This is the companion quest to "
Blood for Blood," and is given by Magistrix Seyla up at the Throne of Kil'Jaeden ("
The Missing Magistrix" is a prerequisite). In "
Blast the Gateway" you take on a mission to help shut down the Legion Gateway, by means of an interesting quest mechanic.
- Right-click the supplied Sizzling Embers to release a pet Living Flare, which follows you around. Contrary to what WoWWiki says, I find that it will not despawn if you use your flying mount, as long as you don't get too far away from it (so be careful on your epic mounts).
- Find and kill the Incandescent Fel Sparks, which are fire elementals that wander the Throne area. They have a fireball, but like most of the mobs involved in the dailies, they're not hard to kill. Every a Fel Spark is killed with your Living Flare nearby, the Flare energizes. Note that you don't actually have to kill the Spark yourself; if you see some other people killing one, go help, and any flares in the vicinity will get energized.
- Once your Flare accumulates enough energy (it takes
about five eight kills), it will become "unstable" and turn green. Take it over to the Legion Gateway, near Magistrix Seyla, and it'll release its fiery power. Done! Talk to the Magistrix for 12g and 250 Shattered Sun rep.
I did have my Flare despawn on me once, but I think I flew up very high or something. I've definitely had it follow me on my flying mount just fine. But you should be careful, because if it does despawn you have to start the quest over.

Do we gotta fly from Hellfire to get there on the second day or what?
Eliah Hecht Mar 26th 2008 6:43PM
Yep, as far as I know. There was, however, a blue post earlier today hinting that later phases will bring additional portals to the Throne of KJ.

@Eliah (#2), I don't remember there being any shortcut to the Throne area on the PTR's. Once we hit phase 2 there's a portal from Shattrath to Quel'Danis and a repeatable quest in Quel'Danis for a scroll that ports you to Shattrath, so those might help ease the travel pain a little.

This quest took me so long to finish due to the massive amount of the other faction that is doing it at the same time. I found that the best way to finish it was to just fly around and basically leach off other peoples kills.

You need 8 kills to fully charge your spark.

Thanks!

Actually it takes 8 kills. If you click on your flare you will see it has a stacking buff, at 8 stacks it turns into an unstable flare.

Does anyone know what happens if you don't hand in "The Missing Magistrix" quest? Would you then be able to abandon and retake the quest for fast transportation? Unfortunately I can't try this for myself.

If you don't turn in "The Missing Magistrix," you can't get "Blast the Gateway" or "Blood for Blood." Will update posts.

This was bugged yesterday, such that you could get the dailies without turning in the prereq, but they promptly hotfixed it. :(

Activate the flare, hope on your flying mount and then fly near the elementals as they are being killed. Far below, you'll see your flare on the ground. When the elemental dies, you get credit. This is by far the easiest and most efficient way to do this quest. In fact, if you watch the entire area, you'll see a whole procession of characters with big glowing flares heading in the direction of dying elementals too.

Just make sure you don't die...if you do, the flare restarts at the initial size. I had 7 kills and found this out the hard way

I don't mind the travel to Hellfire to do the quests. Blizzard has always said that they want people to have to do a little traveling around for things. It gives it a bit more realism to the process of game play. If every town had and popular hangout had a portal, then there would be no point in the air taxi's.
If you don't think the reward is good enough for a trip to Hellfire, then don't take the five minutes it takes to fly there. It isn't as if you are porting to Darnasses and then having to grab a bird to Gadgetstan. And with an eventual 25 available daily's you will definitly have your choice of what is the easiest way to make a buck, because if you are like me, there is NO way you can pull off that many.
So it's all good. No need for portals everywhere.
