Phase 1 Dailies: Gaining the Advantage

You've dealt with automata and the Wretched on the Isle of Quel'Danas. You've slain demons and blown up the transporter at the Throne of Kil'Jaeden. Are there more Shattered Sun-related dailies left to do? You bet! There are three quests that are assigned in Shattrath, and here's one of them: Gaining the Advantage. Posts on the other two are coming shortly.Allegedly, some people in Stormwind can make oils that will help in the fight against the Legion, and they need Nether Residue to do it. This quest is assigned by Emisarry Mordin who paths near the flight master.
For this quest, all you need to do is be a skinner, herbalist and/or miner, and go out and do some gathering. Any Outlands herb (not Golden Sansam or Dreamfoil), ore node, or (I assume) skinnable mob has a chance to drop Nether Residue, of which you need eight for the quest. The drop rate on herbs felt like around 30%, possibly higher on higher-level herbs.
So it's a fairly easy quest to do, and as a bonus, you get some herbs/ore/leather. Go on back to Shattrath to turn it in, and be rewarded with 16g, 250 Shattered Sun rep, and

weird I only got 1 Major Rejuvenation Potions for the quest :s

The residue has not dropped for me from skinning the flayers inside the mines for the netherwing dailies. It has however dropped from the mobs I kill while farming fel glands.

I've had the same thing happen to me, which is a bit disappointing. But the drop rate was very reasonable on other mobs.

It seams that way for ore too. I went to do this with the Netherwing daily, killed two birds with one stone, but it seamed only to drop from normal ore, not the nether ore. Luckily there is lots of normal ore on the ledge too.

I have horrible luck with the drops. I herbed my way to Netherstorm for the attack plans and herbed my way back without a single residue. I had full stacks of Ragveil, Felweed and Netherbloom when I got back.
30% is probably right, if you're not me.

I had an absolutely horrible drop rate too. It took at least 20 herb harvests to get my first one. I got my 2nd one a while later when I was in HFP at the Throne and there were some Nightmare Vines around.

Drop rate for skinning is really good, probably like 1 in 5 or 6. Goes really quick with my geared Hunter. I'm one of the few (it seems) who dislikes doing daily quests, but this is definitely added to my short list.

The drop rate on the ores seemed to also be about 30%. The nethercite (sp) ore never dropped any residue for me after mining 40 ores for the Netherwing rep quest.

And of course us Tailor/enchanters get left out. /sigh. I wonder if I can get my Skinner friend to skin the mob, leave the leather and such on it and I can get the residue as well? Gonna have to test that tonight I think.

Apparently there aren't enough of us (or we aren't bitching loudly enough) to be heard. I thought they would've learned from the Netherwing grind, but apparently not. I guess this is Blizz's way of saying you're SUPPOSED to have a gathering profession. Otherwise , "too bad, so sad".

Something to mention, on the PTR people were noticing that these items do not seem to drop on Netherwing. So I would suggest doing the skinning, herbing, and mining somewhere else. Though, it's possible that in the live version it's different.

30% seems pretty high based on my experience. Ive done this quest 2 and 1/2 times now ( servers went down grrr ) and its been grueling. The rest of the dailies seem overly easy compared to this one. Not that this is hard its just REALLY time consuming.
On my first attempt at this, I herbed for over an hour at 6/8 before getting the 7th and then another half hour before getting the eigth. At the end of this quest I had three full stacks of nightmare vine, 2 full stacks of dreaming glory, one full stack of netherbloom and three stacks of feldweed...thats ALOT of herbing.
The nice thing about it was I was able to sell ALL of it on the AH. I made a fortune!
This reminds me of the Nethwing quest for those crystals. I only turned it in when I had enough crystals ( 40 ) every couple of days rather than bothering with trying to get 40 everyday.

Can any herbalists confirm whether they got any Nether Residue from the mobs in Zang? I killed stuff in Quagg Ridge for five minutes and did NOT get any, but maybe someone can confirm?
Agree with other posters, the drop rate is low, and this quest is time-consuming. You just have to pick it up first thing in the morning, and gradually collect the residues during the day. It took me over two hours on Tueday to do it, and have not completed it a second time yet. It's probably the only daily I will not do regularly.

Herbalists get shafted on this. I spent almost 6 hrs farming herbs (it was my herb farming day!) from all over Outlands and got only 3. I filled my cenarrion herb bag up twice, plus the handful of herbs that overflowed into my other bags. My estimate for the drop rate is like .03% drop. Yeah, its that low. They need to hotfix this daily and make it guaranteed drop on every outland herb.

Huh... it only took me maybe 20-30 minutes of herbing to complete the quest. I have an epic flyer though.
