. As of last night at least, when I first added the new Omen, with its new GUI, I had to 'resize' the window using a Mac style pull-tab that shows on the bottom-right of it before Omen 'snapped together' and made visual sense.
